California forecasts state budget surplus of $2.4b, surpluses for next 6 years

This is because I spent all my money there in September. Damn Californians with their science museums and delicious wine!

Yes, I do recommend combining the two.
 
So is this due to austerity?

I learned in a federal deficit thread that these sort of deficit reductions aren't necessarily a good thing, and the explanation as to why made sense.

The expiration of the tax rates for the wealthy (the jump from 35 to 39.6 on income above 450k and a 5% bump in capital gains) are in effect from Jan 1 this year.
 
Now put it back where you cut services like parks, libraries and welfare programs. Oh, and build that HSR faster!! Oh, and more tax credits so Hollywood no longer have to film somewhere else!
 
They still gotta pay back all the debt incurred during the financial collapse, but this is a good direction. Slashing the budget and raising taxes worked, so both sides are both wrong and they are both right.

With that said, I would like more investment into a mass transit infrastructure, since there is a lot of productivity and free time that is lost being stuck in traffic. The population density of the Bay Area and The LA super region from Santa Monica to San Bernardino is some of the most crammed areas in the United States.

Democrats almost NEVER say that absolutely, under no circumstances, should any spending be cut, and the only budget adjustments that need tobe made are tax increases.

Republicans, on the other hand, DO support a pure spending cuts, no new taxes solution.

Don't try to push that false equivalency.

Yes. They also enacted a lot of cuts too. Both tax-cuts and program cuts . . . and boom, balanced budget. If the Feds want to balance the budget, they could do it too. But it is debatable whether having a balanced budget is actually a good idea right now.

Wrong. Only one side advocates this policy. The other side says no tax hikes at all . . . ever.

Caltrain, BART, and the ferry system can be decent options if you work near a station. Otherwise, you're at the mercy of the bus system of a particular area.

california isn't a country with its own currency, yet it's independently supposed to handle its fiscal matters. unfortunately, under these self-imposed circumstances, "balancing teh budget" actually is necessary for states.

That's also assuming that your final destination is somewhere where the transit is good too. As oppossed to a destination in like, Santa Clara/San Jose that kinda area :-/

EDIT: Oh jeez, I misread your post thinking you said "if you leave near a station" rather than "work near a station".

its 3 miles from my office to the closest caltrain station (office is in santa clara). I haven't gotten around to actually riding my bike to the office from the station, but its an option (and taking a bus takes longer then walking the 3 miles, somehow). Its still insane to me that there is no run to the new 49ers stadium from up north (I work right by the stadium)
 
They could probably give another $1 billion to LAUSD so they can buy another set of iPads for their students.

Even though the likelihood of California spending that money right away after they receive it, I really do hope that they use that money to pay off debts and create a reserve.

I'm thinking the forecast accounts for that, since they mention reserves continuing to grow through 2018.

I'm a public education employee and I heard today a word that we haven't heard in 7 years: raise. From what I hear at work we could get a 2% retro raise, 2% more in the following fiscal year and a 1% retro raise that goes back a bit further (although I'm not sure the details on it....). But still... just hearing about a raise is great after all this time.

Jerry Brown is a legendary cheap bastard. And I really like that about him. So I think he'll keep the lid on spending.
 
I'm happy to have voted for and incurred the extra taxation in order to buoy our dear schools. I won't burden everyone with more California pride but I'm happy to have the budget more under control for my drunk arguments with out of state colleagues.

This is what happened pretty much as soon as the CA democrats could legislate without the Republicans being able block legislation. For all the perils of "single party dictatorships" thrown around when one side wins elections so thoroughly, it's still a better outcome than a deeply divided government.
