Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

In Soviet Nintendo we save cost by putting no hinge in 2DS in so that we can afford to put a a dual 3D camera to a 2D device so you can take 3D pics you can't view

PLEASE UNDERSTAND

Ugh, that seems so stupid. Maybe there's software that requires the two cameras, like games built on AR?

Worst console design ever, it looks like a toy with its ridiculous screens

Job done. It is a toy and Nintendo will market it as such.

Kids give not a single fuck if a device folds or not.
Young children are not supposed to play with 3D anyway.

This will sell a stupid amount.
After the price drop. $99

Funny story, last night on the toilet I was wondering what happened to that old rumor that a 2D revision of the 3DS would come out, and look what I was greeted with upon waking up.

I think Nintendo has blundered on many, many things the past few years but this is not one of them.

This seems aimed more at children with the low price and tablet form factor. They've certainly lost much of this demographic to Apple.

Still waiting for a proper account system for purchases before I buy a 3DS myself though.

Yeah, seconded (or thirded) to the people saying this is basically a Nintendo "tablet". If this is true then there's actually some genius to this move. Especially since that's their main competition.

I think the hardest part is going to be branding. DS2 always made more sense than 3DS in terms of explaining that this was a new DS. So what now? Is the 2DS going to become the main name for the platform and there will be labeling on the box saying, "also supports 3DS". Or "supports 3DS with 3D features"?

I think this is a typical canny Nintendo move that will be laughed at until they tens of millions of these. However, also in typical Nintendo fashion the messaging will be confusing as hell.

And I thought Nintendo had reached the climax in brand confusion with Wii and WiiU..
DS /3DS/2DS.. Genius!..

Next Year , the WiiZ.

I am still reeling from wats (2DS is basically a double negative brand and I can't even), but real talk: how can ANYONE be surprised by the lack of a second stick. "We are releasing a cheap toned-down 2D entry level version of the 3DS. Also, we are adding another stick to it!"

Is there not an OBVIOUS dissonance between these items? Ya'll are fuckin nuts. The second stick is not happening, ever, but is MOST OF ALL not happening on a device like this.

It looks ugly and stupid, but I guess I can understand why they're releasing it:

-Lots of people saying they don't care about 3D, that bubble exploded anyway (I'm not one of them, I love my regular 3DS with the switch at full power)

-The design screams "Baby's first tablet". Kids sure like their tablets with their shitty freemium games these days, can't be helped.

-Cheap Pokemon player.

Ugly at first but with the gifs it is now growing on me. The 3DS is too big for any pocket so it always gets in a bag anyway, if the 2DS is thinner and the porch comes with the system this may be even more portable. i am serious.

This is what IGN said in their reveal article (which is probably sourced from PR), so yeah. It's likely just to keep AR games functioning.

...hate me...
Well, the entire point of this thing seems to be to appeal to parents scared away by those "3D mode may be dangerous for kids under 7" stickers. A system that becomes a very effective screen protector while not in use was an appealing feature for a kids' system. If you're gonna make a system that's clearly playing directly to parents' concerns, why take away a feature that they liked?
Well we disagree on the point of this thing. For me the point is clearly the price tag.

So you get a no frills 3DS without the unnecessary stuff for the gaming purposes of it.

Is Nintendo 2DS the result of Nintendo losing the lawsuit over the 3D screen?
A way to reduce royalties they may have been required to pay on future sales?

Could be a hit. Price point is decent, 3d is unnecessary. Only thing is the questionable look, but hell, might be comfortable as hell. I'll be sticking with my XL, but I can see the appeal of this.

I think Nintendo should throw in a bunch of those disposable DSi apps they made with this console.

Give the kids stuff to play around with.

Any chance it may have higher quality screens? With both my 3DS and XL, one was tinted red and the other blue. That's not a feature, right?

Can someone try explain why they would abandon the clamshell design, I can't wrap my head around it. Add a hinge and that thing fits in your pocket no problem. Why

I agree stump, but in going with the mindset of recapturing an audience conditioned to tablet form factors, wouldn't it have been wise to join the displays together and have a row of blank pixels act as a seperator? Yeah the ratios of both screens are different, but I feel like this idea could have been executed a little more elegantly.

Thoughts?

that could work but then you would have to pay for a full screen digitiser even though you will only use the bottom half of the screen. costs will be too much.

maybe the next handheld will be a tablet format single screen but with two sections and still fold in half in a clamshell somehow.

Why complain about a product not aimed at you?

The question raised is why is Nintendo doing this, the answer to this question is in my post.

You realize they could have made a 2DS device that was a product aimed at -everyone- right?

The appeal of the DS is that it was a system aimed at everybody from children to grandparents. The 2DS is so far removed from that, its totally fair to question whether its a smart move or not.

Let it just sink in for a moment:

MONO SPEAKER.

What the fuck. 90% of the time I play my handhelds I don't use headphones, now it's not really going to be an option. Speakers too expensive?

Oh you know what that does actually look really comfy. It looks solid when held just not very good in promo shots.

It's just so hilariously un-portable. You can't just throw this in a bag without worrying about the unit getting damaged, maybe a clasp on cover would have been good?
The original Gameboy wasn't very portable either but people still found a way to bring it everywhere.

If a kid wants to play these games bad enough they'll figure it out.

I think this is one of Nintendo's best moves in ages. 3D has always been the main feature that's holding the 3DS back to sell even better due to how expensive it is to manufacture and how unappealing it is as a feature for people.

I expect this model of the 2DS will explode the 3DS in sales worldwide and help it reach DS numbers handily.

At least someone gets it.

I've made a dozen posts this year saying The biggest long term threat to the traditional gaming industry is young children entering the gaming ecosystem at free-.99$ games, and growing up with this being their norm. It's very difficult to up-convert behavior to $40 handhelds and later $60 box console when your gaming idols are birds and pigs for a dollar and not Mario and Pokemon for $30+.

This is an attempt by Nintendo to emulate the appeal of why those devices are popular, as they grow their eshop offering as well, to lead people up the purchase funnel (and eventually MS and Sony leverage this cultivated gamer with their halos and GoWs as the player base ages. Everyone gets a piece, at least that's the intent)
It took me a few minutes but after i saw the video it clicked, and it changed my mind on the design,i think it looks pretty good. But i think the price is still to high $99 would be perfect.

Gee I wonder who this is aimed at.

Doesn't even need another price drop, with Pokemon releasing the same month, this will most likely sell very well.

Why? I thought the 3DS was doing alright and who the hell is gonna buy this thing? They should've design a new 3DS with a second stick, I'm sure a lot of folks here would've upgraded.
It will bomb. Panic Nintendo is losing it.

I can see this working for a certain demographic, but the 2DS name is going to cause a lot of confusion. Again.
