So Target shipped someone an Xbox One already? [Update: console-banned until launch]

Wouldn't it have made more sense to have screen saying "this console can't go online until x date" instead of "this console is banned".

Its great that an MS person told Engadget that this is a temp thing, but how is average Joe/Johanna meant to know this when they get a console early and get hit with a "this console is banned" message.

It's people like these that MS needs to worry about. The first banned guy was a hardcore XBox fan, and knew he might get taken offline (or at least, he was warned it would happen). He's not going anywhere.

But the father and son seemed confused as to why they got the banned message. And there was 200+ consoles sent out early? I suspect most of them will try to connect (who wouldn't) and see the banned message. MS needs to change that message ASAP.

FYI - I have no problem MS denying Live service until the 22nd, just the way they're informing their customers that things aren't quite ready yet.

Yes? In what way is this a response to me?

The guy I responded to seemed to think they found out who should have access to the consoles by spying on them with the help of NSA through the Kinect camera and I called out his bullshit.

EDIT: I see it was targeted at the guy that I quoted.

Whoa, I wasn't attacking you - I was trying to add to your list saying MS had an update on who was getting banned :)

Nothing about the NSA

so lets say WoWs new expansion is supposed to be released on may25 but you somehow get the disc on the 20th would you show this same uproar then? The game ain't gona be live even though you already have your copy.

shhhh, stop with your obvious logic.

They really do need to change that "Console is banned" message, if only for the next 2 weeks. That or put something on the Xbox.com homepage about this.

Major Nelson kind of turned me off how he did Joe in the interview at E3 but he is winning a little of my respect back.

Couldn't they just say access blocked to Live until launch? Just being a bit more clear would have solved a lot. The vague console ban message is just so silly in this case.

If I spent a billion on R&D, Marketing, and Production and my online services were not quite ready. No way would I allow a guy you tubing everything get ahead of my main marketing, if something goes wrong it may go viral.

No issues with ban. Rather angry nerds that live in delusion be mad than angry delusional nerds over react to a potential prerelease bug.

I was trying to be diplomatic, to be nice.

You're not going to push me into saying anything MS did here is at all fair or right. It was still complete and utter BS and again they are trying to retroactively spin it.

Plenty of developers and gaming press are online (his video showed hundreds) - a few retail consumers seeing things isn't going to compromise anything.

im not pushing anything. All I said is that is understandable.
there's nothing good or bad to see here.

they probably were not ready for this. This is the baked system message.

Yeah, if there one main thing Major could do, its get the message adjusted.

I'm not sure they should remove the whole "this console Is banned message" as this most likely the default standard message for all locked out consoles.

Instead they just need to adjust it to have an extra message at the bottom (in bold or quite big) that states, "If your on an Xbox One, you will be able to access live again/be unbanned on 22nd Nov".

Except in this case XBL was live and apparently functional.

If these people really wanted to make some cash they should break the system on camera and put it on YouTube. I'm sure someone destroying an Xbox One or PS4 before launch with a sledge hammer would get at least a million views.

  • Spend billions of dollars on launch and not have a plan for inevitable early access. Check!
  • Remove any unboxing videos from Youtube that aren't officially approved unboxing video. Check!
  • Ban, then blame customer... better yet insult them. Check!

If you're trying to make Microsoft look good in comparison to what you'd do, you're, uh... actually you did. Kudos.

Maybe I've missed something, but how did they insult him?

I have to say I have been in the X1 wagon from day one but after seeing this none sense console ban it's starting to upset me and I'm about to cancel my pre-order and go to the blue team.

Yeah probably. Is is that hard to change, at least to make people not worried they paid $500 for nothing.

probably a prebaked message that is stored locally. Gona write a patch get it certified all the while you have people who are not under NDA poking around your unfinished online service 2 weeks before release.

it could have been handled differently but maybe the tools were not available. Maybe they thought the consoles were stolen who knows. The info from target was not present then.

right now we know these people will simply not be able to hit live till closer to release.

I don't really like the fact you need to have a cable box pluggin in, on, and inputted through the xbox, defeats the 'one' box purpose. I hope AT&T releases a free U-Verse App that connects to your Cable network through ethernet.

"Xbox Live will be available November 22nd. Please try again later, and enjoy Xbox One!"

Nice and easy.

Putting a message like this in the system makes no sense if you don't ever except to have anyone using it before the 22nd. Clearly this was the closest thing they could do to prevent consoles from connecting until the services were ready for prime time.

Naturally, the internet loves a good drama so it gets blown way out of proportion

Amazing that we're in this situation where you can buy a product and be banned for trying to use it. MS wonders why people reacted to their initial XBONE policies?

It's good they're trying to sort the guy out, but the instal reaction by MS to go straight for the jugular was disgusting.

It makes it even more messed up in my opinion. It's basically banning someone to keep them quiet about live as a precaution so that nothing negative can be said (if any can be).

No it's not.

The consumer-facing product isn't ready for consumers so they want to keep it hidden from consumers until it's ready. That's not unreasonable at all.
