OT but:
Friend of mine wants to buy a PS4 now (I know, I know).
I know its way too late, but are there perchance any places still offering a guaranteed day one delivery?

Didn't Sony demo a feature in the February reveal where you could control a friends game over PSN? Did that end up not being a real thing? I haven't seen any mention of it since. Its also possible I made up this feature.

They didn't demo it, they mentioned it, and that was during the "cloud" portion of their presentation. If my memory serves correctly, that was after introducing Gaikai.

Assume it to be vaporware until proven otherwise.

None that I know of. Your friend might have some luck checking in store on release day. Sony are apparently hoping to have some free stock in stores if the Game manager I spoke to is to be believed....

you don't even need a game manager to know that. Sony actually said already they were holding back some stock so that they can take advantage of those 'walk in' consumers, especially in the event that XBO is sold out.

300 MB might not sound like it would take very long to download over a good connection. However, that could change if you consider that hundreds of thousands of people will be hammering Sony's servers on launch day.

Sony should consider some alternative methods of distributing the update. They could press some DVDs to ship out to retailers, who can hand them out to customers at the counter. That would be a great solution for people who aren't hooking up their system to the Internet. Another possibility would be to allow users to download the patch in advance, and store it on a USB flash drive.

Put me in the camp that cant believe they are shipping a console that needs to update to play movies.

The rest i sadly expected. Not giving people a date on the suspend feature is kind of a bummer though, when it was one of the original features shown for the system.

So it's basically the same as the Xbox One, the thing is almost useless without the update. I fully expected there to be an update, but that's a little ridiculous

Why do people think this is not par for the course in 2013/4?

Of course they're gonna take the extra 3 months to work on the OS. C'mon now. Hardly unexpected.

As for the Blu-ray activation thing, I still maintain that it's has to do with licensing-per box-costs, as the way WMV worked on PS3.

I also think the BG music thing is just being over-parsed.

The suspend/resume thing is what worries me. But not the rest.

So I didn't have to write my opinion at all for this thread - you pretty much covered it perfectly, including your last sentence - that I would've expected to be functioning on dev consoles / behind closed doors months ago since they can claim the feature surely they've - you know, tested it?
So yeah bang on.

Update us small just like PS3 updates more than likely it will be on every PS4 game disc. Plus you can try directly from their website like you can for PS3 updates.

300mb isn't a big deal really.

While I am an opponent of Day 1 updates - it makes sense considering Sony said they were aiming for 16m console launch window. Them fuckers been in boxes for months already, my guess. I'm quite sure the firmware wasn't up to snuff months ago.

Sucks, but is the way things are being done nowadays.

It's probably similar to the WMV "activation" on PS3 - they save $10 or so a console that -doesn't- come online and download the activation key.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but the fact that Sony is allowing voice commands on PS4 via both Headsets & the PS Eye Camera means there's no excuse for developers to not put voice commands in the PS4 versions of games that use voice commands on the Xbox1 version.

I'm fully expecting that the download will be available in the PlayStation website, just like every PS3 and Vita is.
There's no reason to expect Sony would change now, especially with such a critical patch.

Shopto are still taking ps4 preorders if anybody in the UK wants one still.

Yes, but will they deliver day one? Because Amazon is taking preorders too, but that's for after the release date.

I'm wondering this myself... that was the first thing I thought of when I read the news earlier. Their servers are gonna melt. Even companies that are prepared for the inrush tend to get blown apart on day one (Blizzard, Rockstar, etc).

I certainly hope so. In fact, I hope they drop it early, so those of us with some forward thinking can download the thing a couple days ahead of time before that server melts too.

I actually feel bad for all the people that don't keep up to day-to-day gaming news, and won't know this is there until they plug the thing in. I hope typical functions (like games) actually work out of the box, or this could be bad.

Isn't editing the captured gameplay a confirmed feature? Would be silly if we can edit a gameplay video, but not save it locally...
Trimming only and you do it on the console. It saves the clip on the console so you can upload it online from there. That's all.

They have never said anything about saving to external media or connecting to a PC.

I don't know if anyone as said this yet, but by putting online multiplayer as a day one patch means no one at all can be playing online before the official launch.

This might be Sony's way of stamping that sort of thing out.

Vita related question. Don't know if this has been answered yet.

Since the Vita can play most PS4 titles over Remote Play, shouldn't it be possible to use the Vita as a controller on the PS4?

I believe an article came out in March that said that you could not use the vita as a controller. It would be nice though. You can use the vita for remote-play co-op though. This could be a workaround of sorts.

Everything I've seen seems to suggest that when you are connected via Remote Play, the game continues to play on the TV. So, in essence, you can use it as a controller.

Indeed. That is the workaround that I was talking about. There may be an option for the vita to be a controller for the PS4 going forward, but we only know what can be done via remote play currently.

It'd be kinda silly though. Two people playing the same game on the same couch. One is using the TV, but the other has to use wi-fi to connect their Vita to their PS4 halfway across town, so he/she can join the game that's being played right in front of him/her.

No word if they're going to allow people to do an USB update? Perhaps releasing it on advance or something, but I find it unlikely or people will rage about having to buy a USB stick. :p

They can connect to the local PS4 and play together
