Media Create Sales: Week 27, 2013 (Jul 01 - Jul 07)

Tomodachi Collection has now overtaken Dragon Quest VII for total sales and is the second best selling game of 2013 (after Animal Crossing).

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Actually, looking at Amazon.co.jp, the game is selling out (just 7% of discount, usually it's 18-20%).

I suspect bomba

Probably. It's weird though. The game looks rather good and is basically Pokémon with demons/SMT for kids to put it in simple terms. I still expect moderate sales instead of an outright bomba but who knows what their expectations are.

Youkai Watch's sales must be analysed in the long run, not just because it's a Level 5 title, but also because the cross-media promotion won't start now, but later.

An anime tie-in game with no anime, only Level 5.

smh

I guess the golden years of Layton and Inazuma Eleven are over.

I expect Yokai Watch to do very good numbers for a new IP, it looks too good to be a bomba. Hopefully it has a decent debut but has long legs like the first Inazuma once the anime starts airing.

10./00. [3DS] Toriko: Gourmet Battle! <RPG> (Bandai Namco Games) {2013.07.04} (¥5.980) - 12.489 / NEW <20%> 62.000 units shipped.

[3DS] Toriko: Gourmet Monsters! (Bandai Namco Games) {2012.12.13} - 41.000 / 127.000
Why did the second Toriko bomb so bad compared to the first one? Time of release?

IIRC, Level 5 didn't consider Inazuma Eleven as a cross-media franchise, at least not to the extent it does now. The anime just sort of happened. The importance of the anime-game relationship wasn't considered as important in the beginning when Level 5 created the game.

Wasn't the same with Inazuma Eleven?

The Inazuma anime started airing two months after the game's release. So, the game released before it, but not by half a year like it is the case with Yokai Watch.

But, don't worry, I'm certain Level 5 will have Yokai Watch Boost ready for the start of the TV series.

Skylanders was also released today, right? I think it was only being sold on toys'r us japan, so i'm interested if it will even make a dent for any console.

I don't know, but that would explain why it debuted with 41k copies sold, lol.

Yup, same deal. Also the reason why the sequel had such a crazy sale surge.

Then again it's not like having an anime already out when your cross-media game releases guarantees its success... See Gyrozetter.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Level 5 should go back to being an outsourced company, their sales haven't been great recently (+ overshipped), not to mention the only thing good about their games are the graphics.

That is still really really expensive for Japan, especially when the dominant platform goes for less than half that amount.
Hmm.

The Sega Sony thread had me looking up a bit of history.

If the PS4 launches for ¥39,980K is it that really really expensive, historically?

I know the price can't be looked at in isolation, as there will be a cheaper Wii U and the dominant platform 3DS is much cheaper as well.

But the PS2 launched at essentially the same price, apparently.
And the PSX apparently launched at only slightly cheaper at ¥37K.

The problem with that price has more to do with the present economic and gaming climate than it does precedent. It's hard to gauge, at least in my uneducated opinion, how the Japanese market will react to something that is probably still considered a high entry price, especially compared to the handheld alternatives. I think a bigger issue than price in that territory is the lack of compelling japanese software at the moment, but that can easily change between now and launch.

Well Layton is done for but Inazuma still sells pretty well and Fantasy Life was also a pretty decent success which could be turned into a franchise. Little Battler W bombed but the 3DS re-release of the original did really well all things considered, so maybe the upcoming 3DS games will do well too.

Seriously they're not even close to being in real trouble, despite loosing a lot of steam coming from the DS era.

Different genres, I believe. The PSP games were also in a different genre.

http://www.siliconera.com/2013/07/1...ed-world-red-sure-sounds-like-monster-hunter/

This quite confirms what I said earlier in the thread.

One Piece x Monster Hunter sure sounds like one hell of a combo.

That description doesn't really sound like Monster Hunter... Can we really see it as a sign of MH clones appearing on 3DS?

I'm not sure about Japan specifically, but I wouldn't be surprised if, when affordably priced, new systems will sell by virtue of being "real" next gen* systems alone.

*N.B. anyone who takes issue with this, I'm not interested in semantic discussions.

Wiki says the PS2 launched with:
 • A-Train 6
 • DrumMania
 • Eternal Ring
 • Kakinoki Shogi IV
 • Kessen
 • Mahjong Taikai III
 • Morita Shogi
 • Ridge Racer V
 • Stepping Selection
 • Street Fighter EX3
Not sure whether that was supposed to be a killer launch line up to drive transition.

The PS3 had a major price problem. And the 360 was the 360.

Not sure whether a potential 40K yen price will be too off-putting for the Japanese consumer though.
The PS2 also had BC and DQVII.

Level 5 should go back to being an outsourced company, their sales haven't been great recently (+ overshipped), not to mention the only thing good about their games are the graphics.
The story in YW is quite charming too. Layton also had good stories in the anime mystery/spectacle kind of sense. And doing a soccer RPG, that's a pretty ingenious idea (there already were anime soccer strategy games though).

The rotatable party roster in YW is a simple yet deep idea to use touch mechanics strategically. The puzzles in Layton are well done. Using drawing paths for soccer strategy wasn't new but it's still an interesting gameplay mechanic.

Most of the L5 games I played had a certain degree of polish that goes beyond graphics and presentation. I think their major problem is churning out too many games with too similar gameplay.

Layton and Inazuma Eleven were two great original franchises for expanded audiences and kids respectively and it would be a shame to lose that. I don't think that their games are amazing but besides Nintendo there aren't many publishers/developers making good games aimed at these audiences.

It just feels that recently they've been trying to create multimedia franchises instead of actually good games. And Hino really needs to step down as a writer, good lord.

Where have you been all the time Takao?

I've been really busy lately, so my GAF usage in general has been down by a good amount. As for these threads in particular, I'd grown tired of the typical topics of conversation a while ago, and rather than complain about it, or point out the obvious ("This game is selling well!" or "This game is selling poorly!") I've gone silent. I still read a good chunk of these threads, but only comment when I feel I should.

With a good launch window lineup ( Yakuza, Tales, GT6, FF15) the 40k yen price would not be bad at all and PS4 could cement itself as the 2nd leading platform to 3ds. We are still way too far out to start analyzing the ps4 well though. All we know is that it should start better than ps3 at the very least

FFXV is launch window? I'm more expecting it to launch at the end of 2014 at the earliest

I meant if it was in the launch window the price wouldn't be so bad assuming they are going for 40k yen. The lack of BC in Japan is going to hurt the most.
I think it's flat-out tragic what Level 5 did to Layton. Those games should have been an occasional treat, not an iterative, annualised treadmill.

I mean I see where you are coming from, but at the same time is there any guarantee the series would have remained as relevant with slower releases?

Doesn't seem a good first day of sale for Youkai Watch according to retailers blogs.

Sellthrough from that blog:

Dead Island - 30-40%
Youkai Watch - 25-30%
Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection - 20%

Given it's a Level 5 title, 25-30% seems like usual business, isn't it?

Releasing a second trilogy this close to the first was a huge mistake I wager. After Unwound Future the series just fell off a cliff but they continued driving the lane. Afaik the latest one didn't even hit 300k.

Well it's like retailers are not learning at all and always order way too much ?

Does L5 give better terms to retailers than other Japanise publishers ?

I guess retailers just trust that Level-5's games will eventually sell out even if they start slowly. Youkai Watch for example is mainly targeted at kids who probably won't pick up games at launch day and are strongly influenced by the word of mouth of their classmates. A slow start is okay as long as its keep selling.

Since all the Famitsu details have made it up onto Famitsu's site, here's a brief note about them. There's not really enough to give that much analysis so this will be shorter quips.

1.) Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F 2

- They didn't show much, but so far it basically looks the same as the last game with some minor graphical improvements. One thing of note is that they only sent Famitsu Vita screenshots despite the PS3 version looking a fair bit better, so presumably they still view that as the main platform. The way the official site is set up though leads me to believe they're still likely a simultaneous release though.

2.) Sengoku Basara 4

- For some reason the visuals in this game actually look slightly worse than the last game. It's kind of impressive in a bad way. That said, I'm not sure if that really has an impact on the fan base, but they aren't using their PS3 only status to improve things on a visual/technological level.

3.) Ranko Tsukigime’s Longest Day

- This is the Short Peace game from Namco Bandai made by Crispy’s (Tokyo Jungle) and written by Suda51. Short Peace is a four part anime movie by the creator of Akira, and this game is seen as the fifth part. It's supposed to be a highly accessible 2D sidescrolling action game. Four screenshots were released, all of which look pretty much the same. I've included one below. Based on the concept and the screenshots in combination with the region, I'm not really expecting it to be a big hit, but I would have been very wrong about Tokyo Jungle's sales potential had you asked me to guess.

Looks a bit like shadow complex. Maybe if the movie does well the game could see some good sales.

On paper? Sure. The CPU is also still dual core.

Yeah the Vita has a few advantages in that it has dedicated VRAM, a quad core, and some extensions on the GPU along with a dedicated low level API.

That said, as of this Fall it will probably be trounced in performance to the point that it loses despite this, but only on the top end devices.

Not too high, most people who were waiting for Pikmin 3 are probably just picking that one up next week and for everyone else, the used market exists too.

The movie will not do well. It's a prestige production (talked about it with one of the producers and Otomo last year) and its theaters release (next week if I'm right) should be limited a it's always the case with these sort of productions. And it's an "omnibus" movie (4 shorts) released the same day than the new Miyazaki/Ghibli movie. This movie will be a "blip" at the box office.
