Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

If they'd made it just one big touch screen, they could still support all the 3DS-games but also do so much more! Miiverse, multimedia functions, not being fugly and perhaps even supporting something like Google Play

Missed opportunity right there. This is the 3DS's "Wii Mini"

That is the most bizarre looking thing I've ever seen. It just looks so weird... I don't even know how to respond. When is Nintendo going to stop releasing variations of the 3DS, and release an revision that replaces the original? I mean, the styling of this... uh.. thing matches the XL. The OG 3DS doesn't match either of them- it looks kinds out of place.

Also, wow, I can't believe those rumors from a few years ago were actually kind of true.

Ok, if people are saying this is designed for <7 year olds. Have you looked at kids hands lately?

How is that ergonomically designed for kids?

My nieces have trouble playing on the regular 3ds since they can't even hold it normally and reach all the buttons.

As mentioned, should have been one big ( touch ) screen. Doesn't hinder 3DS compatibility ( per se ), but introduces a world of potential.

Gonna say this right because apparently it is even going over GAF's head.

THIS SYSTEM IS DESIGNED FOR 6 AND YOUNGER, THAT'S WHY THE DEVICE IS BUILT LIKE THAT. IT'S A VERY SMART MOVE BECAUSE IT IS LAUNCHING WITH POKÉMON X & Y.

Typing in caps doesn't make your point more valid.

Show me a 5 year old with hands that are large enough to comfortably use that thing.

I can't help but love the idea of keeping the 3D camera array on the back of the 2DS

Yes, I do know why they do this, but still, this is hilariously awkward.

As a senior in college for Journalism, here's my take on it:

I am not a big fan of Nintendo but I like the design because it takes me back to this;

Hmm .. yeah.

Doesn't change the fact that it's still ugly as hell.

I doubt a six year old kid will care about the design.

It made my post noticeable though didn't it?

Also we can't say whether it's comfortable or not for kids, none of us have used one.

Kids love 3D for god's sake, they will want the 3D console for sure, a 2D version makes more sense for adults, like here on Gaf, who don't give a shit about 3D, but that fisher price design is just terrible, I don't think many 3D haters will buy that thing. This is a terrible idea.

The point is to be cheaper which gets parents on board. You've always been able to turn 3D off.

A device marketed towards kids also encouraging the use of headphones/earbuds, which break all the time.

Because the crowd that can't afford a 3DS with their allowance money REALLY cares about that stereo. Even premium iPad owners don't.

This is what happens when you merge the teams? What the fuck. What are they doing???

I could go for a Wii U gamepad that has the 2DS hardware shoved in it :p

I bet you could you fit the combined resolution of the two 3DS screens on a gamepad. Put in a nice switch to go from 3DS mode to Wii U mode and I'm in. The gamepad is certainly light enough to carry 3DS hardware inside without a problem

Once again NA gets the ugly red and blue colors while EU gets white!

At least it's still both ugly! :p

But I'd actually get one. As long as screen size is same as the xl. Why not?

I have been thinking for a long time now about a 3ds model that doesn't support 3d in favor of a lower price and maybe better battery life, but not like this... Why was the clam shell design abandoned?

Also, why the hell are the shoulder buttons so high up. If you're going to make your handheld huge, might as well give it good ergonomics.

What is up with Nintendo? Ever since the ugly ass Wii that got released in Canada , they forgot how to make good redesigns.

Imagine the confusion when little jimmy gets a 2DS for his fifth birthday and then him and his mother go to toys r us, but cannot find a single 2DS game anywhere!!!

But seriously, this isn't such a bad idea. I had a game boy original for my fifth birthday and the only reason it survived each day was due to the fact it was built like a fucking brick. If I had a 3DS at that point, it would have died a horrible death.

I wouldnt ever buy my young kid a 3DS. A 2DS though? Yep.

OKAY THANK YOU

Interesting move, and same date as Pokemons release....

My only concern is that the abxy buttons appear to be slightly high when compared to the dpad and analog...

Also it appears that there will be quite a bit of the system hanging below where you would be holding it...

Hard to judge how that would feel without actually holding it..

Looks like a great product.

It's a clear attempt to head off a worrying trend--younger and younger kids wanting tablets and their parents obliging, combined with cheaper and cheaper quality tablets like the Nexus 7 and iPad Mini. There are 3 year olds who are playing iPad games right now. I know this is shocking for people who are 18-22 but when your friends start having kids, it's amazing. The kids are illiterate but figure out how to unlock it, launch the games they want, and play them. And sometimes even purchase.

This is about recapturing those kids. And also their parents--although parents are worried about kids breaking or scratching, that worry evaporates a little more with each passing month that tablets become more ubiquitous and accepted. This is Nintendo adopting more of the tablet form factor and lowering the cost of entry, and since young kids aren't supposed to use the 3D anyway no harm no foul (doesn't hurt that it's not a selling point).

They still face extreme barriers in terms of software pricing and the way the app market has disrupted it, as well as software variety issues... and I'd also add that even a kid can figure out that two cheap screens and a stylus ain't the same as one beautiful continuous screen with finger power, but I think it's a good move by Nintendo.

I expected to be quoted for crow or posterity after the reaction "what an ugly pile of shit" crowd calms down a little

I agree. I, along with many others, may be unimpressed by the 2DS but goddammit Nintendo is definitely going to make a shit load of money in the coming months. They will definitely hit their profit forecast with the killer combo of a mass-market priced 2DS and Pokemon combo alone. Good business move honestly.

After all those comments of consoles looking like a Fisher Price toy this one actually looks like a Fisher Price toy.

I've been meaning to 'upgrade' my original 3DS and honestly if this is comfortable i'll probably buy it, as i NEVER use 3D.

just because it's for kids doesn't mean we can't point out how crappy it is. Mono speakers and poor battery life isn't okay because it's supposed to be crappy on purpose.
