Killzone Shadow Fall Review Thread

Seems like a good game which showcases the PS4 power. Most of the scores are 8s.
It's still just a launch title. COD Ghosts had a similar reception and it's not like BF4 got universal praise either.
Maybe (finally?) reviewers are not falling for the launch hype.

Yesterday, people told me I was overthinking things when reviewers were talking about a new PDZ on Twitter. "It's not Killzone" you said. It'll be fine, you said!

Fuck, I took the shrinkwrap off it. Goddamn it, next-gen hype.

Insane For Sony
So, mixed reviews, but not too bad. I read some of the negative reviews focusing a lot on how difficult the game is. I guess the lack of balance is par for the course for a launch game, so I might just play it on easy. Although, at times I thought KZ3 was too punishing as well, but then realized that it's only really like that because I was stong-headedly trying to refine 'my way' of passing through the sections instead of trying something different.

Who do you trust?

Giant Bomb is probably the only big name website I trust for game review. Hopefully I haven't just missed someone posting otherwise I'm stupid. I will also be looking for Jim Sterling's inevitable review, considering he will definitely rip it apart if it sucks, considering how hyped he is for it.

I will also be more interested in opinions of people that actually play the game rather than websites that could easily, and are quite possibly, moneyhatted.

This. Toss polygon and the toronto newspaper (game was too hard!) and its pushing 80 on metacritic.

Game reviews are like indie movie reviews, totally incapable of being consistent or really making a recommnendation for what any individual should get.

Except when you figure in the fact that nearly every uninspired FPS shooter except Ghost scored higher than this game, then this game looks like shit for anyone other than an enthusiast in the genre.

And let's be honest, who isnt' at least a little burnt out on the genre by this point?

You could play it before being disappointed in it. That's generally what I do but I guess I'm weird.

Cliche ridden FPS that punctuates shooting galleries with set-piece explosions and sprints and visual spectacle?

God damnit.

Toss another one on the pile fellas. My expectations were on the low end, but obviously not quite low enough.

That's essentially what an average game is though. The majority of games released hover around the 8.0 mark, with great games being in the 9.0s.
This is my problem. A lot of reviews' text reads as average but they score it an 8. Polygons score matches the review and OH SHIT CONSPIRACY. Don't care either way, but at least have the score match the written content.

I remember Resistance: FoM getting very similar reviews and that was one of my favorite multiplayer experiences on the PS3. So like many have said, not getting really worked up over the reviews, just looking forward to playing the game.

Ha, not surprised to see some reviewers shit on Killzone. What does surprise me is that people still trust this media's opinions on games.

This. About the only thing I look forward to with regard to game reviews anymore is that I get to see a bunch of video from the game. I largely ignore the actual "review" part unless scores are extremely low across the board. That's the only scenario that gets my attention any more.

Well, this is a bit disappointing. I was actually pretty sure KZ:SF was going to be THE launch title. Still interested to see the tech at work but I was really hoping they'd nail the SP this time around.

Yea when your funded by Microsoft & all the PS games u review come in at least 2 points below their average, it does look like you're site is being nefarious

I think we can summarize most of the reviews by saying KZ:SF is a very solid experience overall that improves from its predecessors by opening up and going in a new direction. I'm happy with this. As never having played the previous entries, my expectations were met. I never thought it would reach a 9 and that's OK with me.

Don't really care about review scores myself, but those claiming bias on polygon's part maybe wrong maybe right, I'd wait to see what score he gives Ryse. If Killzone is unoriginal but pretty, a cut and paste hack and slash with pretty graphics should get a similar score.

5 is an absolutely insane score dripping in agenda.

6 was already a fairly absurd score for Mercenaries earlier this year, but well what can you do.

Always enjoyed the KZ games, never really gotten the blowback on them (other than 3's far too fucked-with MP compared to 2's perfection) when most media outlets dont have the balls to give COD the same treatment in kind.

Hahahaha. I'm sorry but COD multiplayer is far far far superior to KZ2's shitty multiplayer. "Perfection". LOL. Now I've seen everything.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a review that actually goes in-depth with the multiplayer. Gunplay, map design, customizable warzone options, challenges, ect. It seems most these reviews are heavily focused on the SP while the MP is regulated to a small paragraph at the bottom. I am more interested in the part of the game that I will invest 100+ hours in than the story I will play once.

I think it'll be a blast to play. I'm not sure why people would have hopes that this was a masterpiece and was going to get high 9's and 10's...

There are none. Going to have to wait on Gaffers.

Best Killzone game? Looks like it.

Can't see how you can properly review it though if all the mp reviewers have played is sessions using dev-kits at GG's offices.

Sounds like a mediocre launch FPS.

We need a "Che" to give it a 9 or higher for a proper Perfect Dark: Zero callback.

that's a little bit of revisionist history eh?

This thread is a perfect example of why I don't pay attention to reviews from games media, and why I wait for the gaming community to play games to get a better perspective when I am unsure of a game.

Looks like I made the right choice to play/try all the free games on PSN before deciding what retail games to get, even though I enjoyed the Killzone games and will probably pick up SF. Driveclub was my most anticipated game and even that was going to be a try before I buy. With plus and the ftp games there is no need to rush out to buy any retail games.

Also, lol polygon.

"There is no doubt, Killzone: Shadow Fall is indeed the most attractive game line-up to launch the PS4: not only is it a technical success, but it is also a great lesson successful and clever level design scenario. If the solo is flamboyant, the multiplayer is a bit more classic but it remains very well made. In short, Guerrilla puts the bar at the launch of the PS4 and hopefully soon find other titles of this caliber on the Sony console."

I am sure you can back your statement up with details on why it is "far far far superior" and why KZ2 is "shitty".

I pretty much put zero stock into game reviews. I look forward to gamer impressions. I loved Killzone 3 though so I'm buying it no matter what regardless.
