Official: Xbox One in only 13 markets in '13; Free game for delayed preorderers

Looks like MS was really surprised when Sony announced the Ps4 back in february, then they paniced and rushed.
Something like the XboxReveal and the 180 on nearly everything they told us at the reveal and now the delay... that doesn't happen if you are prepared, but apparantly MS wasn't prepared for a late 2013 launch.

So people here just assume that Sony will have ZERO problems launching their console worldwide? I'll be interested to read how the story gets spun when Sony announces that they won't be launching in all the major territories this year either.

Not saying you're wrong about what may or may not happen to Sony, but I'd be careful with the prognostications. I can't think of a recent time when someone said "Well if MS does it, Sony will too" where it actually worked out that way.

Of course. It has to be fair after all! If MS has problems, then Sony has to have problems too god dammit! If only we had rumors.... the pain would be much more bearable.

Is there any credibility to localization issues? With Kinect already functioning in these territories, what else is there to localize? Is it really that hard to port system menus to a different language?

If they're having localisation issues, then they're really, really far far behind the schedule.

I don't know how MS works, but most big multinationals can brute-force localisation matters in extremely short amount of time. All it needs is a ton of sleepless nights, which is common for huge launch events.

To not be able to even do that means that the delay is significant.

I imagine that Cboat is some kind of Galactus, type of entity, that goes around devouring worlds and leaking microsoft secrets in the process.

Define problems. They haven't even stated their plans yet, so they don't have anything to go back on, yet. I wouldn't at all be surprised if they focused on the territories MS is focusing on. They know they have the advantage in the territories MS backed out of and haven't even announced yet (Asia).

So I thought. That's why I guessed it was the least objectionable cover for the renege on territories.

Indeed. Every single time Microsoft has screwed up in the past with the Xbox One, there's always someone there to say, "Ha, and you think Sony won't follow suit?"

It gets annoying. As though every mess Microsoft creates is going to be replicated by their competitors.

so are Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland now tier 2 countries alongside japan or is japan now a tier 3 country?

This will only mean that, more than even now, Dota 2 will dominate the gaming scene in Scandinavia and the Benelux (especially after Alliance's win at the International).

Charging to play online. That's about it, though.

What a botched launch. Its like they suddenly realised this year they had a console they needed to release. Sony must be laughing their tits off. It must be a weekly "What have they done NOW?!" morale booster session by now.

I’ve also been thinking that, maybe, I’m over thinking this. Sure, Tier 2 sounds condescending. But let’s think about this for a second. In DBZ, sure Goku is Tier 1, but Vegeta is Tier 2. Who do most people feel is cooler between the two? Most people think it’s Vegeta. He’s got that royal blood, is a prince, marries the richest woman on the planet, and does whatever the hell he wants. Sure Goku is stronger, has more fun, and isn’t embarrassed by his rival to the point of having to admit his own inferiority. And sure Vegeta is a prince of an extinct race, shouts a lot, has a son who has a genetic deformity in the form of pink hair, and is essentially humiliated by everyone, including a blonde little girl who isn’t even human. But really, really, we all know how cool Vegeta was.

I feel we'll hear spin at some point along the lines of, "Xbox One will be available to over a BILLION people this year!" Which is strictly true, but, well, yeah...

Haven't they had greater availability on pre-orders in gamestop etc
They are also manufacturing PS4's in China and Japan.

Although they have stopped launch pre-orders in the UK.

I think he's referring to this

Does it really matter? The 360 sold poorly in scandinavia even though it was released earlier and was cheaper than the PS3. The same is true for most of Europe, except UK.

Xbox One would never be a winner in any other markets than US/UK. Sony tried hard to piss off European customers during the launch of PS3 and still they won. Sony wins by default in Europe.

MS: Sorry for the delay, here's your free copy of Kinect Sports Rivals!

Heads would explode.

Not sure how this hurts them that much. They have the same amount of units as before. They are just concentrated in the bigger markets.

1.) You're assuming that this isn't a supply contraint issue. If they don't have the units to be in all those countries, then they have less than they need. They may well be concentrated those units on bigger markets; but...

2.) They're effectively ceding those markets to Sony for many months. (Of course that's assuming a release Europe wide release in November or something near that.) That's going to harm them in those markets. They may not be the big ones, but Sony's world wide sales are part of their big strength. I guess if MS loses the US and UK it would be a huge step back, whereas if they don't gain ground in these other countries, they're going to be looking at something akin to the current status quo.

The only way I can see someone spinning this is positive is if they have a very large amount of stock, and they're just going to put it all in the biggest markets to effectively flood the market with supply when Sony's won't have the luxury to do that with a worldwide launch. As I said, they're still ceding other territories at that point, but maybe on the balance people would argue that doesn't matter. I'd be very surprised if this was the case though.

This may be just me, but if Sony said tomorrow that I won't get my PS4 this year, but when I do sometime in 2014, I'll get a game with it, I'd tell them to fuck off (by canceling my preorder and buying a WiiU or something).

Just sayin'.
Mhm, this is a seriously terrible move, I wasn't sure what to do before today but now I'm honestly considering preordering a PS4 just because I live in one of the affected countries.

Team #CBOAT, he basically called it, had many doubters, and was right again. Delayed!

There is no way to really spin this into good news. This is bad news and really stinks for the 7 or so countries that are now getting delayed

Online multiplayer requiring a paid subscription :P

They'll be throwing everything they have at these 13 markets. By doing this, they can create a precise marketing strategty for each region.

Whilst launching everywhere, they'd cut themselves short IMO.

I'd agree if this was Microsofts launch strategy from the begininning - but they changed it and they must have had a good reason to do so...

So nextgen in Benelux:
AC4 PS4 exclusive
Wd PS4 exclusive
FIFA PS4 exclusive
CoD PS4 exclusive
BF4 PS4 exclusive

Who exactly is going to wait for whenever XBone is gonna launch and why?

Im so dissapointed right now. I was really expecting the Xbox One in november or atleast in december, right in time for christmas.

Fuck

He's the same guy who gave the PS4 reveal a 6/10, meanwhile probably thought their own was 10/10 material. He's clueless.

No one. It's a weaker console with no clear benefits over its competition. MS really is doomed.

eh. This really does make sense. The impression was that they weren't going to be able to get as many units out as PS4 or at least not as many units they wanted. So, redirect assets to where you think you will sell the most and need to have a strong first showing.

The Netherlands is Tier 2 now? What about all those people who pre-ordered a Xbox one because of MS statement that Netherlands would be in the first tier for a November 2013 release? Its ridiculous.

Im hearing people are already cancelling their pre-order....because who knows when the Xbox will be available next year.
