PAL Charts - Week 40, 2013

Wii U software units just slightly below PSV software units at retail in September. Each accounted for 0.7% of the market, but the Wii U was apparently just below. More later, when I get time to juggle the numbers.

Haha that's fucking terrible.

Jesus, wtf did Vita even have? Fifa?

Killzone + Fifa 12(14) would have given the Vita a bit of a software boost in Sept... however slight.

Would be beyond shocking if Wii U couldn't scrape ahead of it on this score for the rest of the year though.

A victory worthy of song though it would surely be.

Edit: UK just to be sure. I know regulars in the PAL Charts threads will know that, but not everyone's a regular.

Yikes. The Vita had Killzone. What did the Wii U have?

I don't have the sales figures at hand, but again: that's simply not true. Gameboy most likely sold way less launch aligned.

It's also worth noting that, going by the graph you posted, 3DS is just behind DS and GBA. TBH I would have expected the difference to be much bigger by now (and it's surely gonna get bigger).

Again, I don't think M-C / Famitsu or NPD tracked that far back. So, really, we can only go on what's tracked in reliable numbers. Also, I'm not sure, DS and GBA are just behind. From the chart, it looks like DS [after Lite rev, Brain Training, Nintendogs etc] just shoots up and GBA too to a lesser extent whilst the 3DS is tapering off slightly. No doubt this situation will improve with Monster Hunter in Japan and X / Y everywhere else. At this point, my understanding was 3DS was tracking slightly below GBA numbers but, after Mon Hun and X / Y, this situation will most likely have reversed.

I think this simply isn't a fair point to make. You are picking one country (and one that, lately, didn't exactly tend to favor Nintendo) and you pick one single week in said country. 1 out of 40 is abysmal, no doubt. But that's not telling us anything at all - well, it's telling us that 3DS had bad sales in the top 40 in week 40 2013 in the UK.

I don't understand your reasoning when you say the UK doesn't favour Nintendo. DS was just as big in the UK as anywhere else [something like 12 million LTD - which is a record for Nintendo UK]. The Wii was a similar success story in the UK as everywhere else in the Western world. But, in any case, I can only comment on the chart as it is shown and also to state how just a few hundred units secures a Top 40 listing. I would expect a handheld from Nintendo to be in its growth phase in it's second year. And to me that would mean seeing a lot more than just Animal Crossing in the Top 40 this side of Xmas.

I'm not gonna go out and claim that 3DS is doing great or anything, but there simply are a few things to consider when doing comparisons like these (including the ones against GBA):

As Sales Age regulars have often pointed out, 3DS is doing excellent in Japan and meh everywhere else. But persistent weakness in the US and Euro markets mark down it's overall figures. It's not going to set the world on fire as previous Nintendo handhelds in the past did. Nintendo will just have to adjust to this new market reality. Ironically, collapse of Wii U sales will probably send very many Nintendo fans to the 3DS [myself included] as their go to Nintendo system.

a) GBA was a monster, basically from launch on. So "winning" a comparison against that handheld isn't an easy goal at all.

b) DS had its issues at launch, but did really take off after like ~1.5 years and it's sold over 150 million units LTD. So, who on earth expected 3DS to top that?

c) The market today is different than it was 5 or 10 years ago. I guess no one doubts that Nintendos handheld division was hurt by smartphones and tablets. The interesting question, imo, isn't whether or not Nintendo can "beat" the GBA and/or the DS, but rather if it's able to be a viable plattform after all is said and done and warrant a successor.

What would be much more worrisome for Nintendo than not selling as much as GBA or DS did is if the handheld market would continue to shrink. I do think that the US market is still shrinking (using 12 month TTMs), but worldwide it seems like it's pretty stable (on a significantle lower level though than 5 years ago!) and the US handheld market might soon (to be more precise, starting with this holiday season) be growing (atleast slightly) again.

In terms of software sales it should also be noted that 3DS software sales do only include those of sales that came from 3DS titles that are available at retail (it however includes both the retail and the downloadable version). Basically, any title that is eShop exclusive is not counted. It's difficult to tell how much these titles sell, but than again there are quite a few available on the eShop, so it sort of makes 3DS' software sales look worse compared to those of DS. It's also worth noting that Nintendo probably can sell less software titles per system compared to DS, but still have the same margin (per system sold) because a) a significant part of those lost software sales are from games like Brain Training (i.e. lower margin), b) games sold through the eShop (both eShop exclusives and retail games) most likely have a far bigger margin than those sold at retail.

Long story made short: 3DS isn't gonna rise to heaven, but 3DS isn't doomed either. Weak performance in a single week in one countries top 40, imo, doesn't mean shit in the grand scheme of things (especially considering that said performance is completely different in other countries - see Germany week 39).

Not much to disagree with here. At this stage, much of the shrinkage of the handheld market in NA has occurred at the expense of Sony's handheld system. But it has affected Nintendo too. In-fact, based on the most current NPD numbers, the 3DS is actually tracking below the PSP in the same timeframe. Again, with the release of X / Y, this situation will see an improvement.

Finally, I think Nintendo is being far too conservative with it's PR, software download figures and it's overall presentation. I never go into the eShop but does Nintendo have download charts? And if not why not? Why isn't it offering chart placements [ie just a listing not actual raw download figures] to bodies like GFK Chart Track. It'd be free publicity for them and would generate further interest in the e-Shop. I'm assuming here that Nintendo UK / NoE would probably have to seek permission from Iwata at NCL to do this. And I'm thinking he would probably say no.

Well, actually 3DS has been the best selling console through the whole Summer in UK, and soon it'll outsell PS3 and 360 for the whole year, while in Germany and France it's already the best selling console for this year. Looking at past trends, it shouldn't be so different in Spain and Italy. NoUK spokesperson said recently there have been "real momentum" in UK. In US, it's been the best selling console for the last four months, but the console should sell more (August was worse than 2012, but it was XL + NSMB2 debut month...)

I remember it was near 9 millions, while PSP was at around 8.2 millions. Maybe you're referring to the comparison between PSP in 2007 and 3DS in 2013; that's where PSP wins, not up to date

And that's the problem: they have charts on eShop, they're also posted bi-daily here on GAF from different regions. These are charts updated every three hours, counting the last two weeks as tracking period. In Japan, they started posting the weekly sales top 25. There are also All-Time Charts.

First report on sales

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/gta-v-reclaims-uk-no-1-pokemon-and-beyond-debut-in-top-ten/0122536

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V has claimed it’s second UKIE Gfk Chart-Track All Formats UK No.1 after two weeks at the top for EA’s FIFA 14.

Nintendo’s 3DS RPGs Pokemon X and Pokemon Y debut in third and fourth place respectively, with week one sales doubling last year’s Black 2 and White 2.

Sony’s PS3 exclusive Beyond: Two Souls begins its charts stint in fifth, falling short of the No.1 debut achieved by Quantic Dream’s last release, Heavy Rain.

NIS America’s Dragon’s Crown debuts in 19th and Mind Candy’s Moshi Monsters: Katsuma Unleashed in 28th.

Here’s the UK Top 20 in full for the week ending October 12th:
1. Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar)
2. FIFA 14 (EA)
3. Pokemon X (Nintendo)
4. Pokemon Y (Nintendo)
5. Beyond: Two Souls (Sony)
6. F1 2013 (Codemasters)
7. Just Dance 2014 (Ubisoft)
8. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition (Microsoft)
9. Disney Infinity (Disney)
10. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD (Nintendo)
11. Saints Row IV (Deep Silver)
12. LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (Warner)
13. NBA 2K14 (2K Sports)
14. May Payne 3 (Rockstar)
15. PES 2014 (Konami)
16. Splinter Cell Blacklist (Ubisoft)
17. Tomb Raider (Square Enix)
18. Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Nintendo)
19. Dragon’s Crown (NIS America)
20. The Last of Us (Sony)

Remember, this is the All Format Top 40.
Pokémon doubling B/W 2 is good. Dragon's Crown in top 20 is fantastic, given the game :D

Surprised Beyond only managed fifth. I guess Heavy Rain burnt a lot of people as it sure as hell wasn't for a lack of advertising....

Considering what it was up against, I don't think 5th is too bad. Probably not going to beat GTA V or either Pokemon and FIFA is also very popular...

Sure, still figured it would chart higher considering it had an ad campaign that's on par with TLoU. Ah well, not to worry. I'm sure Sony will be happy with its placement. Wish my copy would arrive though, damn Amazon and their ever increasing unreliability...

I'm not too familiar with TLoU sales TBH. Would it have charted higher than 5th (or 4th) if it released this week?

I think so. I'm sure others might disagree, but there was a lot of hype for it at the time. Then again, it could just be that Sony struck it lucky by releasing it during the Summer lull.

Yeah, that's certainly true. It's nice to hope for things though and it would have been a nice boost to QD to see their game chart in the top three or higher.

Still, I'm sure they'll be happy with a top five placement.

I think they will. Seems like they managed their expectations for it realistically. It wasn't marketed to high hell and back and the review embargo clearly went up on release day because the mixed reaction they got was the one they were anticipating (despite whatever silly spin from fans about wanting to keep spoilers down.)

Yoshida's already shown confidence in their next game. Sony knows what they're doing with QD.

We already have some indications about Pokémon, thinking about it. In fact, both SKUs are higher than GTAV on 360.
If the game follows the same pattern as last weeks, 57% sales were on 360. Since it sold around 110k, this would mean around 62.7k for both SKUs as minimum.

Oh, I was just calculating using the percentage drops from some older numbers in past threads.

120K then?

EDIT: or 109 or 110, so many possibilities lol.

It's confusing because the number Rockstar put out into the public domain on launch week was an upweighted number. The actual figure in the report was lower, but they upweighted for retailers not covered by the report at an accepted industry rate.

The percentage drops will have been based on actual numbers in the weekly report.

There's some dull insight for you...

It should also mean that Beyond is well, well below TLoU, like 10/20% of what it sold first week even with the Wednesday release date.

Beyond debuting as high as it possibly could given what it was up against. Good to see I guess, but I expect it'll have decent legs. Should do as well as Heavy Rain in the long run I'm guessing. Glad there still seems to be a market for titles like this.

But ouch at Pokemon failing to top the charts, all indications were that it was a lock for the top spot. When was the last main Pokemon that didn't take number 1 in the UK at launch?

It topped the individual charts with both SKUs, and if it weren't counted as two SKUs, it'd have certainly topped the overall one as well.

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/gamesblog/2013/oct/14/uk-top-20-video-games-chart

The Guardian Official Splits

GTAV on 360 sold 55% of the total amount.
So, since its total is around 110k, GTAV 360 sold around 60.5k. Then, each Pokémon SKU sold 60.5k at least, given they're both higher than GTAV.
Pokémon X/Y first week - around 121k as minimum.

FIFA 14 sold around 90k; PS3 SKU accounted for 42% - 37.8k
Then, Beyond: Two Souls sold less than 37.8k

If anyone cares, here's some comparisons for BTS

Last of Us sold over 4 times as many at launch in June as BTS. Not that suprising to me as tLoU has much broader appeal.

Heavy Rain launched Feb 2010 and sold over 3 times as many as BTS. HR launched in a comparatively quieter period - AvP in its second week and a smattering of other Sega releases, but no major problems.

All that said, I suspect Sony is probably disappointed with its actual sales numbers, but its as symptomatic of the ailing market as it is any specific problem with the game

The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker (7+) Wii U (99)

Did people really get the gamecube version or am I missing something?

EDIT:
Dragon's Crown (12+) PS3 (59)
VITA (41)

Okay, these are some amazing results for Vita!No matter how much it sold, this ratio is great news!

Is Pokemon only counting 1 day then or does it include pre release sales as well?
It should be the whole of that week.

Ah, so Pokemon X/Y would have been number one in the combined chart if they were listed as one entry.
Meanwhile Fifa gets listed as one entry. I'd say the Vita version is very different from the PS3 version...then again those lesser versions tend to be negligible sales anyway.

Though honestly movie tie-ins were worse in that respect where they can sometimes be unrecognizablely different games. I'd say both examples are certainly more different than X or Y...I guess it would just make things confusing if you split some games with the same name and merge other with different names.
