Week of August 12th to the 18th, 2013.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread.

Great title enzo. On that note, that last game in the international was mad hype. Too bad there is no emotional skill moment from the commentators

Reading on twitter and people are talking about how much DOTA 2 is getting compared to FGC events.

It definitely had some of that FGC-like hype in there.

I haven't watched many eSports events but I usually get pretty turned off by the production and presentation and general atmosphere, but I didn't feel that way with TI3. They did a pretty good job of being serious while not making everything feel overly sterile.

We really need some sort of sit-down on like UltraChen about the economics of the FGC relative to other scenes (TCGs, MOBAs, etc.)

Capcom isn't even remotely close to being in a position to support their games the way that a company like Valve is, leaving a fragmented community with no central authority to keep everyone in line to try and attract sponsors while idiot top players play joke grand finals matches and prominent community members get on stream and call people faggots. It's not that hard to understand.

Basically, more people should play NRS games so we can get that WB money.

TI3 was like EVO level hype this year, probably even more. The Grand Finals were godlike, big plays after big plays. Some players were worth literally a million dollars.

Yep, agreed. I tuned in for the second half of the GF and intermittently throughout the weekend and it definitely didn't feel like MLG..

Wow 1.4 million for first place. How much money do you guys think the TO pocketed?
every man has his hat price

First page is still for random stuff right?
-----

Wrath Unleashed is one of my favorite fighting games of all time.

Man I remember that game

That game was awful.

I think I sold it to a Gamestop a good number of years ago for like $2, and I feel like that was them giving me too much for it.

Ryan Hart spitting the REALEST RAP! Either that or MONEY. And money always wins.

why MOBA/SC are popular and have big pot bonuses:

1) Played on : PC
Streamed on: PC
Discussed on: PC

the game, stream service, and all benefits all related to the same machine.

2) Cost: free or cheap

SC might have an investement, but the MOBAs anyone can pick up whether in a 3rd world country or any place with a PC. Consoles, not so much since some consoles are too expensive and outright banned in some countries. People would prioritize a PC over a console due to school or work.

Why Fighting games, not so much:

1) Played on: Multiple consoles
Streamed on: Console or PC, but varies
Discussed on: PC mainly

Xbox only can't play with PS Only, Wii users (ha!) on their own. Very annoying to jump from console to PC to stream, or participate with others. Thus fanbase is fragmented.

2) Cost:

Titles are sometimes not available due to disc availability, price, or even region.

no need to lament broke FGC (i am making excuses! ;-;)

Navi vs Orange game 3 was an Evo moment, straight up. Ridiculous comeback

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the majority of esport events have 1 game per genre besides mobas? Is there some connection between esports supporting the strongest contender in the genre and letting the rest die?

also capcom isn't valve in terms of customer loyalty and available money to put back into the tournies.

If they had that valve customer loyalty then I could definitely see them putting more into the fgc

AMERIKAJIN @jiyunaJP
PRO-TIP: Dropping FG's and jumping to #ESPORTS in order to make money is a good way to fail at 2 things. Work on bettering your own scene.

RIP Jiyuna ;_;

Dying for our sins

They should probably work on their public image amirite?

To be fair, most of that prize pool was funded by the community.

Their fanbase is willing to give so much more

Fuck it, going to start a petition for Valve to buy Capcom, so they can then do Capcom All-Stars. 80 character roster, all free, and instead of hats, you buy alternate costumes, taunts, voice packs and colors. Modes will consist of VS, SF and CvS styles of character selection styles.

Then, Valve will buy EVO from the Cannons and Gaben will take Mr. Wizard's place as the fat dude that runs shit behind the scenes.

Valve will do the one thing they're good at (buy studios and make games/communities using their ideas) and the FGC gets saved by eSports.

FUCK COLLUSIONS, HATS ALL THE WAY.

But I like the Cannons and Mr. Wizard ;_;

Just popped open DOTA 2 for the first time in 2 years.....

....and I'm not seeing any of the P2Win stuff that's in LoL? Am I missing something? I'm only seeing P2Customize.

So what you're saying is a free to play PC exclusive fighting game is what we need?

Don't worry about it, neogaf only mentions the game, they don't actually play it. I already asked.
Kappa

Though I have heard that most keys are basically all bought out. Hopefully that is a sign that there is a lot of interest in it over in China. I really like it, hardest part is trying to find people to play with. I just hop on the #xdzw irc (not a lot of peopel on it honestly) or check my friendlist and hope someone has time to play.

Yep. Valve/Blizzard loyalty borders on cultish. Special cases, difficult to compare.

Somehow though, Riot has built up something respectable (that happens when you revitalize a genre) while the FGC's only chance is Capcom. A company that even the players in the FGC are uneasy with because of decisions across this gen. And yet they are the only ones who can really do anything about it.

I think platforms has a lot to do with it, but because of the controls required and the focus on IRL competition instead of predominately online competition, PC isn't the saving grace people would like it to be either that would allow the same sort of growth. Netcode just isn't as good and likely never will be.

Therein lies the FGC, walled off on some sides and where open, those that can do anything about it aren't. Enjoy 5 more years of SF4.

Having the games on PC, having the developers care about the game and its community, f2p, I can go on, but fightings games will never reach those levels at the moment. I mean shit capcom seems like its on its last leg funding their own game.

Nah. They just need more hype.

Guys, we should create and Kickstart a new fighting game IP called Highway Brawler, it can be PC and F2P and we can revitalize the FGC and get tons of money to magically surge in!

Because there isn't any Pay 2 Win stuff in DOTA 2. All the game play mechanics are completely unlocked from the start (all the heroes etc).
Netcode just isn't as good and likely never will be.
GGPO says otherwise.
