Grand Theft Auto V - Review Thread | Take 2

PS3 version looks to have less details in the character models? In the side-by-side shot of Michael, it seems like his hair and stubble are more defined on the 360 side. Still not too fazed by that though. I needed a new PS3 since my last one died recently, so going for the GTA bundle was a no-brainer. If it means I have to deal with a very, very slightly inferior version, so be it.

It kind of looks like the 360 version just has more contrast for some reason. Otherwise they look the same to me.

Am I the only one confused why a publisher would embargo reviews up until the day before release when they know they have a 10/10 title on their hands? Always seems suspicious to me.

Part of the marketing. Build hype, SUPER CRAZY hype, have all these videos praising the game as the next coming on the leadup. Day before launch come out with 10/10 to get the hype to another dimension so anyone on the fence is swayed.

I don't understand the upheavel about Grand Theft Auto being a game catered towards the male demograph. It's like arguing about Rambo being too manly. I haven't played the game yet, but my bigger issue would be with the satire. GTA's satire can get tiresome and corny, and I hope this isn't the case with the new one.

I'm assuming a few people on here have already played some of GTA5? If so, is it worth searching out the activities before you get stuck into the story mode or are you better off finishing the story mode first and then doing everything else? Or perhaps a bit of both? I just wondered if there any benefits from the activities like better cars or weapons etc. I'm assuming side missions are unlocked as you play through the story mode?

Metacritic 97 for Grand Theft Auto V
Metacritic 98 for Grand Theft Auto IV.

It's official. GTA 5 is a worse game than GTA 4. Better cancel that pre-order for tomorrow.

Isn't it at 98 for GTAV?

Edit: guess that's just 360. Everyone sell your PS3s!

I've only played just under 2 hours, haven't done any story other than 1 mission, spent rest of the time just free roaming. So I can't really tell you much about how side-missions get unlocked.

1 point difference?! Might as well be 60! Preorder cancelled indeed!

I know you're joking. Somewhere, someone is saying this exact thing, and is 100% serious.

GTA is catered towards teenage white american males. Everyone else is a target for the hurtful jokes. That's what bothers people.

Am I the only one who is a little cautious of these reviews? Considering the near-universal praise GTA4 got, I can't help but feel slightly skeptical.

Bunch of asshats scoring it 1, 2 & 3 just for shits, giggles & to "offset the 10s." User score means even less than the critic score, imo.

I find aggregate user score rather accurate at depicting the overall community view of a game. Not every game's aggregate user score is rated to oblivion by 1, 2, and 3's and those ratings tend to, like you said, balance the plethora of users who gave the game 10's because its a new installment in a popular franchise. If it's a good game it will reflect in the aggregate user score. The games that are bombarded with 1, 2, and 3's are the ones that don't progress the series or make improvements; often times they take steps backwards.

People tend to single out games that are bombarded with negative reviews, even if they deserved the negative feedback, over the games that have great user aggregate scores and are popular.

Most activities are unlocked by playing the story

How often does a well known, and almost always universally praised series/developer get anything but 10/10 from critics with every new release? Look no further than Assassin's Creed 3.

Wrong.
Their jokes may be shit, but their target is pretty spread across the board.

Unless they completely changed style in GTAV, after several years of going after pretty much anyone.

As an adult white-ish (I'm Sicilian, I have no clue what race I'm supposed to be) European I am quite amazed at how easily people get offended. I mean, I grew up seeing one of the most despicable criminal organization killing good people left and right and making a rather nice place into a social toxic wasteland of ignorance and crime... and yet I don't get mad when people make mafia jokes. Or jokes about Italians.

I really like the reviews that specifically call into question their high score while mentioning that the game does have problems. But they shrug their shoulders any way.

Though if the game is damn fun then the game is damn fun so I guess if that's the justification...

Just a different strategy. GTA carries a lot more weight with its brand than a new IP such as TLoU. People who like the brand will preorder anyway, so the reviews aren't for them. The reviews are for undecided people, for those who hadn't necessarily been planning to get the game. Later reviews mean it's fresher in the customer's mind when it's actually available for purchase.

For TLoU, on the other hand, a week and a half between reviews and release was a good amount of time to drum up hype from all the news outlets and get people familiar with what the game was supposed to be, and allow for some last-minute preorders.

luckily the review text pretty much gives you a good idea what to expect. open world GTA game with solid shooting driving, a lot of shit to do and explore.

it's GTA but more.
