What Kickstarters have you backed, and how are they doing in your opinion?

Given the most recent news about Broken Age/Double Fine Adventure and the backlash that followed, I thought it would be interesting to see what people thought of how the games they've funded are shaping up in general. Here's mine:

capture7ksww.jpg

Satellite Reign - Just started, the game seems like it should be on track to making it. The recently posted developer video did a lot to ease my mind about the project. The guys working on it having a good track record makes it an easy bet. Hope it makes it.

Shovel Knight - Really enjoyed most of the games they've worked on in the past, and with capcom shitting the bed on Mega Man in the past few years even something as simple as a quality game in the same vein sounds like a load of fun. The guys seem to have a concrete vision and direction for the game, too. Easy decision to back. Since funding was completed all the updates seem to point in the direction that they're on the right track. Glad I backed it, and I hope it turns out well!

Torment 2 and WL2 - I figured I would combine these since most of what I have to say about one of them ties back into the other. I posted this in the DFA topic:

Yep, and this is exactly why I felt very safe throwing money at Brain Fargo (who's been successfully producing games for over 20 years) for both WL2 and Torment 2 vs DF. Maybe I'm wrong, but with Fargo it's always felt like he's had a very structured and deliberate plan to getting these games out, whereas with both DF games (especially the first one) felt like they got lost in the success and didn't know what to do with it.

And I feel enough can't be said with respect to how well managed and thought through both ineXile's KS have been. Both of them seemed to have a very clear creative direction, had no problem properly articulating what we were going to see from them, and had very well implemented stretch goals that never felt arbitrary. Since funding was completed, my hype actually increased tenfold for WL2 after both the vision document and the alpha footage was released for the game. WL2 seems to be on the track to releasing on time, and feature complete. Given this, I had no qualms about backing Torment 2.

Project eternity - While I was a little skeptical upon the launch of the project (buy our game, it's obsidian's next project and you love obsidian, right?), the follow up posts after funding was completed did a lot to strengthen my resolve to back the project for a frankly embarrassing amount of cash. Love the art direction they are taking, the gameplay design seems great, and since funding completed the game seems to be on schedule. Glad I backed it.

Volgarr - One of the better of the earlier KS projects in terms of showing us what to expect I thought. Came out with a really great looking demo that really sold me on the game. Previous track record on great titles like Shinobi 3D and Spyro GBA helped make this one an easy backing. Since funding was completed I haven't heard much from the developers, but they did follow up on their promise to release dev builds as the project went on, and I've enjoyed all of them that I've been bothered to DL. Last I heard it got delayed into later this year, and I've not heard anything since. Hope the project is okay.

Dead State - At the time I felt this was a no brainer to back. Gameplay looked solid, track record was solid, idea was great, etc. Since funding however I've barely heard a thing about it, and have no idea where it's currently standing. This might be because they locked certain developer updates behind a backer paywall, but I feel that's on them more than me, tbqh. I hope it's turning out well, because I really loved the general idea.

-----

Shaker - Kinda sad to see this fail, although I fully realize why it did and honestly find it hard to fault people for not getting on board. The developers had an amazing track record, but fell into some pitfalls when launching the KS. They attempted the Obsidian route of trying to get backed on rep alone, but failed to realize that both having worked on games (and more importantly, IPs) much less well known than Obsidian did really put them in a bad spot. Even though it's easy to argue that Tom Hall's work and Brenda B's work on Wizardry games give Obsidian's back catalog a run for its money, most people just haven't played those games (sadly), and thus trying to gain funding based on those titles was faulty from the outset. This isn't even getting into the problems with showing John "About to make you his Bitch" Romero in the initial pitch video was very problematic. Even though I think the guy is fantastically talented in game design, his reputation post Daikatana is effectively poison, and he himself has done little to alleviate the perception that the project was a failure entirely because of his overambition and inability to manage projects. Once they revamped the project and started showing stuff I really got on board with the project, but you can only make one first impression...and they blew it =\

Whew, that took more effort than I thought, lol. What about you, gaf? Have the projects you backed been going well?

Shadowrun seems to be doing and comes out this month.

Production still seems to be continuing on Grim Dawn also.

Double Fine Adventure - lost interest in it about 2 months after the KS ended. Now it's gone to shit apparently.

Starlight Inception - seems to be doing pretty well. They showed a gameplay trailer a couple of months ago and still seems to be on target for its original release date. Looks good fun - i'm excited.

Star Citizen. It's the only one I will ever back since it has a realistic budget for what its trying to do.

I backed wasteland 2, project eternity and torment.

I am not really up to date on their progress as I treat them as a kind of "fire and forget" affair. Don't get me wrong, I want them to succeed but I don't want to set myself up for to much disappointment if they should fail.

I finally funded my first Kickstarter last week with Amikrog. Prior to that there hadn't really been a Kickstarter I was interested in enough to fund. But those guys were really down to the wire with a Wii U version, and I thought it was really cool that Nintendo reached out to them. I hadn't played any of the teams' other games, but I'm fond of some of the cartoons/TV Shows/Films some of the people on that project had worked on.

Project Eternity is coming in pre-prod. Vertical slice on the way so that will be it's first true trial.

Star Citizen is looking stellar. The Art assets and vehicles are looking great, as well as the in flight physics. I think they have a long way though on creating the infrastructure and the actual game though.

Republique
Double FIne Adventure
Wasteland 2

As far as I know, all are doing fine. To be honest, I haven't kept too much track of any of them.

I backed Skullgirls. They got out most of the digital stuff (which has been pretty good) and have been keeping up with the updates so I'm happy.

Project Eternity is taking a.....long while.

It's going to be one of the biggest RPGs ever made in terms of scope (seriously, go look at what it's set to include), with hand-painted backdrops. That stuff doesn't come quickly.

It's tentatively scheduled for a Q2 2014 release but nobody should be surprised if it takes longer to finish up.

I wonder how the wasteland 2 is doing?

Pick a department and they’re making amazing progress. Most of our game systems are in and working. The team is currently busting ass to get the remainders in for a full feature lock. Meanwhile, the level designers are taking the time to craft each encounter and focusing on the reactive elements. Mark Morgan is about to get started on the next batch of music for us. Now that we’re starting to lock our script for the radio voice over from Vargas, we’re able to kick off the recordings next week. Radio plays a huge role in the game and adds a very interesting element to how you navigate the wasteland. That system is fully functioning and will continue to get deeper and deeper. The art team is taking additional passes on each map and adding bits of detail everywhere they can. We’ve also picked up some great team members to help us close out the last third of development. Things are moving fast here!

They've also released videos showing off some of the combat, dialogue systems, and inventory.

Double Fine Adventure
Seems to be coming along, although I admit I'm a bit concerned about the financial problems surrounding the development. Have to admit I'm glad that it is growing in scope.

Shadowrun Returns
Releasing soon, looks good so far. Have no expectations whatsoever.

Wasteland 2
I love the look of the game. High expectations for this.

Project Eternity
This'll take a while to come out...

SolForge
The progress so far has been pretty underwhelming since they only just released the deck building option. The interface still needs some work, but I'm excited to play some drafts when the game is finally officially released.

Project: Eternity - Very pleased so far, but I'll wait until they release some gameplay to make further judgment.

Wasteland 2 - I wish they'd update more frequently, but the Alpha gameplay video made me very confident that it won't suck.

Shovel Knight - Not really following this, it'll be a nice surprise when it eventually releases :P

Divinity: Original Sin - The kickstarter campaign was very well run and their pledge management system is pretty great. They haven't updated in a while but that's understandable since most of the studio is focused on finishing Dragon Commander.

Torment - Too early to tell, but it is in good hands.

Dead State - I hope this gets made, but I'm not very confident about that.

Angry Video Game Nerd Movie
Double Fine Game
Shadow Era physical card TCG

Only received my Shadow Era physical cards and AVGN signed poster. I have lost interest in the Double Fine game especially with that second Kickstarter they did. I most likely will never support a Kickstarter again due to the risk associated with it.

Only one. Life of Pixel. It failed to reach it's target, which was a shame. The game was doomed to die on PS Mobile and they wanted to bring it to more platforms.

Haven't backed any but I did buy FTL and if that game is indicative of the quality that Kickstarter will...kick start, then I may consider supporting in the future.

Never backed a Kickstarter, but I've purchased several Kickstarter projects after the fact: FTL, the Zeboyd games, etc.

Thanks for taking the risk so I can have good games, I guess!

I've backed
GSTD-logo.png

Which got released and I enjoyed :D

Is it just me or is this game pretty hard?

Nice thanks for the reply! I might have added their newsletters to my spam blocker by accident one day when clearing out junk mail. Which is why I dont see their stuff anymore but still get the shadowrun one and grim dawn. D:

Just did a few searches for vids and does look fantastic so far!

Project Eternity. I have complete faith in Obsidian, which is more than I can say for most studios doing kickstarter. Even with the proper creative head, I'm still skeptical of many studios' ability to deliver on their promises... looking at you Star Citizen (even though I'll be first in line if they pull all of it off). I like everything that I've seen/heard so far.

Just got my first backed game the other day: Larry Reloaded.
Hope all projects I have backed will come out eventually.

Castle Story & Starlight Inception.

Both have lots of updates but I dont keep up. Just basically used as a preorder system.

Double Fine Adventure / Broken Age: The documentary has more than justified my backing. And the game looks pretty awesome.

Shovel Knight: I have no idea what is going on with the development of this game. :lol

Only game I've funded is The Magical Realms of Tír na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 – Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie – Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa. Haven't been many updates regarding the game.Only other project I've backed is Retronauts which we just got the first episode on Monday.

Double Fine Adventure
Bit disappointed that it's coming really late after today's news. Won't be playing half the game so for me the release is April 2014 which is a long time away. It's unfortunate that they seemed to have mismanaged their budget and scope but if it turns out to be a good game all will be forgiven. The documentary has been a fascinating insight into game dev and people aren't kidding when they say that it alone is worth the money they paid.

Wasteland 2 and Project Eternity
Deliberately imposing radio silence on these projects. Opted out of receiving Kickstarter updates. Though from what I read on GAF from other backers, things seem to be going well.

Shadowrun Returns
They ran into budget problems as well. Made some choices which didn't go down well on GAF but I'm pretty okay with it. I don't expect any Kickstarter to deliver exactly 100% of what I imagine it will be. Looking forward to playing it later this month. Bit apprehensive on how much actual content it will have though, and whether they are relying too much on modders to flesh out the game. In general, folks are a lot less interested in modding now than they seemed to be 10 years ago so if it doesn't pick up for this game I don't know where we'll be left.

Dreamfall Chapters

They haven't really said much since the Kickstarter ended. In fact, they've only sent out one update with the survey and I seem to remember watching a video where they were moving into a new office to work. Really hope things are going smoothly with them.

Star Citizen
Pre-production work looks stunning. As of now the hangar module is expected in a couple of months and they haven't even shown off concept for all the ships so I guess that's what they'll be focusing on. I wish they could show some early gameplay. I've spent a lot on this one so I really, really do hope they don't fuck it up.

It's worth mentioning that Josh Sawyer being a project lead for P:E fills me with confidence, he was able to lead a team and make IWD2 in an absurdly short amount of time and he saved NWN 2 after Ferret Baudoin left Obsidian while the game was a mess.

I tend to back board games (my profile) more than video games. I like getting a physical product than a digital one. I have backed a few video game related things though.

Solforge $15
Ouya $10 (just to reserve my gamertag)

It's not on Kickstarter but I also gave $15 to Starbound.

Oculus Rift - They delivered the dev kits they promised (after some necessary delay) and are on their way to making a retail product with the millions in venture capital funding that they've received afterwards.

So it's a kickstarter success story, in other words.

Not to mention FNV turned out so well despite Bethesda dropping the ball in a number of ways. Mass respect for J. Sawyer, and oneday I hope I'm enough of a man to beat New Vegas with his balance mod enabled ~_~

Just video games? Because I could write up a storm on how happy board game Kickstarters have made me.

So just video games.

Super Retro Squad ($15) - The bums took the money to make more versions of Super Mario Crossover instead. Ugh.

Retro Game Crunch ($25) - "Six games in six months. Crazy? Yes. Possible? Totally!" LOL.

Tiny Barbarian DX ($8) - This just came out but I haven't had time to play it. I'll report back this weekend.

Shovel Knight ($15) - I'm still confident that this will be the one that knocks one out of the park.

Eternity has been strong with the updates as well. So much combat, character, setting, and general lore detail. It really shows how well they thought things through in pre-production.

They're also about done with the vertical slice, at the end of which the game will be feature-complete.

What is going on with Republique? Most of their updates have been private. Their game is supposed to be releasing this month.

I've backed Double Fine Adventure, Wasteland 2, Project Eternity, Torment, Skullgirls, and Kaiju Combat.

No real complaints about any of them, now that Kaiju Combat's legal troubles seem to be sorted and official updates have resumed. The crowd-funding model's not given me any cause for alarm so far.

.

While I made the topic with video games in mind I have no issue with you posting how the other projects you've backed have gone. The more the merrier :D

Wasteland 2, Dreamfall Chapters, Project Eternity and Torment 2.

All of them were handled very well as Kickstarters, and while Torment 2 and Dreamfall are early in development, they seem well on track (and the design of Torment 2 being done while the production of WL2 is being done is an excellent idea).

Wasteland 2 is looking excellent, and looks like it will be on schedule for its end of the year release. Project Eternity looks like it will be a long ride, probably mid 2014, but so far the game is looking terrific, and massive.

Star Citizen

Haven't been this amped for a game in a long time. Everything I've seen so far has just made me more excited about the game

I just found out today that There Came An Echo will be released in two parts. Fuck Feep.

Seriously, fuck that guy.

Shadowrun will be released in a couple weeks, which I expect will turn out at least decent. Two Brothers should be out end of August/early September. As far as I know Wasteland 2 is still on track for October. Republique still suppose to come out this year.

Homesick has been Greenlit, XING: The Land Beyond team just got an Oculus Rift and Project Eternity does tons of updates. Radio the Universe has infrequent updates but I'm not too worried yet.

So overall, pretty well. Oh, and I was kidding about Feep. <3
Super Retro Squad ($15) - The bums took the money to make more versions of Super Mario Crossover instead. Ugh.
So glad I skipped over that. Game seemed very uninspired.
