Xbox One supports PlayTo streaming from your PC (via DLNA)

I saw this picture posted in the Xbox UI thread by GribbleGrunger (original source is Septic):

PlayTo is one of the ways you can currently stream your movies from your PC to your Xbox 360.

Here's a support FAQ about it for the Xbox 360 for reference: http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/playto/playto-setup

Requirements

The most recent software update for your Xbox 360
A Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA)-compatible device such as a PC running Windows
A local network connection between the Xbox 360 and the DLNA-compatible device
Note The Xbox 360 console plays streaming media only from DLNA-server compatible devices. Some mobile devices, such as tablets and phones support DLNA but only in a client mode and can't share media with an Xbox 360 console.

Supported video file types

Xbox 360 supports the following video file formats:

Windows Media Video (WMV) 7, WMV 8, and WMV 9
  • Maximum resolution of 1920x1080 (1080p).
  • Windows Media Audio Standard or Windows Media Audio Pro audio.
  • WMV content may be Windows Media DRM-protected.
VC-1
  • Maximum resolution of 1920x1080 (1080p).
  • Windows Media Audio Standard or Windows Media Audio Pro audio.
  • VC-1 content may be Windows Media DRM-protected.
MPEG-1 with MPEG-1 layer I or II audio
MPEG-2
  • Maximum resolution of 1920x1080 (1080i).
  • AC-3 or MPEG-1 layer I or II audio.
WMV Image 1 (Photo Story 1 & 2) and WMV Image 2 (Photo Story 3)
H.264/MPEG-4

The following audio formats are supported:

Windows Media Audio (WMA) 7 through WMA 9
  • WMA Standard content may be Windows Media DRM-protected.
WMA Professional
  • WMA Professional content may be Windows Media DRM-protected.
WMA Lossless
  • WMA Lossless content may be Windows Media DRM-protected.
MP3

I assume the media supported list could be different for the Xbox One.

Yep, I saw that. Big, big deal for me. I was pissed when I thought the support wasn't going to be there. Preferred video player is very, very interesting. Gets me thinking.

That's if you want to send a video from your PC to Xbox, I use a NAS so it's useless to me as the Xbox doesn't initiate the playback.

Surely your NAS has DLNA? I know mine does and both 360 and PS3 work fine with it.

And if it's a Linux-based NAS (most are) then you can just install Twonky or something.

Well technically there are things the PS3 can do that the PS4 cannot, so having those features on the 360 may not be a guarantee for the One.
I would be very surprised if the "play to..." feature on X1 wasn't at least at the same level as the 360, though.

I do a lot of video streaming so this is a big deal for me.

You wouldn't be able to browse your media using Xbox, right now in Windows 8 you can right click a file and "Play To" a supported device.

The Xbox One only supports Play To, which means you have to right click the file on your Windows PC and send it to the Xbox, useless for my 300 movies and 2000 TV episodes.
The humble NAS, a common household item.

I myself have 3, my brother jo bob has 12.

Grow up. Just because you can't afford one doesn't mean other people don't have them.

the page and article talks about 360 but the title says one?

I just posted that for reference so that people know what PlayTo is. It's the image that confirms PlayTo is supported. And if PlayTo is supported, it also supports some form of DLNA since thats what PlayTo uses

It doesn't have client support so you can't connect to a DLNA server from the Xbox, you can only stream files from the PC if you right click the file and send to.

Yes, the lack of PS4 media abilities is an absolute deal breaker for me and mega surprising. I was almost as shocked as when i found out you can't play online multi-player on the PS4 without a PSN plus sub.

XBOX one or bust it seems...probably wait till next year, not confident in any of these Next Gen consoles at the mo.

The 360 supports that same thing. The video player option is most interesting, as that's likely how we will get the kind of control we desire. I doubt this means that we only ever get play to version of streaming.

Good. I don't use DLNA for media streaming, but I still can't get my head around the fact the Sony didn't bother to include that basic functionality.

I thought it was Steam-machine-like streaming. Left disappointed.

What's the point of film streaming from a PC? Couldn't they just add the codecs into the console? It feels like a waste of resources.

hm, no mkv h264 or DTS or even DTS-HD or DD-MA? I´ll stick to my HTPC instead, not that I was going to buy a xbone, I´ll be sticking to PCU this gen.

Pft..... Such little file support..... What a waste, so glad I bought a home media server last night.

I don't expect the Xbox one to supporta ton more.

I don't see how it's any better considering you can't interface the collection from Xbox itself.

I read this at first as Streaming from the PC to the Xbox for Games - which would be awesome.

Was a little disappointed when reading that it wasn't what I thought but still pretty good!

Thread title needs to describe situation better...
How? PlayTo works via DLNA. SO there are no lies or inaccuracies in the thread title.

If the Xbox One supports PlayTo it wouldn't be stretching it to say that DLNA is most likely also supported.

NAS devices should work with PlayTo. DLNA specifies a 3 box model where you use a controller to browse media on a separate server and instruct a renderer to play it. Same mechanism that Windows Media Player uses for PlayTo from the renderer (in this case Xbox One) pov.

Can't wait to stream content from my Lumia 920 and my Computer to my future One. I already do it with the 360 and its amazing to just walk in the door, turn on the console and press play on the phone.

And now I wont even need to walk up to the console to turn it on ^.^

The same PS+ that drowns you in free games on PS4, PS3 and Vita? Such a big deal.

Yeah, playto support was already confirmed.

I can totally live with that as for me play to >>>> any media server solution.

I also like the preferred media player settings. VLC metro for Xbone, here I come!
Call me when they announce mkv h264 dts aac support.

That depends on the player that sends the play to.

I'm not sure I ever tried with a dts video, but there are players on the windows store that can send mkv video to 360 and it plays amazingly well.

Please, not this. Something I don't want at no cost does not balance something I want at a cost. I could charge you for soda and give you doughnuts for free, and that would mean nothing unless you want to eat doughnuts.

I'm in the same boat as you, I have a meebox, which is a really basic (and crap) NAS, it has a DLNA server on it, but it flat out doesn't work. What I currently do is use it as a network share, and play movies from it via XBMC on a raspberry pi.

Going forward into the next gen, there are two options for me, which I believe will effect your situation also. Firstly, I can use my surface to "play to" my xbox one, via the file share. This will basically mean I have a tablet remote control interface of effect, kind of cool solution, but it depends on you having a tablet (although I think some phones support it). Secondly, and this is speculative but I think likely, VideoLan are currently running a kickstarter (and quite far through it) to bring VLC to Windows 8, Windows RT and Windows Phone 8. It's safe to assume that they will try push this to the Xbox One store as well, I'm not quite sure of the relation between Windows 8 store and Xbox Store, but I'm hoping they'll be the same thing, if they are, VLC will be present on Xbox One and you should be able to open files on a file share via VLC?

Personally I'm excited by the media playback potential of the Xbox One, I was disappointed by the limitations on the 360 playback, but hopefully it will be a lot more comprehensive on the Xbox One, and hopefully I can retire my trusty pi.

I believe that is because the player decodes the media and re-encodes to a standard that the 360 can play on the fly. It is not the same quality. That's like saying upscaled 720p is as good as 1080p.

Regardless, I have an HTPC running XBMC and network storage to complement it, so I need nothing from the 360/Bone wrt media capabilities. That takes me one step closer to PS4 tbh.

I believe there are some transcoding to, but I can't tell the difference in picture quality when comparing with the notebook playing the same file hooked on the tv.

However, I'm sure that this won't be the only way to get media on xbone. The settings show that you can choose a default video player... It shouldn't be long until we have players with networking capabilities and anything in place to play mkv videos on their own.

Holy crap, I was wondering what that might be for, but this certainly confirms a 3rd party app store right? Can't wait for the inevitable Plex client. Nom nom nom.

if you have a smartphone, you can use Twonky to initiate playback with a DLNA compliant Server and Viewer.

like giving a tub of Tabasco to someone dying of thirst... surely they can make do with it.

Ok I'm confused with all this streaming stuff. Currently I use TVersity on my PC to stream all my videos to my 360. Would I still be able to use this same method on XB1? or do I need this PlayTo software instead?

Also yeah I can't believe PS4 doesnt have video streaming from launch when everything including my shoe has it these days?
