Official: Xbox One in only 13 markets in '13; Free game for delayed preorderers

I have a feeling this will go both ways. What was the last console that launched in all territories simultaneously?

Sony and MS should have similar numbers available at launch the allocations will be key.

someone will likely be left out at initial launch yes, but if they launch in october that's still a whole 2 more months of 2013 to release in other areas.

let's not forget that the vita launched in japan in december 2011 and had released in ALL regions by early march.
 
I thought MS would get rid of this country by country breakdown when they got rid of their DRM.

It really doesn't make sense to treat countries within the same region differently.

Is there still some form of DRM?

What are you even talking about?

They aren't doing this because they had supply but opted to focus on a couple of countries. They are doing this because they are short on units.

It means that yield problems are real, and they are going to lose a bunch of sales to Sony who will be able to build the kind of momentum that will relegate Xbox One to Tier 2 console for the rest of the generation.

There's nothing good about this news.

The free game is a nice gesture but I can't help but to feel that this might have been a poor decision. Between this and the rumoured late October launch for the Playstation 4 I can't imagine that Microsoft will walk out unscathed by this.

This assumes that Sony will have enough consoles to throw around the world to fulfill all demand. Both consoles will sell out wherever they are. It just depends where you want to get more of a bridgehead. MS looks to be saying we want more in our core markets. Why leave an allocation in a country where it will go to waste (Japan).

Releasing in November 2013 in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand.

Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland launches delayed to 2014.

Everyone else (Japan, Greece, Poland, Portugal, rest of Asia, Africa, etc.): why would you live there?
 
Microsoft secures Ultimate Team for FIFA14, yet fails to release its console in the large parts of FIFAs market. I wonder how EA will feel about that.

These markets happen to buy the most videogames, UK, NA, Germany, France etc. Its better to put huge focus on the UK instead of Belgium for example. One market is considerably bigger then the other.

If they released everywhere, they'd undercut themselves and end up running out of units way sooner.

I think that's due import taxes. Most of that's going to the Brazilian government.
 
You can wait up to half a year to pay 500 for a Xbox One with a free game you didn't choose or buy a PS4 and a game for the European equivalent of $460 plus tax sometime in 2013.

It isn't a hard choice for those wanting to go next gen quickly. And if you hate Kinect it is even easier..

I just want to hear from developers in these regions to get their take on the matter.

Yeah, considering that Xbox One Day 1 preorders are still readily available in Germany, I guess you could just import the console if you wanted to.

You seem to forget that Sony aims to ship 16 million consoles this year. Their commitment to a worldwide launch only adds to the certainty that Sony is having a much easier time producing units than MS.

So yeah, I have literally 0 reasons to even rationalize or spin in a positive way what MS is being forced to do.

They weren't going to release "everywhere" in the first place. This means smaller online community, less word of mouth, less sales, less everything. I bet they won't even be able to put more units on those markets than Sony.

Look, MS was forced to do this. They would rather be in Sony's position, don't fool yourself.
 
Fuck me Sweden... seriously, are Sony pulling the same shit? If not, they fucking won the sales in A LOT of countries.

EA doesn't need to be mad. MS is paying them already. MS is the one who should be mad if they pay EA a ton of money and can't secure extra market share via Fifa anyway.
