iOS Gaming September 2013: Game Center looks like a bag of Skittles now

Looks like a flood of games to be ready for all the new iPhones that come out soon. I think there's always an app sales spike with the new device releases.

I've enjoyed Giant Boulder of Death as well. The freemium shenanigans are no worse than say Temple Run. The game's a fun diversion even if the high score table is meaningless. I do like how completing missions unlocks more shit to smash in the game.

Hmm, I wasn't too interested in COD, but I wonder if that TBS Arma game is any good. ...I already have to many games I don't play.

Guys, should I play Plants vs Zombies or just skip to the sequel? Which is better and why?

The original is currently better because it includes a whole lot more content such as mini-games and is a "complete package".

I think the sequel is very good, but it feels like it is 2 or 3 major content patches away from being completed.

It's not like there is a coherent story. if you haven't paid for the original yet, you could play the sequel to see if you like the type of gameplay.

Greetings iOS gaf its been a while!

I've been a bit out of the loop, but anyone have any suggestions for online or local co-op games that would be fun to play with my gf? Any genres welcome

Yeah was reading that in the OT. Really caught my eye as a huge Terraria fan. I think im going to check it out

I can wholeheartedly recommend it - it's really fun in multiplayer.

I just unlocked the new world and I am addicted to the game. It's not focused on a single world but to explore each and unlock new ones - so it doesn't feel that pointless. Certain items are only available in certain worlds and even though you can bring them over from one to another it encourages doing a bit of everything.

I forgot to praise the music - it's really really good though very sparse and offered in short bursts. It's cool, chiptuney ambient you hear exploring the dungeons. At parts it even reminds me excellent 'Swisher' album by Blondes (check it out!) I just wish these bits were longer and that there was more music, unless its divided into different worlds.

God, someone, jump on a Junk Jack X love bandwagon with me.

I almost cracked and got Terraria on iPhone but I guess I will stick to the PC version

What's a good crafting guide to Terraria? I saw a nice looking .99 app but if there's a better webpage I'll check that out.

I like it a lot more than minecraft.

I enjoyed Terraria a lot on PC and I had ~$4.50 left in my account from a gift card, so I grabbed it as a somewhat impulse purchase. As people have said, probably controls better on the iPad, but it's still pretty decent on my iPhone 5.

Haven't really been excited about an iOS game in a long time, but I picture it being the perfect thing when I'm out and about and am tired of browsing or checking twitter or whatever.

I really hope that's true! Rayman Jungle Run is one of my favorite iOS game evaaar!

Star Wars: Force collection. Any good? The screenshots don't look promising.
I've poked around in it. It's pretty standard fair, like Transformers or Marvel. Doubt it will hold my interest much longer than those. Don't let that stop you from trying it though, might be a good time killer

It ran horrible on my iPad 3, and kept sending me back to the main menu. Already deleted.

I was supposed to work on my portfolio site today and finish some overdue portraits.

Instead I've used diplomacy and technology to slowly conquer the galaxy.

Thanks, Starbase Orion.

This game completely legitimizes gaming on ios for me. No cooldown timers with IAP, great optional tutorial that perfectly balances handholding with gentle self exploration, no IAP, smooth graphics and clean interface, no IAP, good balance of difficulty, smart AI, and no IAP. Did I mention there's no IAP?

Absolutely stellar dev support continues to make the game better and at just one day playing, the game design seems to have improved on master of orion in almost every way (especially through the interface).

I'm swooning over this game. I've never felt so good about spending $8

Wordium

My company released this recently (I didn't personally work on it though), if any of you happen to be curious about another word game. I don't want to hype it too much or anything since I'm obviously biased, but feel free to check it out, it's a free download :P

Call of Duty Strike Team looks and plays considerably worse than Modern Combat 3 (not 4, 3). Very disappointing.

The birds eye view is cool though.

Had no idea an ARMA game was out.

£2.99 is a great price.

I've played a couple of levels and it's not bad at all. It's very X-com in how it controls and I'd say so far it's both a little smoother and a little clunkier. There seems to be a leveling up system for your dudes and an armoury system but I don't know how deep it goes yet. The interface is a little clunky at times but it's very playable and certainly fills a gap left by finishing X-Com recently.

Uggggh, this game. Can't stop playing it. I love it so much I'm playing it on both my iPad and iPhone (further along on the iPad.) iCloud support would be nice, but I kind of like having to replay everything on my iPhone :3 That said, some of the holes are horseshit, but the game seems to like to dole out an impossible hand every once in a while. Just restart the course a couple of times and it'll throw you a bone.

Yah no shit a big f you to whoever first posted that this was a decent game...not getting back the last 4-5 hours of my life...lol

I guess the App Store editors were caught off guard just as we were by the torrent of surprise releases

Probably not

They usually ask for feature assets from devs in the running about a week out, so they seemingly aren't filtering down the titles at the last minute, though they appear to make the final choice at the last minute.

There were a lot of problems with the iTunes Connect backend yesterday, so I assume they were struggling with or changing something.

Free remake of Ultima 4.

Wait what? It is official? How the fuck did EA let this happen with no IAP? 130 odd MB and I can't see it working, but I'll give it a go. It includes a digital manual, walkthrough and player guide!

Ultima 6 is my all time favourite game with 7 not far behind so this could darn well be great.

----

As an updated, here is a mini-review:

Unfortunately my attention didn't last long. The menu screen is cheap and nasty. Far too cheap and far too nasty. It also includes a full page ad and link for the "other" EA ultima 4 which will not get mentioned by me. When the menu finally works you discover the walkthrough is a gamefaqs text file. The manual? Well that is a glorious 100+ page pdf...so ok I'll pay that.

The rest is as you might expect from an emulated C64 title. It uses a virtual keyboard, but it is quite unresponsive which contributes to making the game frustrating to play. For example you'll press an arrow several times to acknowledge a movement and trying to talk just results in you saying things like "hell" or "jo" as letters are cut out.

Because the game is so archaic, this simple fault in the interface really brings down the experience. Perhaps that was the point from EA, to show gamers that the "old title" isn't really the one you want when the new shiny IAP fest is there ready to go. I'd suggest the end result is just myself wanting a competent port.

But for nothing? It is still worth a look, because you might be able to stick with it and it is still an amazing game. But ultimately as it stands it is still more of a curiosity than something you will play for any serious length of time.

No save states it seems, I was nearly at the end of the tutorial when breakfast arrived, minimized, came back minutes later and had to restart the whole thing...
