Xbox One release EU delay explained - there are no manufacturing problems, insists MS

I don't know. I've personally checked first party demo stations, like the Knack ones, and the PS4s shown were empty plastic shells with a glowing led and the controller cable passing through the case going to an underlying, locked case. They even put a white cover in front on the rear connectors side to hide that there were no power/hdmi cables connected.

Hm ok. I just read on some site how there were real PS4 units. Have to look it up again I guess.

So not manufacturing problems, just rushed to market. Which one is worse at this point? Sounds like both.

?

that's what I'm trying to make fun of, they say localization problems is why Tier 2 countries exist, but at the same time they can't deliver units to Switzerland, which has the same official languages like 3 of their Tier 1 neighbors...

thats an example for "solve the problem just like this. there is none"
poland & co wont get their own language this easy. though they can buy one and switch to english.

The point is why not just release it switzerland than, seeing that language is not the problem?

Exactly. No we've come full circle and the message is: "We have some seroius manufacturing problems, that is why we only launch in so few countries..."

Then why not simply release in Switzerland if they speak the 'Tier 1' languages?

Stinks of horseshit

Annnnnnd we have a winner!

It's just bullshit, If it was truly localization they would have added switzerland to tier 1.

This didn't stop them from selling 360s without the official XBL support for 5 years this gen. They advertised 'online play' on the box even though it was a lie.

I don't see a problem with that if you are in one of the 13 countries where the console will launch. The hardware will be fine, and software-wise we will see a patchathon on all consoles. This has become a tradition.

Apart from the odd case of Switzerland, localization problems are quite probable since the task is non-trivial. What I don't get is why localization problems should prevent a console launch. A English/German/French/Spanish-only console is still better than no console during the holidays. Even I will run my console in English although it's not my native language.

But it's not just the straight out language it's the dialect too.
Take Belgium for example , a tiny country that is roughly split into 3 language speaking areas, but each area is speaking its own unique dialect of each language. That's a tricky thing with a human to deal with let alone a machhine.

The same thing will be a problem in the Uk where the 30+ accents and dialects will cause voice recognition a problem. You wait, there will be people complaining kinect doesn't understand them.

These problems aren't exclusive to Microsoft, this is the list of currently supported languages for Apple's Siri

United States (English, Spanish)
United Kingdom (English)
Australia (English)
France (French)
Germany (German)
Japan (Japanese)
Canada (English, Canadian French)
China (Mandarin)
Hong Kong (Cantonese)
Italy (Italian)
Korea (Korean)
Mexico (Spanish)
Spain (Spanish)
Switzerland (French, German, Italian)
Taiwan (Mandarin)

As you can see, the list of supported European countries is missing many of the same countries that MS isn't launching in

MS isn't going to say manufacturing problems even if that was the case. Not sure why anyone thinks otherwise.

I don't think it's really a big deal other then they said earlier that it was coming to 21 countries @ launch. That sucks for those that preordered (which would be zero based off of NeoGAF advanced metric analyst team). Did Sony give free game(s?) to everyone when they delayed the EU launch of the ps3

Sure, my point is that any version is better than no version. A message saying that a particular language will be supported in early 2014 should prevent any negative publicity and people would be happy to have a console at all.

It's the whole Kinect thing though, they don't want to launch the xbox into countries where Kinect is almost totally useless, that doesn't make sense. Especially when their message is that it's entirely integral to the experience.

I'd love to see their reason for Tier-3 Asia Pacific countries once XB1 is released in late 2014. (assumption)

Based on MS's track record in expanding their services/support/etc around the countries here, I have very little faith that they will actually have Kinect services localised to many of the core languages used around this region, much less the hundreds of dialect.

Heck, if it wasn't for Nokia's adoption of the WP platform, I don't think MS would had opened up the WP marketplace here even by today.

Guess you're right.

Read the rest of my posts maybe it would be clearer.

But on the Xbox 360 they didn't care it was a three-language country, they were more than happy just to show everything in French.

Someone should really make sure people just shut up at Microsoft. Come out with the good news when you have them , stop trying to spin the shitty news. Don't talk about them at all. It amazes me the damage Microsoft is doing to itself concerning the xbox one.

That's what I thought first as well but if you ignore the editors note he's actually just referring to any issues regarding the box and stating the final kit as proof that they have indeed a finished product.

It's right after the sentence where he talks about the volume issue though, seems to be connected.

its not like they'd build 20 million consoles in advance. production issues or not.
they build as many as they think that will be sold.

pre orders let them see how many they ll build in the 2nd step.

now you ve built 4 million in advance and have to sell them. which market would you prefer? the most important ones or those that never cared much about you.

it is worse to lose a possible customer in your market to a competitor than not to sell one in a market where you ve never succeeded.

/edit
of course it sucks when the demand is higher, than you got in stock. but the opposite is worse. if you just made 1 million more than the market demands, its already a hundred of million bucks in consoles on your shelf.

I don't think it's so much about the text language, but more about the voice recognition, which makes up a big part of using the Xbox One OS.

Too bad. I liked Penello. But that is just bullshit again. Again, why you can't release in Switzerland then? They speak German just fine.

and pointed to its use of near-final retail kits at Gamescom as proof that there are no supply problems.
What is this? That doesn't even make sense.

True, but I think they didnt even match their own forecast so they have to cut it down to those few countries to deliver something. Its not like the X1 caught fire or has a demand like PS4... the pre orders are pretty mediocre so it comes down to the manufacturing chain.

Does this mean that every european country where the Xbox One got delayed will have native language voice support for Kinect when it launches? Otherwise, i dont quite understand what the delay is about.

Come on guys, do you not realise how much time it takes to translate "Kinect, order two bottles of Lynx/Axe body spray" into every language? Something's got to give.

That's true. At GamesCom every PS4 demo station was showing fake units, while a cabinet under them contained the real devices. I presume PS4 devkits. Every Xbox One shown, instead, was the real device attached to monitor and controller.
I played forza 5 at gamescom. The controller was plugged into the xbox one, but the cables coming from the back of the console went into a big white box that was connected to the tv through a pipe. To this moment I dont know wether I played forza on final xbox one hardware or a dev kit.

So a feature that a large percentage of customers will never bother using is what's holding up the console. Got it.

I have an iPhone 5 and I can't even be bothered to use Siri, and I've heard many other iPhone 5 users say the same thing.

If they'd actually show us the improved voice interpenetration then we could make determinations as to their truthfulness.

PR Nonsense.

I remember that the german voice commands werent implemented in the 360 as kinect launched. But instead of let the customers use the english voice commands (e.g. by changing your language to english on the console) they blocked all english voice commands if your account isnt a xbl-us/uk account... it took about a year until the voice commands for the german dashboard were implemented -.-

As long as kinect 2 does not think the sound of the game you're playing are voice commands as kinect 1 does, i will unplug it nevertheless. In Anniversary kinect always brighten up the game screen and starts throwing grenades by the own sound of the game. Even worse, in SC:Blacklist the Kinect always forces Sam to say something that the enemies will be attracted -.-

so no ip locked content ? i can definitely download dead rising, gears of war mappacks or ninja gaiden 2 from germany ?

hope this is true
Seems like bullshit. Different countries have different laws for the content available, different licensing and distribution deals and so fourth. Doesn't seem like a legit service like live can offer content from one region in another without restriction.

So from zero to zero?

The guy is a corporate tool and nothing more. He is the Amirm (see HD DVD) of this console war, sent by MS to spin on forums and parrot the company line.

Damn. Did he kill your dog and steal your girlfriend in the same day? Why the hate for the guy?

He has been pretty straight forward and has written very lengthy posts on this forum which is an uphill battle for him already. I think most people appreciate him being here.

Would be nice to see.

Personally, I would more likely believe that the localisation problems they're having have to do with making Kinect's always on stuff legal in other countries. I know you can turn it off but a software switch might not be enough under some laws and I assume it comes turned on by default.

Q. Why the delay?
A. We have to localize kenict voice to different regions

Q. No manufactureing problems?
A. No.

Q. Thanks, we appreciate you taking the time but I'll just choose to believe what I want and spread XBone manufacturing yield problem seed all over the internets.

Just like most people on AVS appreciated Amirm feeding them bullshit day after day during the HD format war. Enthusiast groups like to be courted and MS management know this, so they send out their spokespeople to enthusiast forums to engage with them over and above what other companies do (as you mention, long posts rather than the usual one word answers we normally get from insiders or company reps).

It's something they did during the HD DVD vs Blu-ray format war, and now they are using the same tactics for the 8th console war, see this guy on GAF, that "confirmed developer" on /r/gaming and pretty much everyone on Bish's list.

His posts come across as straighforward, sure, but they are just rehashed company lines spoken more forthrightly without the sugar coating that we see in official PR.

The one thing I will give him is that so far he hasn't gone down to the Amirm levels and openly disparaged or denigrated the competitor or competing products, so that's at least something. Otherwise, to me, his words are poison mixed with enough sugar so people drink up.
