I don't read reddit too often, but I thought this was pretty damn interesting. Posters share some insider info about their work and company practices. Some are humorous and a little mundane, but others are repulsive and a bit depressing.

Also, fuck American Apparel (like that needed to be said).

Here's a few interesting ones, and I'm not bolding anything, just read them:

I work in hotels. NEVER BOOK THROUGH A THIRD PARTY (Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline, Orbitz, etc.). Hotels overbook all the time, and your reservation is the first to go in a "sold out" situation. Third parties guarantee you a room, but not necessarily the room you booked or even a room at the hotel. We can "walk" you to another hotel that has vacancy. Third party requests are also not something we have to honor or even try to honor. Your best bet is calling the hotel directly and asking for availability/rates. Often times, if you find a "better rate" on a third party site, ask if the hotel can match that. Saves us and you money.

Texting service actually requires NO extra infrastructure on your phone or on the network. The size of the text message is limited by the amount of carrier signal that your phone sends out normally every few seconds to notify the tower where it is, what time it is, etc. so that the network can keep your call live.

That you pay extra money for texting is pure profit for the phone company. They have never added any bandwidth for texting, it's always been there as the normal maintenance of the network.

I worked for Hasbro for a while, specifically with GI Joe and Star Wars figurines. During my time there I learned that Hasbro does NOT keep an archive of past toys. No warehouse, no expanse of shelves and containers, nothing. What do they have? A tiny dingey basement where they keep all of the toys they buy on ebay when they need to reboot a series.

Yes, that's right, whenever you see a "Top 10 GI Joe Re-release!" or "Best of past Star Wars figures!" there's no magical place where they go to dust off the old master molds. Nope! They hit ebay and the GI Joe forums, buy up the old toys, re-sculpt, re-cast, repaint based on the old figures, and then re-release them.

I couldn't believe it when I found out.

I'm a celebrity event photographer in Hollywood. Most of the smaller award shows winners like the MTV VMAs, Teen Choice Awards, etc...already know they are going to win. This motivates the talent to come to the event. During the show they are backstage talking with friends and take a seat during a commercial break just before their award is announced. The few exceptions are the Oscars and Golden Globes where the audience is mostly celebrities.

This was my favorite because I was once a naive aspiring actress. I wound up a personal assistant to a d-list psychopath. Made connections, thought I might have a shot. As I made my way up, I realized that behind every door is a man who expects a BJ or worse. I had a horrible experience with a well-known director. When you say rape, fuck loads of rape, I believe it. I tell people all the time that Hollywood is one big dirty illusion. They don't want to believe the A-List stars had to do anything sexual to get where they are. The casting couch is alive and well. Thanks for posting this.

Big difference. In the U.S., if you tell a chick she has to give up the puss to get the part, after you bang her you actually have to give her the job. If you don't, she will tell everyone and ruin your reputation. In Mumbai, you bring in 15 chicks for screen tests, spend 6 months banging all of them, then tell them the project didn't get funded. Next time, they'll still bang you. If they told everyone, it would not ruin your reputation, your friends would ask for their phone numbers.

I worked as a software consultant for a couple years in the finance industry. As such, I worked on many trading floors. The shit that you see there will make you lose all hope in finance, the stock market, traders and humanity in general.

Try to think of the biggest douchiest guy you've ever met, then add a god complex to him and is purely motivated by money. That's what 99% of traders are like. They say a curse every other word, they don't have any manners, they will belittle anyone that isn't like them, they boast about every little accomplishment, they think that the rest of the world are just a bunch of lazy fucks (including the people that have money in the fund they're managing) and they think they are the center of the universe.

The reason for this? For one, the whole industry is like this and if you don't become like them, you will be chewed & spit out. Second, they become like this because of positive re-reinforcement for bad behavior. These banking companies are greedy and all they want is money (this coming from the top brass) and everyone is trying to get a piece. They will fuck your retirement savings over just so they can make a cool $1M or more profit on it, and nobody bats an eye that it's extremely immoral, heck, they congratulate and promote you instead.

But there was this one guy in particular that was essentially the devil's asshole. He had a massive corner office and made almost half a billion (yes, with a B) dollars of profit for this particular banking company. He was a shark that would kill your granny just to take her savings away, but he was untouchable because he made so much money. To the point that this cunt berry had a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against him every month by different female employees in the office. The company, not wanting to get scrutinized and bring legal papers into the matter, would settle out of court for a minimum of $50K and then told the ladies to find another job.

I'm not shitting you, this guy was getting positive reinforcement for harassing women like a drunk horny sailor and nobody said anything. It was the norm. The worst part? All the traders looked up at him like a fucking god, a hero.

Last thing I want is my money handled by these douche canoes. I quit soon after seeing this spectacle of human scum.

TLDR; Finance industry is full of douche canoes that manages your money.

Edit: Spelling, TLDR;

Video editor here for reality TV. It's fake for the most part. They usually do multiple takes of the "reality" scenes that are staged beforehand. The most recent egregious use of this is Duck Dynasty. They pass the show off as reality tv and they actually have table readings for that show before shoots. Not saying that reality TV isn't sometimes entertaining. I'm just saying that you shouldn't be fooled into thinking that this is actually reality and the camera just happened to be there when these people were doing what they normally do.

American Apparel
I worked at American Apparel for two years. During the time that I worked there, the company implemented a company-wide recruitment policy where any person applying for a position must be photographed (1 headshot, 1 body shot) The actual resumes were thrown in the garbage. These photos were then sent to a company email address where someone would either give a thumbs up or down to the photographs. Staff were encouraged to recruit instore and on the street and were given a $100 bonus for every person they got approved.

Before this was implemented, all existing staff were photographed (again, 1 headshot and 1 body shot) Anyone deemed to be physically unworthy was let go from the company. Of course this wasn't legal, however right before they started this process every employee had to sign a waiver form, that was pretty much a lot of legal gibberish, on the spot. I wanted to have a lawyer take a look at the form however I was told I had to sign it on the spot or I would be let go.

There was also a company intranet website which all employees where to check on a regular basis. This was Dov's main line of communication to all staff. The site would have pictures of girls from the stores where he would rip them apart for having too thin eyebrows, for having "ugly make-up" or bad tattoos and piercings. They were basically publicly shamed for not looking the way he wanted to. He would also post memos saying things like "HIRE MORE ASIANS"

Needless to say, I no longer work for the company and will never shop there again.

Well, most of the girls that I worked with were super young, I was the oldest in the store at 20. We even secretly employed one girl's little sister who was only 13. A lot of the time when the guys from head office would come in they would take pictures of the girls in the store. Some of the girls wanted extra attention so they would pose pretty raunchy for them, mostly they just side boob and stuff but sometimes it got kind of weird. Also, every city with an American Apparel also has a company hotel room. Personally, I never went with them, but when the head office guys came to town they would take a few girls from the store with them for the night. I heard stories about tons of weird crap going on those nights and I know for a fact many of those girls were under 18.

I had a HS friend that worked at an AA in NYC. To apply for the job she had to have her photos taken and after being on the job for a month she was asked to take more pictures. A few weeks later she was invited via email to a "company event" that was being held at a bar in the West Village. She replied that she was 17 and couldn't go to a bar. They followed up by inviting her to a hotel room party, instead. She didn't go. She was let go one pay cycle later.

She was a smoking hot blonde, btw.

The reality TV one is true of basically any "Viva La Bam" type show- it's a bunch of set up scenarios. The competition ones are usually legit, simply because they need to be, but they'll take massive liberties in the editing room.

Surprisingly, I've heard worse. Enough to fill a thread.

Yeah this is pretty well known stuff for AA. Shame their t shirts fit me like a dream because I kind of hate supporting the company.

Worked for an international Christian charity in a third-world country, and now I work for a Fortune 500 company.
Pretty much all that money raised goes to the upper management. The CEOs of charities live as lavishly and expensively as the CEOs of the stereotypically big evil greedy megacorporations we all love to hate.
Recently an article made the front page that pointed out dozens of charities where less than 5% of the money raised by your donations actually went to the cause they were claiming, in some cases it was even zero percent. And all legal.
Also, unlike the big greedy corporations, charities aren't scrutinized as thoroughly by regulations / oversight / governments / etc as exemplified by Bernie Madoff's whole thing.
Charities also have armies of naiive volunteers doing the real grunt work for next to free. At least in a big greedy corporation, you're usually getting paid for your work. Christian / religious charities are the worst at stuff like this, because they feed their volunteers the whole "we're doing this work for God, not for money" bullshit while their CEOs live just like the CEOs of those banks we all loathe.
Basically, don't just throw money at charities and be all happy that you're making the world a better place. Do a lot of research first.

Godfuckingdamn.

Knew this one.

storage wars is basically like that. they just plant one or two interesting items for them to find when searching through all that garbage.
Think Dave Hester said all of this and got the boot.
so yeah, most reality shows are staged, doesnt make them bad. Duck Dynasty is amazing

im also not surprised by the american appeal one, isnt that the same for Aberacombrie and fitch(spelled wrong)

Abercrombie is filth and his CEO a complete degenerate.

75% of people on twitter are fake. I used to work for a social media company, and spent all day creating and acting like people online to connect people to our clients and make them fans of their music/food/whatever. We also had a "blast" program where we could tweet stuff out from accounts to create trending topics. So most of that stuff is organized.

Interesting.

The AA story might have over exaggerated over stuff like "smoking hot blonde" but that story is most likely true. Hear the same type of shit about Abercromie and Fitch

Not surprised at all about the AA one. Not any of them actually. It kind of just reaffirms the worst people thought of every industry mentioned.

Funny, I always feel like their shirts are too long.

Their 100% cotton shirts don't fit me well but their 50/50 and, especially, their 50/25/25 shirts fit me outstanding. I'd be interested in other shirts that are a poly blend and have a slim profile because, like I said, I hate AA's company ethics.

Stories like these make me glad I don't buy any of those clothing brands like American Apparel or Abercrombie.

Fuck brands. I wear the cheapest, generic shit I can find.

The problem with some shitty generic brands is that they fit terribly.

Although Abercrombie is just expensive for the sake of expensive at least AA is made in America. I'm not sure where their source their fabrics from, though. I mean would it make you feel better to hear your generic no-name t shirt was made by an 8 year old getting paid 20¢/hr during a 12hr shift over someone with a rapist corporate HQ?

Which ones?

I can vouch for the three Hollywood-related ones in the OP. Although not all reality shows are like that.

can't say which ones for sure, since I don't have experience in all those different fields. however, when it comes to reddit: 1. no fact checking 2. people will say anything for karma, as if it actually matters. Also, many of their experiences may only apply to the specific location at which they work, and may not generalize to their industry as a whole.

This one makes me mad.

The suppliers of big pet store chains like Petsmart and Petco are horrid for the animals. They're nothing but breeding factories, churning out as many animals as possible with no thought to their health. A large majority of our animal shipments came in sick, dehydrated, or dead. Animals were often left in the back "sick room" with little if any veterinary care. We once had a greek tortoise with a respiratory infection languish for 6 MONTHS back there, barely eating anything at all before someone finally took her to the vet and had her put down. I adopted many animals during my 3 years there, including a cordon blue finch that had caught her leg in cage wiring, snapping in half at the ankle, and a gerbil that came in with no eyes and a horrible break in his leg. They would have otherwise sat in a small dark cage their whole lived never being offered up for sale.

It's not just cats and dogs you shouldnt buy from petstores. If you're looking for ANY pet, be it small animal, reptile, or bird. Please go to a respectable breeder, even a shelter. Don't support the giant corporations.

edit I need to clarify that I am NOT talking about dogs and cats. Both the stores in mention here have them for adoption, not sale. I'm also talking mostly about the suppliers of the animals here. Even if a particular store is doing the right thing with taking care of them, these animals still come from horrible places. The reptiles, birds, and small animals, come from suppliers where they are over-bred and over crowded. Little if any vet care is given. If an animal can no longer breed, they are left to die, or killed by the workers(undercover footage of these suppliers has shown workers stomping on bags of live hamsters). Unless you're looking for a fish, the best thing to do is find a respectable breeder or go to a shelter if you're in the market for a pet.

So in other words your original post was nothing but lies and hyperbole?

I have one.

Wendy's- The meat in your cup of chili? It was the hamburger patties from yesterday. You see, whenever hamburgers are made, they have "7 minutes" until we were no longer able to use it for your next burger. So they were put into a tray, and when that tray was full, it would go into a bag into the freezer. Brought out early the next day to be diced into your chili meat.

My thoughts exactly.

I always just remind myself that the sick shit happens to the girls in the stores and office building and not the people that actually make the shirts.

I now understand why so many celebs start their own charities and stuff instead of giving a lump sum to potential scammers.

are they even trying to pass reality tv as real anymore, if ever? the dialogue is pretty much always clearly scripted, and i don't think they try to hide it.

Cheap shit tends to be made in shitty conditions in foreign factories.

I'm ok with this.

Not really too surprised by these although for some reason I did find the hotel reservation one interesting. Stuff like the charity one and the pet supplier one steam me up, but I kind of knew about these already. This just confirms it.

It's reddit. Most of it made up or extremely hyperbolic
Some of the stuff mentioned on the Reddit is already known about like the charity stuff, pet suppliers, reality tv, texting, etc.

You can get brands that aren't like them. Your generic cheap shit is probably made by some indian kid for nothing so I wouldn't get too high horse about it.

That's not exactly a deep dark secret, or even that surprising. I'd rather that than the meat go to waste. Pretty sure that's what a lot of restaurants/diners do as well.
