Killzone Shadow Fall Review Thread

Well, I won't be playing this or any other new FPS, but according to metacritic COD:G is better than this. Can it really be? I can't think of a more tired game than COD.

That said, I always thought that Killzone was such a horrible name and just put you in the worst mindset when coming at this game. But, I did enjoy KZ2 quite a bit.
READ the reviews. If you liked KZ2, I'm guessing there's a good chance you'll like this too, depending on what you liked about KZ2.

Well, he's a real reviewer so now I'm disappointed to hear about the campaign. Hopefully the multiplayer is good, since I probably wasn't going to play the campaign for more than an hour anyway.

I'll be honest, I kind of expected a mediocre game and only really bought this as a graphics showpiece.

That said, I'll read any review before Polygon.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Ridiculous that he reviewed the game when he clearly isn't a fan.

See, I think there are cases where someone that doesn't like a franchise can be turned around (This is the Killzone for Killzone Haters!! (aka Mercenary)) and would never say normally that a reviewer shouldnt be given a chance to be that guinea pig. Arthur though is a special case where he is bullish and proud of his ability to double down on a viewpoint that exists outside of reality to such an extent, if he was already wishing the franchise was dead back in February, just what value is there at all in him reviewing it at all?

But then thats the fruitlessness of reviews in general. I'm going to take more away from messageboard posts of people that liked K2 and where they feel this title lies.

I'd also agree with people that say some media can't get past the terrible name of the series. It is terribly generic, and also the entire franchise was coloured by its failure to be (absurdly) a "Halo Killer". Halo was the golden child, especially in the press during that X360 Honeymoon era, so Killzone has often been seen by many as an affront in physical disc form. Tack on CGI-gate as well, and you have a nice neat bag of shitbricks to throw at its head whenever its name is raised.

Be a long time til I get my time with the game tho, sometime next year, but I'm curious where it'll fall for me personally with K2>Mercenary>>>>K3.

Honestly, what kind of man says something like that, then never follows through with it? I mean, does he have no honour? It's $10.

He should be more ashamed of this, than any review score or stupid thing he said online.

Ya'll are hating on Gies, but man this GB quicklook isn't doing this game any favors. They all seem super down on it.

Blech. Wish it were better, but it'll be a nice graphics showcase for my quattro.

Yeah it looked boring in that quick look. I was hoping they would be able to pull off making a less linear Killzone game ,but it seems like they only went halfway and it just makes the game more boring than the previous titles in the series. I'm still going to be playing it at launch though.

Its Gies he wants to work at MS so bad he is willing to look like a complete fool in order to get there.

I'm sure Arthur "I make up my mind about games before a second of footage is shown" Gies gave it a fair shake though.

Let's be honest, we were all thinking this back in February. We all wanted to see new IPs. At least GG is still working on a new IP.

So it's an average at best game apparently.

If you ignore all the positive reviews, sure.

Every single review thread I've seen turns into a damned mess whenever a negative review appears. Why does the whole discussion suddenly switch focus to just the negative reviews when there are also positive ones? Why do some people treat negative opinions with more weight than positive ones almost to a point of ignorance? It's crazy to see people making blanket statements about the game being poor when we've also got really positive reviews in the mix as well.

Here's what I'm trying to say expressed better by Jim Sterling (bare in mind this is focused on Dragon's Crown, but it applies here as well):
Dragon's Frown (Jimquisition)
Jim Sterling said:
(If I were a developer of a game) I'd feel that my game was being undermined and insulted by the sudden derailing of good press so that the bad press could explode and get a disproportionate amount of publicity.

[...]

Discussion about the game itself, about it's merits, about its good critical acclaim, have all been fucking drowned out by the endless talk about one review that didn't like it.

-

Off-topic, but I'm guessing the embargo lifting is the thing making Gaf crash a lot? Had a bit of trouble actually getting on here.

Sad to hear about the campaign being just decent but the multi-player got some positive impressions. I wonder if they'd consider splitting them up and just putting the MP part of the game on the store for us to buy.

I dunno, I've enjoyed them a lot more than some of the more popular series (Call of Duty for instance).

The Crysis series gets a lot of shit too but it's one of my favorite series of the past generation.

Crysis > Killzone though

No just no. Go have a look at the best fps of this generation thread on GAF. Like I said, many people regard KZ2 as the best fps of this generation. Just because many people didn't buy it or didn't give the MP much of a chance, doesn't make it mediocre. The multiplayer in that game was nothing shy of sheer magnificence.

These reviews barely had time with or barely mention the multiplayer in Shadow Fall, so perhaps the main facet of this game is either being glossed over or barely been given much importance.

As has been mentioned before, KZ2 was the exception not the rule.

Also, I feel KZ2 is pretty overrated on the internet. The game has its fair share of flaws that it gets a pass on because of "oooh pretty graphics".

Some of the flaws of KZ2, just in my opinion: the gunplay isn't up to par with the other AAA shooters on the market, the game is fairly shallow, the story is bad, the characters are generally unlikable, the game is very linear, the difficulty is all over the place.

I did enjoy the little multiplayer I played, but that brings up another point, I'm primarily a singleplayer guy, so all these flaws are magnified for me.

I certainly wouldn't miss GG or the Killzone series if either just magically vanished one day.

So it's being reported that the levels after the first areas sort of just go back to more limited, corridor-style level design.I really dislike the amount of pop-in, and hearing how the frame-rate variation effects controller responsiveness is sort of a bummer. I ran into frustration in that regard playing Enslaved not too long ago.

Also, KZ3 is a better game than KZ2. Step.

The quicklook is pretty awful. Jeff playing like shit, not paying attention to anything. Brad saying he's played it one moment and asking the most absurd questions the next.

So silly.

Arthur Gies, ladies and gentlemen. One of the shittiest writers in the industry with a clear bias. This is why 'professional game reviews' are fuckin trash. They're just a bunch of fanboys that get free toys and are no more impartial/professional than us non-professional enthusiasts.

I'd say it's a shame that they get paid to do this, but the majority of them (like Gies) make so little money that they can't help but be attached to the teat of major publishers and hardware manufacturers.

If defense of Gies, well ish. Well not really but heh;

I assume that tweet was during the meeting and he was just blabbing his thoughts, well Giantbomb echoed his thoughts at the same moment.

To be clear I am not defending Gies, or saying GB are in the same boat obviously. But interesting nonetheless.

Anyways, I think the reviews are disappointing. If they are fair, we shall see when we all get a chance to play the game ourselves.

It is the 3rd lowest Killzone game on metacritic, with only Killzone 1 and Killzone HD being lower than it.

Reading the reviews overall, it seems like it is a really good game with a few disagreeing opinions.

This is starting to get a little silly and downright stupid... you have a game that is getting some fairly strong reviews (9's), a lot of great reviews (8's), a few good reviews (7's), a few average reviews (6's) and a couple bad reviews (5's) and yet 90% of this thread is tension created by people crying and bitching and mocking one another and the game over one particularly bad review. It is rather disingenuous and creates a false impression that the game is complete garbage, especially if someone just casually views the thread and doesn't see or read the second post of the thread where the are positive reviews and opinions, of which the amount are greater than those saying it is bad.

I mean, since when did games reviewed at a 7s or 8s become average or even crap as some put it? It makes me wonder and start to realize why mid-sized, smaller budget, not quite AAA games have a tough time surviving or being successful. If the reviews can't all be 9 out of 10 or 5 out of 5 or greater people say they suck and they skip it! I don't remember it being like this in the era of the PlayStation 2...

The value I get from reviews stems from how consistent they are in their explanation so I know what to expect.

I think that based off of what I've gathered from a handful of reviews I've skimmed through and listened to, Killzone's Campaign is going to be disappointing overall because it had so much potential that it didn't capialize on when it came to the open ended gameplay and that the story/characters are still not impressive.

The most important thing here, is the gameplay is going to be straightforward and amazing thanks to not so call of duty like structure. Killzone Shadow Fall is going to be a great pick up and play multiplayer that looks gorgeous and has impressive gun play.

Stopped reading there.

If there are any complaints about the Killzone franchise, the gunplay is NOT one of them.

Well if you read the actual text of the reviews the complaints are enough to take the wind out of your sails.

Fuck the numbers. If anything some of them seem inflated considering the negatives raised.

Based on a few reviews that say its much like previous Killzone's, especially with multiplayer, but prettier.

I don't think I've read anywhere that this is a step back from previous Killzone's. So at the very least, it seems that people that are already Killzone fans can be reasonably confident.

Of course, with multiplayer, nobody has gotten a great idea yet. It normally takes quite a while and lots of players before balancing issues, map design and whatnot really get tested properly. So if you're a multiplayer-focused Killzone player, you're probably just gonna have to make the dive or wait a month or two for user impressions.

In going through a lot of the reviews it sounds like a lot of the strong points of the series (gunplay and AI) are still intact as well as the weaknesses (writing, voice acting, sometimes obtuse design). Doesn't sound like this'll change anyone's mind about the series but Killzone fans should dig it. I was just hoping they had stepped up their game more.

So it's being reported that the levels after the first areas sort of just go back to more limited, corridor-style level design.
If what you're saying is true it sounds like they had to hurry up and get it done for launch so they made the levels after the first few open ones a corridor-style.

Anyone read the Toronto Sun review...check out this quote...

"here’s a handy metaphor for Killzone: Shadow Fall’s ending: Imagine finishing a meal in a restaurant, and then for dessert having the chef drop his pants and take a huge, steaming turd on your plate. I don’t care how good dinner was – and in this case, it wasn’t anything to call the Michelin Guide folks about – but when the very last thing you’re served is easily the worst part of the entire experience, it can’t help but leave a lingering bad taste. "

Ugh my hype train for next-gen has been derailed this morning, then taken out back doused in kerosene, lite on fire and shot

guess I'll be playing a lot of BF4 on my PS4 then

will still play KZ but sounds disappointing

Is this guy on the Polygon stream right now serious? Not Arthur, the other one. It sounds like he's never played a video game before.

As I mentioned, it's just my opinion, I don't have as much fun shooting baddies in KZ games as I do in other FPSs.

For most sites a 7 is average. I wish more reviews would follow their site's review guide closer. For most sites a 5 is supposed to be average or boring. While I may think that Polygon's review of K:SF is maybe low balling it a bit, it's good to see a differentiation in scores instead of the constant 7's for average games.

whats weird is that Killzone 2 and 3 both got pretty darn good reviews across the board,

so i dunno wtf Guerrilla did this with one

When this game first was debut at the reveal I was watching a lot of the coverage from the various sites and the general sentiment from the gaming media was "not another killzone" /rollseyes so a lot of these reviews even down to the review text are exactly what I expected. Reviewers just dont like this series at all.

A lot of gamers don't either. It's not exactly one of Sony's killer first-party franchises. I've personally played both KZ1 and KZ2, but KZ2 left such a bad taste in my mouth that I skipped KZ3. There's no question that GG are amazing at making graphically impressive Killzone games, I've just never been a fan of their campaigns. The prospect of a more open, Crysis-like Killzone had me intrigued, but if it just devolves back into a corridor shooter what's the point?

That said, I know there are people who do like KZ multiplayer a lot, so I won't knock them. If you enjoy it, you enjoy it. I don't think you are going to get much out of the multiplayer reviews given that reviewers have had jack all time to play the game for a long time online.

I’m still working my way through the campaign and need to see some proper online multiplayer, but I’m definitely not loving it so far.

And now the thread takes a new turn...

SP Is important but it's a mp that can keep you playing for months. If the mp turns out to be addictive and balanced it could still be a great purchase (especially since Ghosts is disappointing and BF is buggy).

I mainly play campaign in FPS but I'll still get it for next gen experience.

Still interesting that many people claim they don't care one bit about single player in FPS (denial of bad reviews) when they hyped the shit out of this game with single player screenshots and went crazy about how beautiful they were, cant wait for open world, etc.
