PS4 can't play MP3, Music Unlimited needed for background music [Up:Yoshida responds]

You honestly believe that they didn't have time to implement MP3 streaming, but for some reason, did have time to implement their subscription based music streaming service?

Okay.

Of course they had the time. They wanted to push music unlimited.

But if the backlash is strong enough to make them turn around, I'm happy.

I always thought the PS3 was a good MP3 player. Sound quality was top notch to me. Would be a shame for the PS4 not to have this at some point in the enar future.

Not just GAF, word's gotten out and will spread even more post launch. So yes, I'm confident it'll be changed at some point. This was clearly an attempt to sell their music service, but I think the backlash will force them to reverse it. And my assessment still stands.

Way more believable than "not enogh time".

Call me paranoid or whatever but I can´t help to somewhat think this is all in their marketing plan/strategy.

To first announce this cause they KNOW ppl would be upset, and then solve it to show goodwill.

The guys that handles this kind of stuff up there at the top are not stupid.
I'd be happy if it was...custom background, music playback affect me personally, but I hope my streaming gamers get what they want to.

Play your games all day Sony, I don't care if its PR tricks or not. Just bring in the features.

btw--why is Music Unlimited purely a streaming source. I would think with the popularity of Playstation Sony would make something like Itunes where you can buy digital albums/songs. I don't want to stream things all the time since I'm not always connected.

PSN store (SEN) has games/movies section, then you have Music Unlimited/Video Unlimited, which both look pretty but don't function that well. Gaikai is coming out. Sony really needs to leverage these things already into a more cohesive interface. Gaikai powered PS store should be the center of everything.

What? Standard features like mp3 playback? Srsly doubt that.
I'm not saying it's not a glaring omission, lol but even standard features take time to develop. It's not "well go grab a couple of boxes of MP3 support from Best Buy and put that shit in there!!!"

apply occam's razor to those two possibilities. Isn't it more likely that they simply didn't have time to put it in? It isn't just the codec support, they'd need a database, trawl the metadata, UI to navigate - a proper little player. Maybe they just didn't have time to squeeze it in.

Saying they wanted to push their service is a little too conspiracy theory. In that case, why does PS3 have netflix etc when they also have their own video store? and pushing a sony music service means people can't play their Sony Music CDs that they have ripped. there is no logical reason to exclude it other than cost (and that seemed enough for Nintendo..). Maybe when they add it you'll need to activate it online like with the DVD/bluray feature so they can cover the license fees?

Sure, we´re mostly in agreement here. It´s fun to speculate, but it´s probably a question of resource allocation like you said.

Devlop? Well, sort of. They can easily use existing libs for decoding. It wasn't a feature they wanted with unknown reason to us.

You can put songs in playlists and make them available offline.

Professional software development for several million devices is a little bit more complicated than simply using a lib.

I think the impressive thing about Shu is that he is fairly open to discussion whereas certain other individuals for other corporations are not. This time around I suspect he actually knew the answers beforehand but waited to see the general response to the situation. I do have hope they will patch certain things in to the system, if the PS4 can end up being a better (more open) multimedia device than the PS3 remains to be seen. Hopefully it can.

btw--I know when I play around with open source distros MP3 playback is usually something I had to tinker with to enable.

Couldn't Sony just support free codecs like OGG or AFAC or whatever initially? and bring MP3 in a firmware update?

Didn't Carmack completely rewrite Doom 3's sound engine in a number of weeks? No excuses.

yeah i figured that...Google Music lets me do that as well. But Google lets you upload your own collection and make playlist available offline or not, Can you do this with MU? either way, doesn't artist get a percentage of money if I buy there album off Itunes? I would think Sony should be in a great position to do this. The have a ton of entertainment properties.

That big shot movie guy came out on stage I think during E3, so I know there are planning something. Eager to see its fruits.

Remember when he joked about DRM (some game) being on Vita before E3 Megatons where delivered? As I already knew back then, Shu is a very smart man and he isn't just tweeting away mindlessly, I was very hopeful that we wouldn't get DRM on PS4 and look what happened.

CoD being 1080p on PS4? "Let Activision confirm it", well that sounds like a confirmation to me and yes it was.

I'm sure there are many more examples that I don't remember right now, maybe I'll search some more later...

Now he says he talked about MP3 and DLNA with the PS4 dev team and that tells me, that there is a pretty good chance It'll be implemented in the (near) future. There's weight behind his Tweets, they aren't just empty shells like with so many other official dudes.

Of course it is, still this is a "small" thing to implement. Not talking about DLNA, mp3-playback.

The addition of mp3 playback can be made without a problem. Just write an additional app.

It's not like the framework for streaming music isn't there.

OK, that's completely wrong. While I think they did it for their music service the reality is that even a tiny change in a program or worse an OS can create humongous bugs so it has to be extensively tested.

Major lol on the timing of the contest.

To be fair, this contest was obviously concocted prior to the uproar of the MP3 exclusion.

They're obviously going to run the course with this move first.

Oh, no doubt. I mean there is no indication of any change at all from them at the moment.

Shu is not the person in charge of these things, so obviously he can't make the decision to include MP3.

We'll see, hopefully soon, if there's any official response from Sony in regards to additional post-launch features.

Yeah, they're listening, right guys?

Shu is listening, Sony is to be determined at a later date. But of course, Sony must respond with a definitive reply within 24 hours of a GAF complaint thread or clearly they're not doing anything about it.

Realtalk: this just reinforces that they left out MP3 intentionally to push their music service, which is shitty. But you're stupid to think they're going to stop everything within a day of receiving complaints. This was planned out.

Or .... I could just ... you know listen to the stuff I legally bought over the past several years and actually OWN.

I dont like streaming services and I'm not willing to pay for something I have no real control over. This decision is one of the worst they could have done for me. Why is it so hard to play your own music when playing games on a console.
It already sucks that I cant play racing games without my own music, let alone GTA V and I really hoped that would change with "next gen".

Oh well, could thing I switched to the master race PC ;)

No, but seriously I hope they change that.

Considering that PS4 can't even play BR/DVD movies at launch without the 1.5 patch I could almost believe that non-gaming/non-app related media shit on PS4 is just a secondary concern at this point... but if that is the case, why not just say so? They've been pretty forthcoming about most other stuff regarding this console and it's creation.

ANSWERS, dammit!

Yeah, referring mostly to the very hopeful and optimistic posts in the thread :)

One big reason - Sony Music. Probably the reason it doesn't have an MP3 player in too (that or Sony's customer research and usage data show that the vast majority of PS3 80m owners don't use it's MP3 playback facilities and made a decision not to include it - a possibility that no-one on the thread seems to have considered).

This wouldn't be the first time that a Sony product has been hampered in some way by another of it's divisions sticking their oar in to protect their turf.

Even if we give them the benefit of the doubt that MP3 is coming post-launch, I don't think they'll make an official announcement until after launch, while they track to see if there's any uptake in Music Unlimited first.

Announcing MP3 support now would have a negative impact of MU subscription.

So you're just being an asshole and spiting people who have faith that MP3 will be patched in at a later date.

no hes being realistic
ms gets flak for everything they do so why should sony get a free pass ?

yoshidas response is just damage control. nothing will happen for a few months. mp3 support will be patched in but in a very limiting way like you cant listen to your tracks in games or on the dashboard. only in some kind of app.

Sony if you want people to subscribe to MU, you need a billion things to happen. Here are a couple:

1. Better song selection
2. Better price

Honestly at this point I may not use MU on principle because it's really the barrier to MP3 support.

Sony's not getting a free pass, leaving out MP3 is a shit move and I'll complain right along with all of you until it's fixed. But stamping out people who say they have hope it'll be fixed? That's just being a dick. "MS gets shat on so Sony should too just because!" is an equally shitty reason to shit on people here. MS has nothing to do with this.

Realistic =/= being a sarcastic asshole/dick/jerk/spiteful-person.

Every device in the history of ever technically only plays mp3 files in "some kind of app". And why do you think the patched in mp3 support will be very limited and not work in games for example? You realize they patched trophies in and those work with third party games?

Hopefully Shu isn't playing around with us. If I move into a condo, less things need to be connected to my TV and I was planning on using the PS4 as a DLNA client (and a hopeful release of Vita TV for my small bedroom TV).

Question. Are there any on demand video services on the either Sony or Microsoft's platforms that let you purchase content within the app? Netflix and Hulu are subscription services that you sign up for on a PC and Amazon Instant Video doesn't let you rent movies from within the app. At least on 360 it doesn't, and when it launched on PS3 you couldn't either. Is this purely because those companies don't want to pay an in-app purchase fee or do Sony and Microsoft not allow it?

EDIT: Oh wait there is VUDU which i'm pretty sure you can buy things on.
