Hi everyone!

Recently, I had the chance to play the Xbox One and its launch games on an event floor at an Xbox Tour event in my region. I returned being highly disappointed in the system: Even knowing the Xbox One isn’t going to be the most powerful of consoles, I expected much bigger a graphical improvement than I got to see with my own eyes.

Even Ryse's and Forza 5's gameplay visuals didn't strike me as a breakthrough, they seemed more of a refinement of current generation graphics than the great leap that I expected to experience after eight years. Battlefield 4 looked downright terrible (and Kinect leaning constantly interfered with unimpeded gamepad gameplay - I finally put a carton in front of the sensor to get a good go at the game), FIFA 14 didn't seem noticeably different from current gen and even Dead Rising only looked so-so.

Another thing to dislike about the Xbox One was the controller: The shape of the lower grips made it uncomfortable to hold, the sticks seemed too tiny and the bumpers were just strange (the amount of force needed to press them just didn't seem right/comfortable).

The Kinect only games on display were on an equal footing with current gen Kinect in terms of gameplay. The increased recognition fidelity wasn't immediately noticeable or beneficial in these games. The console itself seemed pretty clunky and big, and Kinect is a huge monster of a camera bar.

People that recognize my username on this forum may realize that I've preferred the PS4 to the Xbox One for a long time now for rational reasons (better performance, more interesting line up, cheaper): Even then, I didn't expect to get this negative an impression out of this event – it’s kind of shocking, really.

What were other Gaffer's impressions of their play experience? Do you expect people will be disappointed at launch time with the general lack of a visual fidelity leap?

What kind of graphics did you expect? Have you not seen videos and pics of the XB1 and PS4 games thus far???

Not noticing the graphics improvements will be a problem for most people at road shows etc..

If you put Forza 4 next to Forza 5 you would notice the differences ALOT more.

That is true, but you shouldn't have to do that,

The difference between graphics on a state of the art next-gen console vs. 8 year old hardware should be much more ostensible. You should be immediately able to notice the difference. You should not be required to juxtapose the game to a previous gen game.

What kind of graphics did you expect? Have you not seen videos and pics of the XB1 and PS4 games thus far???

Dude there is a MAJOR difference between seeing videos on the internet and playing the game yourself in person.

Plus, most net videos don't fully convey a game's graphics well, either they are of poor quality (shot off-screen, low-res) or they are made to look better than they actually do.

I only give a shit about the games when choosing a launch console. And while I'm getting neither Xbox One or PS4 for a year or two, if I were to choose one right now, Xbone has by far the most interesting lineup. Especially with the recent PS4 launch lineup woes.

Graphically, I don't judge any system at launch because in 4 years the launch games will look laughably bad.

Kinect Sport Rivals (climbing and jet skiing) as well as Just Dance 2014.

I prefer (and have been preferring for quite some time now) the PS4 for reasons stated in the op: Even before trying it out, the data never seemed to favour the Xbox. I'd like for MS to be a better contender, but they just aren't.

In all fairness, you're probably not the right person to be making a thread like this.

Even if we assume you're being 100% honest! your post history won't allow anyone but those on "your side" to take you seriously.

I mean, I know a few people who have had hands on withe the One as well and all but one of them came back with nothing but praise. The one who didn't just said that Forza didn't blow him away like he was expecting, but he thought the controller was fantastic.

So yeah, I take your post with an island sized grain of salt.

Hmmm...

A lot of OP's impressions run counter to mine (I saw it during the Philly event). I was leaning PS4, and still am, but a good bit of what was there impressed me.

And I'm not getting the controller hate. It on Forza was sick.

Ryse is shit but that's that goddamn multiplayer demo I think.

Forza and KI stuck out visually for me, and DR3 basically had all the zombies in the world

I had a chance to play, and really the controller felt the same as the 360 controller to me. The only noticable difference for me was the rumble in the triggers, but everything else felt exactly the same in my books. Which to me isnt a bad thing. I immediately felt comfortable with it.

Same thing. I was playing for some time before I remembered it was a new controller. The D-pad feels immediately different, but everything else is just like on 360 (didn't try Forza, so I can't judge the trigger rumble)

None of the stuff coming out this year will blow anyone away on either console. I am worried about all the negative feedback the controller is getting though.

I was really worried we'd go a full day with a positive outlook on the Xbox One. Glad someone stepped up.

If the system sucks it sucks. What do you want people to do?

I'm gonna get one an X1 to play Killer Instinct, Crimson Dragon, and Halo but even I know what i'm getting into just like I did when I bought a ps3 at launch (which Sony did turn around later in the cycle however im HIGHLY skeptical if MS will do the same)

I'm just confused, did the games look much worse in person than it did in videos or something?

What were you expectations?

Have heard some thoughts on XB1 Kinect from a friend on IRC who works for an Ubisoft studio developing a smaller multiplatform downloadable title for early next year. He's not a developer though, just an IT grunt who sets them up and tests to make sure everything is working properly.

I'm curious to see if they're true.

I think op started this wrong,
you should start with hey guys, and end with I have pre ordered both console.
That way you are more convincing. /s

Given the positivity of the Ryse thread its to be expected from someone. I came away from the EG Expo positive about Xbox One. My opinion is probably worth little here but I felt it is a clear step up from this gen.

Forza is still basically the same Forza, just prettier so its hard to be blown away by it. I played a few races, and called it a day with that game at a demo. KI was far more entertaining to me, which is strange as I don't normally play fighting games.

Wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even play the Xbox one. From what i've heard FIFA and BF4 are not available on the tour. Most people love the controller. Checked post history....im out

You are wrong, both were present. BF4 in a local multiplayer configuration on a small factory with outdoors type of conquest map and FIFA 14 on multiple systems with two controllers connected.

I think impulse triggers are going to be a bigger deal innovation-wise then we realize.
Triggers with modifiable resistance settings have application beyond just driving games.

Shame that the rest of the controller experience is coming up short.

It's not the resistance that is adjusted, just a vibration effect - but it is much cooler than I expected it to be (I'm the type of person that typically disables rumble at a system level).

What kind of graphics did you expect? Have you not seen videos and pics of the XB1 and PS4 games thus far???

Of course, and I never had grand illusions of next gen being some great graphics powerhouse: But even then, everything did seem far less impressive on the "big screen".

I found this on an xbox forum. It looks smaller.

It's chunkier, but seems less long (again, I don't own a Kinect). It seems bigger in volume.

i also saw the launch games a few weeks ago, and also share the same thoughts. this isnt to say ps4 was overly impressive, either.

killer instinct looks nice aided by a nice framerate and decent character models and particle effects, but forza 5 was fairly UGLY. jaggy, low detail environments, fairly average car models etc. if you told me it was a "hd" port of forza 4 i would 110% believe you.

ryse looked ok, but the animations really ruin the game. they are very, very janky. the game looks a bit blurry too? could be the AA they are using but it doesnt look very sharp. gameplay was pretty generic too.

dead rising 3 looked pretty awful aswell but it was SUPER fun. it nearly single handedly sold me on the system. it ran well though! never dropped below 30fps from what i saw.

That fine, I'm not buying Forza anyway. I'm not a racing sim fan. But the OP, as I said, is probably the wrong person to make such a thread given the post history.

Odds are, he went into the experience looking to point out faults subconsciously due to his "leanings".

I'm sorry but I've seen your posts, and I personally cannot take your opinions on stuff like this very seriously. Can't speak for others though.

That's fair but would an xbox fan's opinion really be any less subjective? I think anybody's opinion holds as much weight as another's because good luck finding somebody that is completely objective.

Considering there are no Kinect only titles, and Battlefield 4 and Fifa 14 (edit: I stand corrected ) aren't listed as games being demoed during the tour, would you mind clarifying?

So what are their impressions of the new kinect from a developer standpoint?

No it looks less wide but crazy beefy

Looks much bigger to me

oh, the controller was great though. both controllers on next gen systems feel fanfuckingtastic!

oh a worrying note, i felt the xbox one console and it was running H O T i mean like, super super hot. dont know if that will be an issue in the long run but i dont even remember my 360 running close to that temp.

I don't see what's wrong with his post history...? There's more people interested in the PS4 than Xbox One so it's not surprising to see him go to PS4 threads. He questioned the dedicated servers just like future Xbox One owners questioned Killzone's 60 FPS and dedicated servers.

why does it look like it's skipping a few frames when he puts his helmet on?

Probably because the player model switches from a non-helmet-model to the helmet-model

And after watching the newest Ryse trailer, I'm quite certain that OP played an old build since it's the best looking next-gen game probably

Also, why did OP feel the need to make his own thread? There's a thread for Tour impressions, I've posted in two. Not exactly earth shattering here. Seems he played less games too

So the reasons you were disappointed in it are exactly those same reasons you prefer the PS4 and have done so for a long time...

Well I'm shocked you were disappointed in that case.

You know why.

To the original poster, how big are your hands? Give us a ring size to give us an idea. I noticed you mentioned the sticks were too small so maybe the One isn't good for big handed gamers?
