you screen would turn on for notifications when in sleep mode?

Mine doesn't. You know you can choose what happens for notifications in the settings right? I just have the blue ps button flash or something.

It was a thing that started with 2.60 update. It wasn't supposed to happen.

B/c I lay in bed playing until the point that my eyes are almost melted, then I put the Vita on the surface behind me and go right to sleep lol

It's not a huge issue, but it is another one of the strange little things I hope they fix.

Put it with screen pointing down ;)

Apart from being 2d indie artistic platformer with twist number 2131377323721147914 this generation ?
It's a very high quality game with shittons of replay value. There's no "artistic" platformer stigma with Spelunky, it's pure platforming. Hard-ass platforming at that.

This insane deal on a Vita appeared in the Cheap Arse Gamer thread, I'm reposting it here because there might be UK people who are interested (or know people who would be interested) that do not keep their eyes on that thread:

PS Vita + FIfa 13 + 10 Game Mega Pack + 8GB MEM CARD + 30 Day PS+
£149.99 (Shopto via Play.com)

It seems to be UK only (not available for mainland Europe), otherwise I'd probably have jumped on a second Vita to lend to friends in order to sell them on the platform.

This should have it's own thread.

It's also available at the same price with Soul Sacrifice instead of the mega pack: http://www.play.com/stores/ShopTo/listing/850823262

There was an update overnight (2.61), hope it fixes that stupid issue about constantly waking up from sleep.

EDIT: Apparently it's just an patch for a hack exploit.

Every time I skim through posts and see people mention Shinovi, I always get a little excited until I realize I misread it as Shinobi.

D;

On a more serious note, I think that regardless of how well or bad the Vita is doing now, the real tell of it is coming soon. It just got a price drop, both for systems and memory cards, and the upcoming interactivity with the PS4 will be a large push for it. This holiday season, it may just turn some heads with how much it sells.

Funny that most of the games I listed were announced after them.
Killzone and CoD were both announced at the NGP reveal. And CoD was definitely another game that shouldn't have been revealed when it did, even if what went down ultimately had more to do with Activision needing fulfill its contract to provide a product for Sony to advertise during the planned holiday ad campaign.

Sounds like you've never played the game.

I don't really get the 3DS argument either.

I don't care about platformers. I might find one of them enjoyable from time to time. So I feel 0 need to buy Spelunky especially with how overpriced it it.

And if i cared about platformers I'd have bough Nintendo handheld since they are masters of that genre.

When vitabros say they aren't into Spelunky or it's "not for them", what is it that they don't agree with?

I'm trying to gain some perspective.

for me something just didnt click. i think it has to do with the gameplay. the mechanics felt good though. i really liked the ledge holding, and run jump, controls were tight. i think i like a more linear platformer. i'm not a fan of points either in platformers, so in the end i saw no reason to bomb the ground for the gold nuggets, rescue the gold head, or the girl. ( the gold head and girl arent required to exit right? regardless it just felt boring to me backtracking around and carrying, etc) - I just wanted the exit. Just didn't seem like there was a right way to do things, I would just bomb the ground - that was the most fun for me. i wanted more direction i guess? levels kinda felt "openworldy", which i didn't enjoy in this platformer... i felt like i was just wandering till i stumbled upon an exit. and since im not into points the challenges of tricky jumps etc of getting past some spikes for that one gold bar, was just ignored.

i could try to elaborate more if you want - can't think about my experience more atm as i'm at work.

maybe i played it and wasnt in the mood for at the time - so i'm writing it off. I do that sometimes with games, esp ones people rave over.. happened with infamous, asscred2, mario galaxy 2, and rayman origins + journey ( though those i am 100% giving another chance)... most i attribute me not liking them because i wasn't in the mood for that genre or wanting to game at the time.

... Nintendo handheld since they are masters of that genre.

That's disputable/debatable.

If there wasn't a "right" way, there wouldn't be a trophy for beating the game in under 8 minutes. :p
Granted, there is no "one optimal path" because it's randomized... but there's still reasons for everything.
Since money can buy things in shops, it's not just a score mechanic.
And the golden idol/girl serve a hell of a lot more purpose than you seem to have discovered...

They'll release multiplatform (PS3/Vita or PS4/Vita) games at best,I think if Sony had a big title to announce they would have done so at Gamescom or before that.Soul Sacrifice,Killzone,COD and Tearaway were announced well before their release.
I doubt the two teams are big enough to release PS4 games, especially Bend. Bend was also specifically hiring Vita programmers so I'd say a Vita game could come out from them

i mean of course theres reasons for all of it. i was just saying thats why i didn't love it. i know its randomized, hence why i said i like something more linear. I never got to the shop/buying part so i didn't know theres that aspect. and please do tell what hte idol and girl serve, because i asked in my response what they did or if they were purely for score or they were needed to finish a level.

someone asked for my opinion you don't have to defend the game and justify every reason it didn't click for me. i know i'm in the minority though, i said that in my initial post.

to build upon what corrosive said...

there isn't a correct way of doing things, so much as collecting all the gold you can using the smallest amount of resources possible within the allotted 2:30 before death shows up.

The exit is always at the bottom of the level but which side it's on is random.

Idols are used for money, plain and simple.

Girls give you hearts, or can be sac'd for items that yield more hearts. They also make a very nice projectile weapon.

absolutely nothing wrong with your assessment of the game.

the item buying is a pretty big aspect of the game, at least until you get to 3-1 and onward.

jetpack + shotgun = pure bliss

good to know - see i didn't know i had only 2:30 to finish the level... theres incentive. or that the exit is always on the bottom of the level.

i'd be willing to give it another go. like i said the mechanics are great, i just felt lost and that it was more of a highscore platformer.

thanks for the info. may owe the game a little more of my time.

had a terrible experience with the shotgun the first time but it made me LOL hard.
I had just bought it and a bat came my way so i jump shoot on the face and the recoil makes me fall on spikes

Oh, I wasn't trying to be... belligerent or anything...
I was just trying to be generalized and let someone else expand on it or let you ask if you had more interest.

There are a bunch of shops and items to buy -- shotguns, freeze guns, web guns, spike boots, spring boots, bombs, ropes, climbing gloves, paste, etc. My score ends up low a lot of times because I buy so much stuff. :)

If you rescue the girl (take her to the exit), you get a kiss in between levels which is basically a 1-up. If you sacrifice the girl, you'll get bonuses, like the cape or more (I think the 3rd girl you sacrifice will give you 8 1-ups). Sacrificing the golden idol will do something too, but I'm not as well versed as some of the other Spelunky pros in here, so I can't say for sure.

You don't *need* any of this to specifically finish a level. But these things allow you to get through easier and navigate without losing "lives". And furthermore, if you make it far enough, you'll find that you can get stuck and get game over if you don't budget your bombs/ropes/items properly. So they do serve some purpose.

The girls are amazing shields from the arrow traps too!
I'm not quite sure what the deal is with the golden idol, but when you sacrifice it, Kali is very pleased.
Plus you can use them in the mines, at least, to trigger the rolling ball of death trap and strategically clear some area without bombs (beware if it goes near a shop though!!)

score really only matters in the first few levels if you want to make sure you can purchase certain items if they are available

COUGHjetpackCOUGH

or once you get better you just steal shit

high score only matters if you can consistently get far enough in the game and beat it. i've only beaten olmec twice so high score is only now becoming a factor in my decision tree.

wait till you get to shoot the plasma gun

kali works on a point system. i'm not sure what each type of person is worth but the damsel is worth the most. 2 sacs and you get the chalice (absolutely amazing item)

i know the next time you please her you do get 8 hearts, but its a lot of sacs

if the girl is alive, she only gets 3 hearts. a shot from an arrow trap takes 2 hearts. something to keep in mind.

when you sac a gold idol the golden monkey appears. he poops gold

be careful grabbing the idol. besides the ball and pissing off the shop keeper, it can also squash the treasure chest and the key. that will drastically reduce the top end of your run, depending on how long your normal runs last.

each world has a different draw back from grabbing the idol. grabbing it in the temple is extremely scary lol

I don't think Nintendo has made a game as good as rayman origins in basically a decade let alone a platformer. The only exception may be fire emblem 3ds, but I'm a sucker for rpgs

I really regret buying spelunky, I love the idea but I fucking hate this game. 12$ for about 40 minutes of bummer before I deleted it.

Spelunky is an evolution of platformers in particular and exemplifies the randomization element that is revolutionizing game design in general.

Meanwhile, Nintendo does the same shit over and over and over. It's good, to be quite sure, but it is the same thing as the last thing. Again and again. And again.

Haven't played Rayman so I can't comment there.

My point being that Sony usually announces its big games around a year from release.

cool - thanks guys. you've convinced me to push through the initial leves and give it another go.

jet packs?! steal shit?! now we're talking! haha

I just managed to have like 26,000 in world 1-1.
I bought a jetpack and some bombs.
Doing this has helped me finally unlock the shortcut to world 4-1 (screw you, key).
I'm now on 4-1 and might have a glimmer of hope of beating the game...

And as I say this, I stupidly walk into a double arrow trap and then jet pack into a thwomp trap. Fuck me.

is there any way to spot traps?

im typically a hoarder when it comes to items in games... is it better to save or to be more frivolous with items like rope and bombs?

If you've amassed enough bombs up until that point, just blast them. Realistically, you just fake them out like the spike traps of the jungle and move on.

I unlock the short cuts but never use them, aside from the jungle short cut to unlock secret characters

you pretty much answered you own question lol

it really comes down to your available resources. is it worth going down to 2 bombs just to grab 3-4k? it might not be unless the shopkeeper has a pack of 12 bombs and you need to get the extra loot to re-up?

i will say bombs are way more useful than ropes, unless you run out.

basically if you get the jetpack, you'll never need another rope

if you think spelunky is "overpriced" you need to consider a career change

and have more of an appreciation for the labor/love/hardwork/art/dedication that go into making games. ;)

especially indies who dont have the kind of backing a large dev studio would. its a shame how mobile prices and the speed at which AAA games fall in price have affected the general thinking of worth/value of gaming. :/

that said i do have a sweet spot for prices depending on product quality and my level of interest in the game.

It is in Australia compared to the price on Steam. $15 on Steam, $22 on PSN. No reason for that kind of disparity.

thats just plain unfair. :( ... must cost a lot to ship overseas...dat island tax!

My Vita shipped from Amazon.co.uk today (finally!).

Question regarding PSN+ and downloading stuff...

Is PSN region locked?
I'm from Croatia, but I have a UK PSN account since before there was an option to open a Croatian account and I don't plan to abandon it.
If I upgrade to PSN+, would I be able to normally download games without the need for a VPN (for example, I need to use VPN on most Xbox Live Games on Demand games)?
Not interested in video, music and other probably-region-locked-content-due-to-licensing-and-stuff...

Thanks!

There is no region locking on the PSN. You are only limited by your ability to top up your PSN wallet with the currency of the store you're using.
