Deadlifts could be awkward at lower weights if your gym doesn't have training plates (plates that are the size of a 45 but weigh less than that). You could do them as romanian deadlifts at the low weights, or just suck it up and move through a bigger range of motion. If you pick larger RoM be sure to keep your back straight.

Just do what my wife does and grab a couple of the aerobics steps to put the bar on. It's not perfect but it will give your back a little more breathing room.

Not that she'll need them much longer, she's at 130 currently :D

Set new PRs today on both bench and deadlift, after clearing a long sought-after PR on overhead press two days ago. I'm on a roll! My bench hovered around 60 kg for several years because I didn't feel confident about adding weight. It was just scary. But something clicked a few weeks ago, and I started adding. Now I've gone up to 77,5 kilos pretty easily, and finally bench more than my bodyweight. 80 kilos on Sunday!

Any thoughts on barbell moves / squat types that would hit my glutes and hamstrings beyond the basic squat?

There's a kind of lunge using the smith machine that was posted here some pages ago. It sounds really janky, but hits your hamstrings and glutes real hard. I did it for the first time on Sunday, and could barely walk yesterday.

There was a video here of some Mexican bodybuilder who used that exercise in his hamstring workout routine. Here's another video, calling it a Smith Rear Lunge. The Mexican guy stood on a step pad while doing it. I did that too, and it felt pretty good, letting you go real deep before exploding up.

Rereading your question, you asked for barbell exercises, and this isn't one. Sorry about that, but I kinda like this one because it's finally a good use for a smith machine :)

yeah I posted that video of El Morris, Mr Mexico 2010, many pages back,

I am glad somebody found that video useful, nobody said anything back then :p, I haven't been able to try it since we don't have steps or boxes near the smith machine to do the exercise exactly like he does it but it must be great for the Hamstring and probably less stressful than leg curls, I hate those, I always feel like tearing a muscle.

Thanks for posting it! Here's the video. I actually felt it most in the glutes. That's where I got the DOMS, anyway.

Turns out amazon sell Quest bars in the UK. This I did not know. I'll pony up on pay day for a pack.

expensive, aren't they?? I could buy them easily in Germany if I wanted but 3 euros for a protein bar is terrible business. no quest bars for me.

Yeah they are. Works out at £2.50 a bar. For £20 more I could get a 2.5Kg tub of protein.....but they look so tasty.

Jesus Khrist, Keto Fog is heavy today! I no longer feel hungry, it's just that I feel somebody put the hand brake on my mind! Trying to study for my PhD Admission exam next month and it's just not doing it. How long does this last?

I think guys like Darth, cooter, mtp, immortal, blackflag and Szu show that consistency yields huge results.

I think of guys like falling, Noema and Petrie as jr versions as the ones above and in 2-3 years will be absolute monsters.

And we can't forget our new guys like sphinx showing that change comes early on with hard work.

And I will say it again, I miss posters like cranky and mully. I hope they didn't fall off the gain train. What about Anton? He hasn't posted in a while.

Looking forward to hearing about your results. I might sack up and do UD2.0 also. Pretty big commitment though. Results are awesome though

How did your run with it turn out?

I did my workout today and it was really difficult, I think I'm going to do all the leg sets on the same day, since splitting it is just brutal.

If it's like this every week I can handle it though, if the depletion days are the worst I've made it through the fire so far.

I know I'm always the fluffy happy person, but really I think all the regulars in the thread are amazing in their own way. I might have a nice physique, but Cooter and Imm0rt4l have the strength along with their bodies and do amazing things that I'm always in awe of.

Then there's OogieBoogie. He's like the Flash where I'm the Hulk. He'd run laps around me and have me pinned down so fast...!

And I call myself a Hulk when you have the uberlifters. You freaks of nature. Warming up with my working sets. :( Fark, Shogun's OHP made me feel like a tiny, tiny man!

But yeah, everyone's already awesome in my book. Just different focuses, but all moving toward their goals. And even if I didn't mention you in this post, trust me I thought of you. :)

(OMG CHEESY)

I understand what falling edge says regarding aesthetics, and I'd say I agree but what truly inspires me is what everybody is doing, in their own circumstances. The key word for me is passion, I think that's the common denominator in this community and that's why I like it. Thanks for mentioning me, Sean, much appreciated. your progress is undeniable too, when you post casual pics, you look damn strong and cold and not flexing, it takes time to reach that point.

regarding me, that's the way I like to think of it, a solid first year come next October, with still lots of things to learn and improve on. I have some resolutions for OT6 but I'll post them once we are there.

regarding special mentions in this thread, I liked Chittagong's development, he is right there transitioning from the fat guy he once was to an atheltic build, improving on strength and has a great attitude. He's going to make it. Evilore is in this track too but haven't seen much of him.

and special mention for the best attitude all-round goes to Sunflower :D (dude, post a progress pic already, with your 6'7 I am sure you look godly)

I hope that those who have arrived in the last days will join us in OT6 and stay with us,

Hey guys, this is my first time posting here. I'm looking for suggestions for food that's easy to prepare and dense in protein. I'm going to college soon and I don't think I'll be able to slim down with the food on campus. Currently I'm 6'3", 230lb with bf %20 (trying to bring that down) .Right now I have a tub of whey, chicken breasts, tuna, cottage cheese, greek yogurt. I'm trying to get daily protein intake to 180g. Any other suggestions?

Lowerback is better so far, fuck regular DLs for a while though gonna stick with deficit snatch grip since it's legs/upperback. Hit 320x3 cgbp improvement over last week, shoulders are complete garbage right now can't do regular bench or any type of OHP without pain. Gonna try 231x20 bb row next week felt pretty good today on those.

Okay dudes, I just wanted to follow up from my earlier posts this morning. All day Ive been reading your responses, and reading the SS wiki, and watching youtube videos.

So lemme lay it all out: Ive been a fool. 100% total whimpering child about this whole training thing. Yes, Ive made some gains for the last 4 months, but Ive been doing it all for the wrong reasons. Ive been neglecting the training aspects of training, and Ive been focusing on the vanity muscles. So yes, Ive hit a plateau because while my biceps have gotten bigger, I havent actually gotten stronger. And now Im not getting any bigger because Im not gaining in strength and therefore cant challenge my body further.

You guys were right. You read me out and I got defensive. But thinking about this all day today, thinking about what Im doing at the gym, obsessing over how I look as opposed to how I feel has been the biggest revelation to me today.

I cant say Im all there yet, but I feel like Im at a cusp of a revelation.

So please be patient, I appreciate the responses and advice. Im already practicing squat form at home with no bar whatsoever, and its tough.

Good to hear man. As a total beginner its much more important to train how your whole body moves as a unit and have a strong sturdy base than to just attack individual muscles for size. Training your central nervous system is more important than training muscles.

Also, doing squats with just bodyweight is actually harder than if you had a bar. Weight on your back helps stabilize you on the way down.

I'm just amazed that the key is squats and deadlifts. Deadlifts look f'en hard to do as well.

Going to have to bulk hard to chase Darth now! Let's go!

Here it is from 12-21-08

Alright guys, any tips. I've been working out since I was 13 and build muscle pretty easily. I had knee surgery and let myself get up to 203 lbs. I'm 5'10 with a medium to large build. I'm 29 and decided to try and cut up about a year ago. It's worked and now I'm down to about 165. I was 162 this morning. I have very defined abs and you can actually see the upper ones but the bottom ones I'm having trouble with. I work every major muscle group once a week and do 600 different ab excercises 4 times a week with a few hundred on the other three. I'm getting the results I want. I'm stronger than I was a year ago and 40 pounds lighter. I am determined to get a six pack though.

I drink about 4 or 5 cups of milk per day, eat bran and yourgurt in the morning with tuna, chicken and other high protien meals for lunch and dinner. I probabbly take in between 2,000 and 2,500 calories per day. Any suggestions.

I need to do some running... my little brother trounced my 1-mile pr by a full minute....

IDK how to train for that and strength effectively at the same though. I suppose that his XC races are 3 miles, so if he's targeting a longer event all fall, I could possibly be superior at the shorter event...

Eggs. Good protein, zero carbs, quick to cook.

Thanks dude. Your post was actually the one that both pissed me off the most and woke me up the most. Calling me out, lol. You were right though. It is my ego holding me back, but not the the cocky type of ego, the one that thinks everyone is looking at me to fail. Its just as bad as the other ego because it prevents me from doing the things that make me happy. But thats another story for another thread.

Kill i! Also for squats try taping yourself or have someone tape you. I wasn't sure about my form even when it felt right but when I got my cousin to tape me, it helped actually seeing myself and realizing ok I am going low enough and not rounding my back. Only problem I had was not standing completely upright at the end of reps and having the bar in a high bar position. Also had Noema check my form and was so relieved to hear it was right, besides the bar position. I'm now doing low bar squats at 205 lbs and I probably started at the bar or maybe a little more in June. Hoping I can hit 215 tomorrow!.

You just named off basically every source of protein I use besides eggs and egg whites so you should be good to go.

I use chicken the most because its the cheapest. But I eat either 2 cups low fat cottage cheese or 2 cups gy per day even though it gets expensive. For breakfast I have eggs or just 40g whey.

Ego definitely doesn't have to mean cocky. I truly believe confronting your worries in the gym can only help you grow as a person and rise above such insecurities. 2 years ago I'd leave the gym and return later if it was busy because I felt I was wasting equipment if big guys were there. Then I learned most were pretty nice guys who have been in my shoes and respect you just for showing up,

Personally I want to see Cooter on American Ninja Warrior!. Or maybe it's just because I've been watching it a bit more now after going to a parkour gym a few times that has Ninja Warrior stuff and me wanting to learn some parkour. I'm still deathly afraid of doing a back flip lol.

My friend is currently training for it and hell once I'm in great shape I'd love to try it. Am pretty luck that there's a nearby parkour gym run by a guy who competed on American Ninja Warior so once I'm ready I can train on the Warped Wall, salmon ladder, cliffhanger etc.

I don't even know why I began lifting. Maybe I was hoping for a change of lifestyle and put an end to smoking weed everyday and get wasted on weekends. Maybe I wanted to be stronger or look jacked, but now it's much different, I lift weights like it's second nature. Looking good and being strong are just an after effect of all the fun i've had throwing dumbbells and cast iron around.

I love canned tuna BTW. :D

You editted in above me and I missed this entirely. Spaghetti squash has a better texture, but th miracle noodles don't affect the "taste" the same way. I'd take the miracle noodles.

I just wanted to let you know from today's anecdotal testing. I was at a 55 for my blood glucose this morning, so I ate a cinnabun quest bar and 2 of the peanut butter cups. 2 hours lateR I am sitting at 109. Considering the carbs and my body turning some of the protein into sugar, this falls right in line with what I'd expect. No spikes for me. If In can answer anything else, don't hesitate.

Sorry I missed your first post my friend.

I appreciate the response, might have to look into those noodles lol

Also i'm glad to hear the bars don't mess with your glucose levels, I was just concerned about ya after reading those comments;)

Just had two 16oz chicken breasts and looked up how much protein is in them, 180-200g. I hit my protein macros today off two meals and I'm right at around 65 grams of carbs.

Romanian deads destroy my hammies.

If you think RDLs are bad, wait 'till you try Good Mornings.

I do them with half the weight I do RLDs with, and I'm 10x more sore :O

I think RDLs are a fantastic assistance exercise, but they didn't really help my squat which is what I was hoping they'd do. I think they are more of a Deadlift builder.

So I switched to GMs, since both Bill Starr and Wendler sing their praises as a squat booster. As many of you know, I'm the Worst Squatter Ever (TM) and I need all the help I can get!
