Here is the review that matters:

GTA V console graphics: 10 out of 10, remarkable acheivement for 2005 hardware

GTA V PC graphics: 11 out of 10, I can feel it my bones

GTA V PC ENB mod graphics: I can see forever

The Escapist review. It's as if they forgot they were going to review a GTA title and were surprised it had so much cursing in it.

If they lowered the score due to that, I think it's safe to say that the majority of people who know what to expect from a GTA title could probably ignore that one.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Holy 10 out of 10 batman! Color me HYPEEEEEEEED!

Sounds like it was meltdown city in the last thread.

Guess people who have played the game already must have disagreed fiercely with some of the reviewers, huh?

That's because their batch of bannings come later with a patch. I would never break street date on a MS console.

I'm sure they've said before that they wouldn't ban early users if they were using a legitimately sourced copy.

I've played loads of games a day early on Xbox 360, think I even did it with Gears 3 because I got it on the Monday.

Why?

How many individual pieces of media bring together so much satire and reflection of our society that this game seems to be doing though? How many create a virtual city so full of references, radio stations fake ads, and what-have-you that a game like this does? Not many. Does it hold less value than Dickens comparatively? Of course it does. I think it still has more value as a cultural window than most movies or games do though.

I'm not even the biggest GTA fan but I can see the value that this game could potentially have as a window into this time sometime in the future.

Eh what does that matter. There's terabytes, terabytes of information online about this period of mankind, individually they may not be equal but combined they completely dwarfed, Historians won't be putting much weight in a source whose sole purpose is sales and entertainment, in comparison thousands of other sources that aren't.

This game will be important for video game industry and likely some of the controversy around, as a peak into the past for society in general there's little reason to even use it. Which is why I consider it a fairly silly comparison

But its a good thing to mention. I'm not really a fan of the earlier GTA games because, in part, of the great deal of cursing.

When they conclude a review like that, then most likely those were the main reasons it didn't get as high a review score as other websites.

Are there any reviews that touch on the differences between the 360 and PS3 versions? That gif has me a little worried.

At least on the PlayStation 3 version I tried, though the price for all this beauty is paid in framerate dips, messy anti-aliasing, ridiculous texture pop-in, and a reduction from the box's advertised "720p" resolution. A new version of the game on next-gen consoles or the PC would no doubt fix these issues and really set mouths drooling. As it is, Rockstar should be commended for duct-taping this mix of details and sacrifices while keeping the framerate tolerable and the glitch count to a minimum.

As a historian myself I question that. :p

But, we'll agree to disagree. We'll both be dead before we can know the answer anyway!

Oh Rockstar, you did it again..
What if it's just a case of pop up though?

Exactly what I'm thinking. Though the images are nearly identical in terms of distance to the trees, we could be seeing one version that's loaded the detail of the leaves already, and the other version/console caught in a moment micro seconds before loading the final details. Too hard to tell.

End OT.

That's not an accurate comparison, something is up with that shot, maybe pop-in or something. There's been many different side-by-side shots with plenty of trees and other objects and they have never looked that different

Edit: actually, found the source. Trees do look different but could still be pop-in. None of the other comparison shots are like that though

I don't mean this in a bad way but you are probably the biggest graphics whore I have ever seen. Graphics are more important to you than probably anyone I have ever come in contact with.

Again, not a bad thing at all. You really should have had a tag a long time ago though.

If you acquired the game through legitimate means, play it. It's not on you if a store broke street date.

edit: Folks, I don't think Lettuce is talking about playing it online. I think they mean "while online", as in, Microsoft/Sony can see you're playing it.

Yeah thats what i mean

Will find out for sure at 11am tomorrow when the DF analysis goes up.

There was a review on the other thread that said the PS3 version was worse and running at a lower resolution.

They just reviewed the PS3 version, and didn't mention the 360 version at all. There was no comparison.

I expected as much. Rockstar-developed games are always better on 360

The way I approached this was that the chances of the PS3 version being better than the 360 version, given history of multiplatform titles (specifically Rockstar games) was slim-to-none. This is why I went with the 360 version.

Needed to make a decision before the complete analysis was done by DF due to pre-order incentives.

Edit: actually, found the source. Trees do look different but if you capture the trees closer to the house, the ps3 version has more foilage. It has to be a case of pop-ins loading at different times. It's not an official shot:

Yeah, the trees clearly look different in that shot.

Also, looks like the 360 has a larger draw distance to a slight degree.

Are there no audio SatNav instructions? GTA IV had it so that you could toggle that on, off, or just for particular cars. 'Turn left, turn right' and such.

Just like the real world solution.

Does anyone know if that wasn't included in GTA V?

Not in the game that I've seen. Unless hidden in options.

any impression on how vehicle controls are handled?
GTA4's feel like soap and is pretty bad to me. Meanwhile I kind of like LA Noire's or Sleeping Dog's.

So it's proven that the gif above isn't a fair or accurate comparison

Trees exibit the same look as in that gif, unless i'm misunderstanding you?

Or wait, you're saying that the trees do look different in those shots but PS3 copy is better closer up? So, a draw distance thing?

Do people seriously think GTA is a "window into our culture"?

How is it not?

I'm not talking literally about the gameplay, obviously. We aren't all skydiving out of blimps while shooting guns on the way down.

In terms of the satire they execute on and the overall setting of the games how is it not?

I don't know man I just don't know.

It's about as much a window into our culture as a season of a crime drama to me. Which makes the comparison worthless (again to me at least).

One of the reviews I watched (IGN?) said they're grippier this time around but still have some body roll so it's possible to lose control if you're not careful.

What the...this is a joke right? They can't be that different.

All the stills I've seen has them looking practically identical. Like someone took the same shot and changed the brightness 1% in photoshop.

Clearly it is a desperate 360 fanatic, this game looks best on Ps3 why would Rockstar showcase the game for the first time ever reveal...on a lower quality version? Come on.

360 gamers got the port this time, its that simple

Christ, had to turn Sessler's review off when he started talking about it's "satirical fangs scorching the earth in the tradition of Bill Hicks" (or something, paraphrasing... maybe).

I couldn't help but to think if EA had been successful in its takeover of Take 2. Would it have been this awesome?

Satire is often a very generous descriptor. When you use the language Sessler does (invoking Dickens!), you are placing this in some very select company. We are talking about the series with "tw@t" Internet cafés. This is not Jonathan Swift. I don't know why we have to ascribe a sharpness it really doesn't deserve. Without having played GTA5 but having played all the previous entries, I'd say it is most likely to be a comedy.

I would be severely disappointed if this is our cultural time capsule. But I'm also a snooty snoot.
