I GOT A TAG!!!

Just so people know, the link in your tag leads to:

I like how a couple posters are making the whole "Netflix is free on PSN" thing seem like a reactionary decision from Sony to compete with Microsoft.

No. All media apps were free on PSN from the get-go. Face it, Sony believes in the carrot, and not the stick...

Doesn't this news (indirectly) confirm that the Xbone game dvr solution is software implemented, rather than through dedicated hardware as in the PS4? It'd be beyond foolness to put a hw feature behind a paywall to unlock...

People are willing to demand more/better, it's just Microsoft won't listen.
Microsoft doesn't listen because enough people are willing to pay them anyway.

Demanding better in this case means being willing to not buy an XBox One at all so long as these policies are in place. The only way MS will ever change is if they believe they're losing more money by charging than not.

It's not a surprise and us Live members know its a screw job but oh we'll it's what you got to do.
See? "Sucks, but what can you do...?" I'll tell you: don't buy their hardware if you think it's a screw job. Grumbling about it is meaningless if you're doing it while forking over your money.

Refraining from letting them get away with it also means the XBox you buy tomorrow instead of today will have less bullshit attached, but I'm constantly amazed at the number of people who--even realizing all this--still manage to actively not care.

This is why I'm so glad that MS announced that I'll still be able to use my Elgato with the XboxOne, besides my PX5's, best money I've spent on my gaming hobby.

They should use that always on Kinect to only let you have a girlfriend if you pay for xb-live.

Kinect should scan for women when you are not in the room and then whisper, "dump him, he has a tiny penis."

If you pay for live it will whisper, "he's rich and has a big penis."

Microsoft has always been about consumer choice.

Yeah especially as their $60 controller only includes a place to put a battery/batteries whereas their closest competitors controller includes a battery from the get go at the same price......

Overdelivering on value

Fully realize you were being sarcastic btw

So... what you're saying is, even though every other device does not charge for media app access, the only reason they do so is because Microsoft had it first, and that somehow justified Microsoft placing media app access behind a paywall???

Completely asinine...

I'm saying MS putting it behind a pay wall to begin with was justified at the time since it was a premium service with no real living room competition. How is that asinine?

I'm aware, yes. I'm sure it makes you feel great.

What does this have to do with the topic of this thread?

Realistically the Xbone is a $560 console day one with a recurring ping on the wallet yearly. What value!

It's firmware - it's going to be software sold with hardware day one, else the hw won't do anything.

Not surprised by anything Microsoft does anymore. How long will it be before you need gold to power up the console?

How long before the U-turn then?

Incredibly miserly of them.

Gamescom at the lastest. If not by then, then probably never unless PS4 completely dominates them saleswise and Xbox Ones are being left on the shelves.

It would be pretty stupid if this turns out to be a stunt and they pull a "see we listen to consumers, apps and stuff are not behind paywall anymore" in their gamescom showcase rather than just outright announcing that they're no longer behind the paywall.

Considering how intensive the feature's likely to be on Microsoft's servers this is absolutely expected and reasonable.

I've never understood why everyone is so passionate about their hatred towards XBL. If you look for deals AT ALL, Ive gotten every year of XBL for $30-$35 bucks. I know paywalls are the devil, PC online gaming is free, etc. and that's fine. I get not liking that stuff.

I just have a hard time understanding how so many can drop thousands on their hobby their passionate about, and then be up in arms over $2.50 a month for what, IMO, is a solid online service. :/ I know, Im part of the problem.

More on topic, not surprised, and can't believe people are surprised.

So say I were to charge you $5/month to bypass a barrier that prevents you from retrieving a magazine from your mailbox...

Would you call that asinine or a "premium service"?

I don't think many will have either an Xbox One or PS4 and not have Xbox Live or PS+, so the whole uproar about what's locked and what isn't really feels like nothing but manufactured console wars bullshit where people are appalled that features they won't use on a console they won't buy will be locked behind a service they won't pay for.

As someone that has both Live and PS+, I'm glad when stuff gets added to them. I don't really understand being angry about more stuff, doubly so when it's not on a console you own or even plan to own.

I'm trying to give them other suggestions to get people to sign up. Clearly that's the goal.

If that's the case then you should start a "What feature should MS put behind a paywall to get people to buy a gold subscription" thread.

This thread is specifically about the Game DVR feature being behind the Gold Paywall.

And what did they do after the competition started to catch on and actually do better? Bumped Netflix from xbl silver to gold... They could of kept it free but they didn't.

I'm suprised this hasn't turned into:

But Youtube

But Ads

But subscription

but Ads

But Bandwidth

But Ads

BUT PS+!

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

You should never be happy when things are put behind a paywall that should be free. There are times I do not have Gold and would love to watch Netflix, but guess what?

I actually think it is okay if they put multiplayer only behind a paywall as long as the online infrastructure is improved with that money.

You think wrong then. Even the 360 with its various blocked behind paywall features/being "worthless without a gold sub" has less than 30 million gold subscribers out of the 76 million consoles sold.

Nah. I prefer posting here where people clearly don't get overly defensive on the subject.

It's stuff like this that makes me wonder what exactly do we own after spending $500. This is a hardware feature that using harddrive space and your internet bandwith to upload video to Twitch or Youtube right? What are we paying microsoft for? It's bad enough hiding videos and movies on sites that are not microsoft releated.

It like we are paying microsoft so they can buy up exclusive content to prevent us from having a choice.

Expected. Pretty sure their Family Sharing was limited to only Gold Members for that 60mins Demo within the group and accessing Games Library...

Of course this BS will happen.

Personally I don't care about things behind a paywall because I would already pay to game online on the console (Live alone is a big reason to always try to play a multiplayer game on 360, i just find the experience so much better than anywhere else), but yeah don't see any benefit on Ms keeping those stuff behind a paywall. At this point they are letting Sony ride in a sea of good will and even though they also started charging for online they are seen as the good guys that don't put unreasonable stuff under a paywall.

I mean, no other benefit other than direct profits, but I guess that in the long run that is damaging them far more than it's doing good.

I can't believe you're honestly sticking with this ridiculous reasoning. Keep fighting the good fight though.

Putting a paywall in front of a third-party paid service is complety goddamn crazy and would not have worked in any way, shape or form if Microsoft didn't already have thousands of suckers paying monthly for the illusion of "a great online gaming infrastructure".

Not that I don't agree with your point about 3rd party services behind a paywall, but puh-lease on the bold part. Are we now at a point where the online gaming experience on Live is not but an illusion? Or that it's inconceivable that for lots of people it's by itself worth of what they charge for?
