Gamera Next Gen - Gamera 2 looks fucking awesome!
Im gonna miss Gamera :( Gamera! Goodbye Gamera!

Next up: a true terror from space!

The 90's Gamera trilogy is only $9.99 on Blu-ray on Amazon, for those interested.

Yeah it's damn cheap. I actually imported a spare copy after watching the first 2 movies for the first time.
Love them! I'm saving up the third one till I need to watch a good monster movie after I delve into some others that might turn out to be less than average.

The 90's Gamera films are truly brilliant, especially the second one.
Most fans prefer either the first or the third but I found the first one still didn't get the grip with the new tone entirely and the third is like James hinted at full of this unnecessary primitive CGI and the story is somewhat rough around the edges. Gamera 2 hits IMO all the right notes with it's almost flawless special-effects and a satisfiyng story and atmosphere.

Liked that he included a short overview of Prometheus, too. But I'm also glad he didn't waste an entire video on it.

Interested in his take on Aliens, since it wasn't really horror.

I hope he doesn't waste his time with the shitty AvP films, better to spend just a few minutes like he did with Prometheus.

He'll probably knock both out in the same video, like Freddy vs Jason and the Nightmare remake.

Haven't really been following these this year since the video player he's using now is usually shit for me, but tried for Alien and it worked fine. Good video.

Interested in seeing what he says about 3/Resurrection. Especially in terms of the Assembly Cut of 3 vs the theatrical release.

but aren't these the butchered versions he mentions on the videos too?

Yes and no. They are edited for time because MST3K adds skits during the show, but there is still blood and whatnot, so the edits do no appear to be for content. It is still a great way to get all of the movies at once, and they are among the best too.

Glad he noted Aliens has action, but not THAT much. I always feel like laughing at the people who claim it's just some nonstop roller coaster action film.

For starters, the aliens don't even appear until over an hour into the film, and even then, there are only three action scenes in the whole film, which runs well over two hours.

It's not as polished and perfectly suspenseful as Alien (which pretty much has zero flaws to me), but it doesn't get enough credit for being an action HORROR film. Most of the film is quiet and creepy.

classic films that are infinitely rewatchable for me :P
just visited NYC this summer and they we're playing:

had never seen Aliens in a movie theater, has a special charm to it!

I dunno, I a little bit disappointed with this years Monster Madness.
I always took it as a great opportunity to get in touch with new horrorflicks I never heard about. This year he talks so much about weller know movies (As far as you can label Gamera as a well know movie ;) ), that there is not that many interesting for me.

But I dont want to say that he is doing no good work, James is great as always and I know that he made in addition a new AVGN horror special while making a movie and having a now a son, so in the end I think that I am ok with this season of Monster Madness.

Monster Madness has always been a great insight into the horror movie world, and this year is no different. I've never seen a Hammer Bros. movie, and I had only heard of Gamera because of the MST3K rights issues (and watched the original on Netflix a few weeks ago).

The only movie I've seen in the Alien series is Aliens, and I really don't remember that much of it.

the first two are fantastic. really just great movies. i think the first one is better, but you really can't go wrong with either one.

i've seen the first four actual alien films, and i think it's a progressive downward slope. alien is something of a masterpiece, aliens is a great action flick, alien 3 is pretty to look at and at least competently made, and alien resurrection is nasty crap. resurrection is kind of fascinating to watch though. i can't believe the series went from the first one to that in less than 20 years.

My favourite thing about Resurrection is the way Whedon tries to disown it and pass the buck on to everyone else. His quote on it is pretty much "everyone fucked up but me."

half the problem with resurrection is the terrible whedonese. stuff like characters talking over each other, or everyone having a clever retort.

the other half of the problem with resurrection is jeunet's dizzying directing. way way way too many twisting closeups. the two combine forces for a really obnoxious movie to watch and listen to.

I had never read or heard about the Ants movie (Them!) that seems to have inspired some stuff in Aliens. Had anyone read about it before or is it something James came up with?

It's strange hearing Rolfe say that Aliens was made in period where filmmakers took time to make sequels, when Monster Madness repeatedly points out how often quick cash-in sequels are made.

Yeah, it's decently known I think. Kind of an homage in Fallout 3 with a quest called "Those!" regarding the giant ants.

I had a google but couldn't find much due to the keywords being "aliens" and "them". Still i found it very interesting. Had not heard about it before.
