Yeah. I set my expectations way too high for this one.

Its because of the OP

So nice to be in my own bed again and get some regular sleep. I've been running off of fumes for the last three days or so. Anyway this was my big success from Otakon even though it ruined my sleep schedule for the weekend (I had to wake up between 4 and 6 the entire weekend).

Nice pick-up there!

For what it's worth, it has one of the catchiest OPs in recent years.

It really is. It will never leave!

PVs and news from the weekend that I don't think we've covered yet, thanks as always to Moonphase for aggregating links:

Tokyo Ravens looks suitably like Kaze no Stigma, Tokyo Underground, and pretty much every other urban fantasy manga adaptation ever. Plus CG mech things!

Nagi no Asukara has beautiful background art, but looks unfortunately like low-tier PA Works (it's very reminiscent of RDG and presumably uses the same staff). The trailer also gives as little away about the presumably supernatural elements of the story as possible - or, in fact, if there's much animation in the show at all...

Plus, as I believe ANN has covered, there's an official announcement of an anime for Donten ni Warau ("Smiling on a Cloudy Day"). Meiji-era slashy supernatural samurai brothers, judging by the plot synopses I've read - DTL have you read the manga for this?

Thanks for the PV vids. Artwise none of it is grabbing me particularly.

Nagi no Asukara looks amazing. Good character cast, though kind of reminds me more of From the New World (1st arc)...maybe its the outfits.

Donten ni Warau may check out, though I usually avoid some of the things its tagged as.

Is that Spike?

iirc, it's one of these shows like Karneval or Makai Ouji. Meaning it will probably be :dtl but also not very good.

The pattern is "How good is the director?"

I feel that's really only consistent if a director is already good, or a director is so bad there's no room for improvement though. Tari Tari and Uchoten are both shows which I don't think people expected to be as good as they were because the previous works of those directors at PA Works were underwhelming.

Edit: Shit I totally forgot about Canaan. That throws the theory completely out of the window even if the director is good! >_<

Who the fuck is the target audience for Nagi no Asukara? Looks like a DTL show.

It's an otaku show - manga in Dengeki Daioh and all, moeblob designs - but there's a lot of focus on the (presumably) shota-looking male lead here.

I've had a quick flick through the first chapter of the manga; I'm not quite sure what to make of it. Interesting premise, but not necessarily a particularly interesting story to go along with it.

DTL, it's definitely not a BL show; the guys in that shot appear to be in a love triangle over the female lead.

This looks like eroge adaptation tbh.

Fresh Pretty Cure!: 04

Ugh... babies.... why babies....

Also, looks like some quality animation is already cropping up. In the fourth episode, no less. Good job, guys!

Fair enough.

I thought that magical good that Dodo made that that kid bought was gonna turn him into a chicken or something. Instead it was just an ugly thing that doesn't do anything.

Neon Genesis Evangelion 5-6

So this 'catches' me up where the first Rebuild movie ends. Clearly the movie took episode 6 and added a lot of fanfare and suspense to taking out that Angel, which was in my opinion done quite well - so watching the original afterwards seemed to lack a bit of suspense in comparison. It was still fun to watch though. Will probably be a while before I can continue from here.

There are a few major differences between the series 1 - 6 and Rebuild 1.0 beyond the extension of the Ramiel fight although discussing them would almost seem spoilery.
I think this is one of the few times I have seen the Rebuild films compared favorably to the series!
I don't think many people would argue that the Ramiel fight was more exciting in the series than the movie although to what end that matters is questionable.

While I'm here, knowing my limited free time and peculiar tastes, is there anything from this year I really should watch other than Eternal Family and Flowers of Evil?

By Eternal Family do you mean The Eccentric Family? Because the only shows that are actually worth your time are The Flowers of Evil and The Eccentric Family. Everything else is forgettable.

Half of Uchouten Kazoku 6

I've had just about enough of endless conversations concerning tanuki stew and eating in general. The tinges of borderline vore fetishism this show's had going for a while now are really starting to rub me the wrong way, tbh. I'm really hoping it moves away from that as I was really enjoying this show before.

It's Eccentric Family (Uchouten Kazoku), just so you don't get confused.

You've seen Wolf Children, right? Otherwise, I'd suggest Garden of Words, Jinsei Best Ten, and Death Billiards. You might also take a look at Rozen Maiden.

Haha, yes, I was confusing it with a short cartoon from like 1996. My bad.

That is what I thought, and it is good to have confirmation! ty.

Oh yes, and from the Otona Joshi no Anime Time series of one off OVA stories I'd recommend Jinsei Best 10 . Death Billiards is worth a watch as well.

Oh yeah, I forgot all about Wolf Childen, that's obviously great too.

Hmm, it's interesting how many shows I've watched that I wouldn't actively recommend.

Oh, did you go to the Kanno signing on Friday? I think I saw you walking around carrying a huge-ass folder/board thingy, and I was wondering what the heck was in there. That's nice!

I know that Okama is credited as character designer on Glass Fleet but I really have to wonder just how involved he was because, even if he's done some pretty eccentric stuff (see: Getsumen to Heiki Miina, Bizarre Jelly), none of it was ever overtly insane or aesthetically void in the way that Glass Fleet costuming is.

Perhaps they just asked him to go totally crazy?

Yeah 4-6 had some bigger differences,
Lilith wasn't there seems to be the big one
.

And yeah I just meant the Remiel fight was more exciting and suspenseful in Rebuild. Otherwise the general pacing of 1-6 seems better than Rebuild, which is unsurprising.

Yeah, that's basically the most important difference and as the series progresses you'll see that it's fairly important difference in terms of motivation and characterisation.
It's one of the greatest triumphs of US dubbing for what it's worth.

Hey now, why are you trying to muscle into what was one of Manga UK's great dubbing achievements and claim it for your own?

Shame. PM it is, then.

Apart from My eccentric Family, Gatchaman Crowds is being good for now, though maybe not in "must watch" levels (it's always relative).

Flowers of Evil is really overrated, as the plot is crap, because the characters don't hold up, they are really really out of what we could call believable people. It's gimmicky in a peculiar way.

Shingeki no Kyojin is also very good, even with some warts. Original setting, good production values, mystery, action, thrilling scenes.

Also Wolf Children and Garden of Words, as some people has said. Death Billiards is pretty decent, watch it because well, it's short.
