FRIDAYTON MK II: 5.5 million bears and salmon create unholy allliance to sack SONY HQ

Why is this a surprise to anyone?
SONY is, first and foremost, a repackager. They go around shopping for tech that other companies have invented. Their engineering department is comprised mostly of "checklist engineers", meaning that they only check that every component is where they should be. They don't design the next memory technology like Samsung does, they don't design GPUs like AMD and Nvidia, they don't design CPUs like intel. All they do is buy these components from the above manufacturers and check that all the technology is in the right place.
Ooohhhhh.

You baad!

You've just described how nearly ever electronic device is made congrats.

It is not truth your are spouting it is pure bullshit coming our of your mouth just for attention and to rile members up

As I said before, I think posts like that or sarcastic drive by trolling should be toned down. If people can't help but containing themselves from passive aggressively trolling then they should be kept out of the discussion. I'm having a hard time sifting through good concise conversation over the hyperbole.

But Team GDDRFIVE told me that my assertions that a lot of memory would be used for non gaming stuff were false. About how everything would be small and light and such.

I still don't believe but I can see epic meltdowns if confirmed true.

As someone very loosely following this, I'm going to try and figure out what happened.

1. Someone posts the tweet by the director of Eurogamer Spain where he said PS4 Memory Drama.
2. Shitstorm begins.
3. The director clarifies his words on the "drama".
4. Shitstorm intensifies.
5. It is revealed PS4's OS somehow uses a ton of memory, making it nearly on par with Xbone.
6. Shitstorm intensifies.

Am I right?

Not quite.. it's more..

So just to get this straight about what's transpired from yesterday to today..

1. We get a tweet saying there will be some RAM drama
2. People on GAF freak the hell out about Sony removing RAM from the system
3. The tweeter pulls a Baghdad Bob and says, relax everyone, it's not a big deal
4. GAF calms down.. nothing to see here folks
5. Article releases today and we find out half of the RAM will be used for the OS
(which is basically like Sony removing roughly half the RAM for game purposes)
6. GAF explodes

Hm..

That's bigger than I thought it was going to turn out to be. Doesn't mean they can't reduce the memory footprint later on though.

Smokey has a point, the RAM allocation is used as a negative in every PS4/X1 thread and now there are people defending Sony doing the same thing. This kind of stuff happens on message boards.

I don't deny it's pretty shitty if it's true, I just question that it is true, or that we have the entire story yet.

Brilliant, I love this thread, esp even more in other thread. So exposed that help who are my okay or not okay lists.

I'm not looking for a PC wannabe. And when you have developers wanting more and more RAM all the time, I'm gonna take a step back and realize that hey they know what to do if you give them more RAM. I'm not going to act like I know shit, and that Devs don't need the additional RAM nor do they know what to do with it, and now I will be paying for a bunch of shit I don't even care.

Might as well just spend the money on a real PC.

Developers always want more RAM, but going beyond what they have available now is more for convenience than performance. In an ideal world, a developer would love to just load their entire 50GB game into RAM at once. This makes their jobs a bit easier when it comes to software development, but it doesn't mean it's going to increase performance if the GPU isn't up to it. All I'm saying is that 5GB is more than enough to push the rest of the system's hardware to its limits, and the additional RAM provides more value by being used at the system level.

More ram? I thought 8gb was 8gb. Anyways, its not about that. Its about Sony not being honest upfront. First they report 1GB for the OS and now this. Its deceptive just to drive up hype for the system.

Sony have never stated the OS footprint, it has always just been forum speculation.

Or are you just gonna keep ignoring being told this?

What does any of that have to do with any of this???

That's perfectly reasonable, actually.

They are giving room to their OS development team to match whatever Ms comes up with xbox one so they don't get caught out of memory to implement those features too like happened this gen.

Also, later down the road, if the OS requirements are reduced new games could benefit from it, but if OS requirements increased you can't recompile previously released games to cope with that.
Sanity!

How? Original it was 1GB for OS and now its 3.5GB. When we all knew out the game that 3GB on Xbox One was reserved for the OS. Its just PR lies from the beginning to out do whatever MS is doing. If you cant see, its not my fault.

How in the living hell could anyone take you seriously when Sony never said the OS took 1GB of OS.

Posts like yours are why I want to ignore users but have no one on my blocked list.

So...with their original plans of using only 4GB DDR5...one had to buy 0,5GB DDR5 and lay it on top when buying the console or what? Really weird.

You've just described how nearly ever electronic device is made congrats.

Indeed. It's just funny how Apple fanboys think Apple engineered the Retina Display. Anyone who thinks Consumer Electronics companies' engineers do anything other than check that the components that someone else engineered are in the right place is probably no older than 12.

What I'm really wondering about is: why did it take until now to leak this information?
I mean it's available the moment someone use PS4 devkit and sony is giving devkits like "candy".

I get that this is just a reservation so that as they add new OS features, they don't run out of memory because devs made games that used 7GB, but 3.5GB reserved?

What does any of that have to do with any of this???

Consumer Electronics companies tend to have incompetent engineers compared to manufacturers.
Consumer Electronics companies' engineering departments comprise of "checklist engineers". These are 2nd rate engineers from some no-name state school.
Manufacturing companies' engineers comprise of MIT grads who design the next generation memory or CPU architecture.

Why is this a big deal? Isn't this the same RAM allocation on the Xbox One?
Not a big deal because multiplats would have most likely used the lowest common denominator anyways.

It is hilarious because some Sony warriors will have to remove that point from their why ps4 is awesome Macros.

Also historically Sony is slow as hell updating their OS so this really seems like a waste

Please put a cork in that bullshit. Sony never reported anything officially, unlike MS.

To be fair Sony played up the 8GB part of the RAM. When they did that, they were talking about how it will benifit the games. Seeing how much they use for OS purposes is dissapointing to say the least. I am kinda pissed off right now. And if this is true, I am all for busting their balls for this!
