Should I stick with LCD or go Plasma?

What about that input lag tho

Never tested lag, but as far as contrast and even backlighting is concerned that F8000 sieres is no joke for an Edge lit LED. Super bright whites, deep blacks, and amazing ascetics. I was really close to buying one but instead went with the ZT60 because of the "reference TV" "better blacks than a Kuro" reviews.

IMO as far as edge lit LED's go nothing touches Samsung's flagship F8000

im just a little salty about samsung led's.

I've got this one:

Sucks for gaming and the PQ isn't all that great IMO. Paid $3,000 ish for it too :l. Got it because our new place had a lot of light coming in and I thought a LED/LCD would be best.

Lag is about 45ms. Which is not all that bad but if you are getting a LCD this year, there is just no way around the Sony TV's. They look good, are pretty accurate out of the box and have the lowest input lag ever recorded on a modern TV set.

So I sent an email to Amazon about the late delivery. Get an email back with an unexpected 10% refund of the TV price. Kinda shocked about that one really. A+ service Amazon.

That's across all Sony sets? I thought that was just one particular model?

So, I went out and bought me a Sony KDL55W905A today, to replace a Samsung UE46D8000.

Bought it based on this review from www.hdtvtest.co.uk. I have tried some fast paced games now, and boy, can I feel the difference in input lag from my old set. I can only echo what Lima has been saying, this is a brilliant TV for gaming. Really feel like I'm ready for next gen consoles! Also, it feels great to finally have a TV that tops the list of the TV Input Lag Test Database over at hdtvtest.co.uk :D

Looks great too, although it has some drawbacks, mainly not as bright on max backlight on the Samsung, and bad viewing angles. Every review I've read mentions the viewing angles being horrible, so I was basically positively surprised by them being perfectly acceptable to me, and absolutely no problem in my living room setup.

The set also includes a code to redeem for a Sony Xperia Z as well, which I'm pretty happy about. Will wait to redeem that until I'm certain I'm keeping the tv though.

Smokey, is that the D8000? If so, I feel your pain.

I envy the budgets you guys have. Just got a 50'' Panasonic S60 and am absolutely loving it. Only complaints I have are that I wish there were more inputs (soon to be remedied by a Yamaha receiver) and there is a bit of a glare in the daytime. The picture quality has me impressed though, and there's next to no lag as far as I can tell. Best $700 I've spent in a long time.

How are the new 60 Panasonic plasmas in comparison to last year models? I've got the 50UT50 (excellent black levels, as it replaced a 42PZ85 from 2008, with good black levels for its time) and was wondering if there was a big jump for ST60 models.

Also, I just bought a BenQ W1070 projector and a 110" screen (i watch a lot of movies) and, although black level doesnt compare to the plasma, the feeling of a bigger screen size in a completely black room more than compensates it to the point the panny seems small now and its my preferred display. :D

Thinking about buying this over the weekend. Any noticeable uniformity issues?

As always, it depends on what you're viewing and how picky you are. Mine has clouding in the bottom left and upper right corners, but it hasn't bothered me yet. I had much worse clouding on my Samsung, so this is definitely an improvement. Going to test more now that it has gotten dark outside, so I'll report back if it's suddenly a huge issue.

The thing that's kind of bumming me out now is that it really isn't very bright at all. That works just fine in controlled conditions like with plasma, but our living room is really sunny almost all day and in the evening. The Samsung could defeat the sunlight just fine, but the Sony is struggling to drown out the living room lamps. Right now, it looks like I either put this in the bedroom with controlled lighting conditions (cause having a 55 inch television in the bedroom is totally normal, right?), or I take it back to the store. Really don't want to return it though, but it was pretty damn expensive.

Are the low input lag tests on the Sony TVs from Game Mode or do the TVs in general have low input lag? I have a SONY HX929 and there is definatley some lag, but it it basically gone in Game Mode. However, Game Mode doesn't look quite as good as some of the other modes.

does anyone with a gt50 plasma want to share their game mode settings?
i've had the tv for a while now and gave up trying to get a decent looking game mode
i use the cnet custom mode settings for basically everything, but the input lag is pretty bad compared to game mode
anytime i boot up my console and switch to game mode and watch the picture get shittier i just kind of let out an "aw man"

They are around 30ms if not in game mode, which is still not bad and lower than most other TV's out there.

wasup guy i want to buy a new tv should i go plasma or lcd i have a budget of 800$ iv read that panasonic make great plasma . thanks in advance :)

Thanks, Deepo. Pulling the trigger.

Just a little more feedback after further testing: Turning on the [LED Dynamic Control] to Low seems to kill off the clouding totally as far as I can see. The setting introduces some kind of local dimming functions in addition to the edge LED. Seems to work superbly, and can be activated in Game mode too. Not sure if it affects input lag yet though.

Still not sure about keeping the set, but starting to zero in on some better settings now. Really bummed about the daytime performance still.

In conclusion: buying a new TV is always a much bigger pain in the ass than anything else! But it's also very much worth it when/if you find something great.

So GAF, what should it be...Samsung LCD UE40F7090 vs. Panasonic PLASMA TX-P42GTW60?

Right now i have a Samsung LCD from nearly 6 years ago, its okay but its time to level up so to speak.
Since i am a gamer first and foremost, input lag and IR are my primary concerns, picture quality and the ability to calibrate my set are also very important. (I dont want a Sony because they offer quite limited options for calibration, even though the lack of input lag is awesome.)

Now, since my current set is quite old, i believe that the Samsung would make me totally happy because modern LCD´s don´t suffer from the extensive trailing effects, the only problem would be the low motion resolution compared to plasmas. The Samsung has over 40ms of input lag though, but i don´t want to know how much my current set has :-/
Otherwise, most PC gaming master race monitors are LCD´s and nobody complained about motion resolution in the last couple of years.

The Plasma seems to offer a vastly superior image quality in terms of black levels (naturally) and full motion resolution, but i have never owned a Plasma and somewhat fear image retention and phosphor trails. I dont want to have a "break in" period so to speak, i want to use that damn thing right away. The Plasma also has only half the input lag.

What do you think? :)

Anyone going to be gaming on a monitor next-gen? I'm currently looking for a 24 inch monitor for around £200-£350. Any recommendations?

I was thinking of one of these:

BenQ XL2411T
BenQ XL2420T

EDIT: It will be used for PC gaming and console gaming (PS4).

It was a hell of a wait, but I got my ZT.
I'll have to set it up later today - wouldn't want to break it right out of the box trying to lift it by myself. Here's hoping everything works out when it's plugged in.

Smokey, is that the D8000? If so, I feel your pain.

I'm buying the same TV (55W905A) mainly for gaming in two weeks.

How does it fares when it comes to motion blur? As far as I could tell from reviews that was the only issue it had with gaming considering that motion blur is an issue most LCDs/LED TVs with fast moving images.

I'm coming from a Panny 65VT50 that died, and I'm frankly afraid of motion blur issues on LEDs...I never even owned a LED TV...

Lima

Yes motion blur is an issue you will notice. Especially coming from a plasma. You can still enable the motion flow technology to get a crystal clear 1080 motion resolution. Only downside is that you get about 20 ms more input lag on the Sony bringing it to around 35 ms total. Which is still lower than almost all other sets currently on the market.

Isn't it a fairly recent model ? How did it die ?

Samsung PN60F5500, 60" plasma 3d. I saw favorable impressions, input lag is rated great in the database. I think I'll order it next pay.

It's time to retire my Sony SXRD 55A3000.

Trying real hard to figure which plasma to go with.

Panasonic ST60
+great picture
+great value
-input lag
-IR a bigger issue on Panny from impressions

Panasonic VT60
+superb picture
+less lag issue
-price jump
-IR a bigger issue on Panny from impressions

Samsung 8500
+great picture (just over ST60, and under VT60)
+less lag issue
+really love the stand and remote actually
+IR less of an issue on Sammy from impressions
+better 3D i suppose
-price jump

I don't know. I think I just need to let a store let me hook up a game system to the ST60 and see how it feels so I can save $1500.

Samsung also has higher light output so it can get brighter than the Panasonics. Important consideration if you are going to have the set somewhere that gets a lot of light during the daytime (that you can't control).

Oh wow. I moved my PS3 and Wii U over to my 48" rear projection HD CRT. I was mainly using it for old school games and Wii. I'm legitimately in awe. The games look incredible. Literally perfect, as if the CRT gives it free AA. The only negatives are the TV looking a little dark (boosted the brightness to make it better) and the overscan is a bit bad (3% on the sides and top and 5% on the bottom). Thankfully I only notice it on the PS3 with the PS Store and on the Wii I I only notice it on the bottom of the screen (some text is cut off a bit).

Overall, some downsides but it's much better than my LCD TV. I'm gonna miss this behemoth when I move 3 or 4 years from now.

48" CRT? How much does that thing weigh?

I had one of those 32" widescreen Trinitrons. From what I remember, its pretty close to being 100kg or 200 pounds. Thank god we have plasmas and LCDs, those Trinitrons are still awesome but fuck moving them. Those DLP TVs are even worse since they're TV and furniture combined into one unholy mass.

so guys I have about $1700 to spend on a new tv, obviously gaming is my number one use. Looking for a tv from 55"-65" more then likely going for a 55" or 60" model over a larger 65". Smart tv functions arent important as I will have my xbox one and ps4 for that. 3D isnt a must have either. Although I know a lot of Gaffers love their plasmas, I am not a fan. I work 3rd shift and often find myself falling asleep with the tv on, image retention even though temporary is a pretty big turn off for me. Also the buzzing I have heard from 2 friends that have panny plasmas was irritating though im sure with use you get used to it.

Last summer I bought a 55" LG led lcd from amazon, the first set arrived with a cracked panel but no other issues. The replacement unit had very bad uniformity issues, needless to say I expected much more in $1600 set. Will be wall mounting in a lower level room but a room that typically has a lot of natural lighting.

Took 3 guys an hour to carry it up a single staircase. I really wish I could take it when I move, but it's probably too much effort. I'll probably splurge on a super nice set when I end up moving.

I have the same SXRD and still love it. Good picture and no lag, I'm dreading the day it dies. I know newer TVs probably look better but I love it for gaming. Thanks for your plasma summary; so I'm assuming you've ruled out LCD?

Yeah, it's a fantastic set, I've loved it. I've gone through 2 or 3 bulb changes.
I just want to move into inky blacks and eliminate the overscan which has always bothered me a bit.

Yeah, no LCD. I'm definitely a picture quality freak so even if I have to baby the plasma a bit, I'm willing to do so.

Just had a Panasonic 60" S60 arrive today. I haven't calibrated yet and probably won't bother until I have put a few hundred hours in but I have turned off all the picture ruining features (e.g. vivid colour, pixel perfect etc). All I can say is I am amazed at how good a picture this TV puts out and it's the cheapest in the Panasonic range. Now I have the second last Kuro (508, elite in US) that has been ISF calibrated (about 4 years ago) but I have now just realised it's time to get it calibrated again. The blacks this screen put out are phenomenal and make my Kuro's look grey (I am not saying this is a better screen then the Kuro, just that the Kuro needs some adjusting). Out of the box settings on Cinema mode (sans the picture 'enhancement' settings) are really good, colours pop, the bezel disappears into the screen I am just incredibly impressed with this screen.

Of course once I turn the lights on, or open curtains the picture downgrades, but I knew that and I bought this as a gaming TV in a light controlled room. So happy with it :D. Crappy picture incoming:

edit I think I need to calibrate my ST50 as well because the blacks I see here are much greater :)

Regarding Samsung 8500

Cons
Minor buzz with brighter scenes
Mild floating blacks with Black Optimiser engaged
Sometimes images just look too clean and pristine
Input Lag is too high for gamers
HDMI inputs are too close to the edge
Base stand might be a sticking point in some set-ups and for those with no taste

http://www.avforums.com/reviews/Sam...-64F85000-3D-Plasma-TV-Review_552/Review.html

I think whatever choice you will end up with of the 3 you have mentioned, you will be very happy.
I was kinda in the same spot, but i had the Sony w905a in the equation aswell. I ended up going with the VT60.

VT60 is what I'm leaning towards as well. Will just need to save a bit more.

Just in time for PS4 I suppose.

Hello everyone.
I just bought a samsung 40F6400.
I found the image to be a little too greenish for my tastes ( in sky hd) so i tried to use the white balance in order to fix it.
I don't have a colorimeter and i don't know how to properly calibrate (tried to read some guides but they are too long and complicated) so i used just the eyes and tweaked the RGB Gain and Offset a bit: after many tries i have just lowered green and slighty uppered the blue in RGB Gain and left RGB Offset controls untouched.
I'm quite happy with the result but now i'm worried that by turning those menu up and down so rapidly to see the effects on the colors, i may have somewhat damaged the tv.
Is it possible to damage a screen just by calibration of white balance?
thanks

No you won't damage the tv using the white balance controls, they are there to be used for adjustment. I'm assuming here you are talking about the controls in the regular user menu because you can definitely screw up your tv if you go messing around in the service menu if you don't know what you are doing.

That said, however, it is impossible to correctly set white balance by eye.
