Final Fantasy XIV PS4: 60 FPS, 1080p, Equivalent to Highest PC settings

On February the 22nd 2014 Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will enter its beta testing phase on PS4 (and those that already bought the PS3 version will get the PS4 version for free), but how will it run and how good will it really look? According to Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida, it’ll run really well and look great, as he shared today in an interview on Game Watch.

Yoshida-san explained that the PS4 version of the game will have a visual fidelity equivalent to the current highest PC setting, and that it’ll run in 1080p resolution at 60 fps, unlike the PS3 version that is limited to 720p and 30 fps. It will also display the same number of characters on screen as the PC version.

It’s worth mentioning that he didn’t mention if the PS4 version will run at 60 FPS stably or will just get there when there isn’t much crowd. A stable 60 FPS framerate would be a quite amazing feat, considering that at the moment you need a rather beefy PC to keep the framerate locked there in the most crowded situations.

That said, he clarified that a DirectX 11 version of the PC client is currently in development, and while the PS4 version will use some of the new DirectX 11 features, it won’t use them all.

In addition to that, he also stated that, since there’s memory to spare, the option to use keyboard and mouse with the PS4 version will be implemented. You can already use them in the PS3 version, but the keyboard and mouse UI isn’t implemented due to memory limitations, making them almost useless. The touch pad of the DualShock 4 has also been already tested to be used for targeting.

Talking about the PS4 beta test Yoshida-san said that it’ll happen on separate servers from the live servers currently used for PS3 and PC, as the team cannot afford to disturb the current players if critical bugs were to occur. The test will happen in stages and players will initially begin with new characters, and then they’ll be given access to their old PS3 characters.

The estimated duration for the PS4 beta test is about a month. If everything goes well, data from the third week onward will carry over to the live servers.

He can't confirm a stable 60 FPS because of the FATE system and being in a city with a lot of players in it. Still, 1080p/60 FPS is nice. I'll double-dip if there's a CE for PS4.

That's impressive, too bad the game is a broken grindfest mess.

Interesting, most of the opinions I have seen seem to be pretty positive, and what I got to play of the beta did not really feel all that grindy.

Can you elaborate on your issues with the game?

Well I have a level 50 Bard and Black Mage and all that's left for me to do is grind dungeons, there's no PVP and the Duty Finder is a buggy mess and don't get me started on the error 90K I get when finally getting into a dungeon after queuing for 2 hours...

I agree. Level 40 onwards and you routinely run out of quests, requiring you to grind out 1-2 levels to progress to the next main story quest.

I haven't played for an entire week because I'm level 47 and am dreading having to grind to 49 to progress the main story.

There simply isn't enough quest content.

I've been playing since early access and I don't find it to be a broken grindfest mess at all. In fact it's been the absolute opposite.

Did you reach cap yet? Cause after you do it's basically running one or two dungeons over and over again for seals. Or you can FATE grind for 50 levels to level up a new class since you'll have already run out of quests before you hit 50 on your first class.

How much is the monthly fee on this game, anyway? Is it directly downloadable from PSN?

Played the beta a few weeks back; it's fun, so I might look into it some more on PS4.

I think you need help there sir.

No it isn't. The game is probably the best MMORPG on the market at the moment, and calling it a "grindfest" reeks of ignorance, as what's probably its most relevant flaw is that it's way too easy to level up fast.

Inaccurate thread title unless I am misunderstanding the word "equivalent."

No, it's not inaccurate. It refers to the current highest settings, and that's what Yoshida says, as the article correctly specifies. Since we can't see what the future highest PC settings will be, the title is plenty accurate.

I got to 50 before you sis?

I've mostly enjoyed the game so far, but I have run into some small grinding walls in my leveling (mostly around level 35-45). This is without skipping storyline, doing all the available duties, quite a few FATEs, etc. Sort of jarring coming from WoW, where there is literally zero grinding in the leveling process.

The most efficient way to level however is still grinding FATEs though, so I'm unsure as to why a lot of people in this thread are disagreeing with that grinding comment.

They tried to remove the grind but in the end it just made the problem worse. Dungeon spam, FATE spam. The story is the worst grind of all because it's boring as hell and unskippable. The game is chock full of filler content. It isn't even a fun grind because the game refuses to encourage social interactions. Hopefully it changes in the next expansion when they add some actual content.

Did they ever confirm if all regions would get the automatic upgrade, or is it just Japan?

A little OT, but is the only reason this isn't coming to Xbone/360 us because MS won't allow Xbox Players to play on the same servers as PS4/PS3/PC players? Did FFXI allow you to play with PS2/PC users?

Is 1080p 60FPS possible on PC already or are there any technical problems?

It runs at 60fps on my rig when not much is going on on the screen. When things get congested (eg FATEs, towns, etc), the framerate will drop to the mid 40s. The PS4 version will do the same.

So you rushed to 50 on two classes, and now you're left with only the endgame, and you're blaming the game?

Yeah. Nothing to see here.

I believe the reason is related to XBL Gold fees. XI doesn't require you to have Gold (even now) and Square wanted the same deal for XIV. MS refused.

Yeah. Nothing to see here.

The "endgame" is like...a dungeon. Sounds like a reason to blame the game to me.

MS also refused cross-platform play, and SE doesn't want to split up the community.

Cool, I am gonna hold off getting this until the PS4 version comes out. 60fps/1080p is what I was wanting

If you buy the PS3 version you will get a free update to the PS4 version.

I wonder if you need PSN+ on the PS4 version since online MP is going to be behind a paywall on PS4?

So wait a minute running Fate for hours isn't grinding?

It is grind - no one who played the game to end-game should disagree; however, what MMO isn't a "grind" in some aspects?

They have. It's been announced by Square Enix USA as well with a press release. That's an official confirmation.

PS: It's a ONE WAY thing. if you upgrade, you lose access to the PS3 version.

Yea it already runs at 1080p 60fps on capable rig, it's just that in towns or areas with more than few dozen of people the framerate will drop, which I think will be the case with the ps4 version. Considering most of the time you're in instance or playing with only a handful of players, it's not a problem.
