Gamasutra.
With the Wii U finally having 12 months of sales in the UK, we can finally look back and see how it's done for software for its first full year, and we can also compare it to the launches of the Xbox One and PS4. (Well, ok, pre-launch PS4.)

I wrote about it on Gamasutra, where you can find some tables showing YTD and TTM (trailing twelve month) software figures for all the major platforms.

Here's the units able, for easy reference:

The TTM figure for the Wii U is its LTD software sales figure, because last year its launch fell within the December 2012 retail calendar month. That figure currently stands at 675K.

After just its initial launch on the market, the Xbox One has sold 475K units of software. That comes with a bit of a caveat, however, since GfK Chart-Track has counted the copies of Forza 5 and FIFA 14 bundled in the box -- as digital copies counted as retail software. As far as I can tell, that's been true before for packaged software inside a bundle, but not for digital copies. If you subtract off the 150K copies bundled with day-one systems, then the Xbox One software falls to around 325K -- still a very respectable figure.

And the PlayStation 4, which launched in the December 2013 retail month, and therefore outside of this table's scope, had already sold 75K units to consumers prior to launch. That doesn't include several more days of sales between the end of the November 2013 retail month and the hardware's release, so actual pre-launch software sales could have been much closer to 100K.

I'd also point out the Nintendo 3DS has been taking up some of the sales lost as the Nintendo DS falls into irrelevance, but that total Nintendo software sales are actually down YOY. (Details on that are in the linked blog.)

Comments and questions welcome. Thanks, guys.

So the Xbox one won the next gen wars for the month of November by a substantial amount. PS4 in it's December launch should be interesting, but the Xbox one got a huge head start in the UK.

Xbox One sold more software units in a week than Wii U did all of this year?
Yes, but that counts bundled digital copies of Forza 5 and FIFA 14. So it's not entirely fair -- but that's how GfK Chart-Track reported it.

Shocking News: Wii U owners don't buy games. The 2013 YTD chart is gonna be really telling considering it will be a full 12 months for Wii U vs about one month for PS4/XB1

I had to reread the OP several times before I understood what was going on. God its late.

Anyways...those sure are some numbers. Wonder what PS4's numbers will look like with the launch factored in.

Would it not also likewise count the software bundled with Wii U?
Disc software, yes. Digital software -- it doesn't appear so. They actually gave a statement that suggests this may be a new way of reporting. It's somewhat muddy at the moment.

Thanks for the info as always. I guess if I were the guy in charge of Nintendo in the UK, I'd be fretting.

The Xbone has a respectable software/console ratio.

These are the hardest of the core gamers. I wouldn't be surprised if many of them bought several games at launch, way beyond what most people would consider. That said, it would be fascinating to know how those early adopters are making their digital vs retail buying decisions.

Yeah. I am still kind of stunned by how just about every bit of news about PS4 sales makes me think that. It's wild.

Now if they can keep it up through the cool period in the first half of 2014...that will be something to watch.

Biggest surprise is how bad the 3ds is doing for software.

It pretty much empty every bullet in its chamber this year.

I wonder why the 3DS software sales are so bad.... In all honesty, the average Wii U owner bought like 4 games (UK hardware sales were 150k right?), which isn't terrible for 1 year, is it? It's just that there are so few Wii U owners at all.

What? This is PS4 Pre-launch though. I don't think it has a substantial lead at all. Or any real lead actually.

Unless you were just talking about November itself.

Could be that it's parents who are buying games for their kids and buy those games for their kid as a once or twice yearly treat (as it was for me when I was a kid) :-P If Nintendo's going after the children's demographic then they will have to count on the parents to buy games for their kid, whereas with that T-M demographic it's likely the player himself buying games for himself. That's my theory at least.

Thanks, jvm.

So long PSP and PS2.

PS3 + PS4 + X360 + XBONE = 73% of software units YTD.

But due to the higher ASP, these 4 systems represent 81% of revenue YTD.

360 and PS3 are in a league of their own. It'll be interesting to watch that change over the next 12 months.

PS4 shifting 75k in the fortnight before it was even on shelves is bonkers. I wonder what the number looks like now there are 250,000 of them in customers hands.

The Wii U is selling so badly in the UK, I wouldn't be surprised if that was a good attach rate.

I've not contributed though, my attach rate being all digital and second-hand makes me look like a 1:0 customer. PS4 will be the same, 1:1 since it came with Knack and everything else is digital.

Well it is selling close to 5 times as many software units as it's nearest handheld rival YTD ;)

Speaking of, was quite surprised that Wii U software is actually beating the Vita year to date and trending twelve months.

Also yes 3DS software sales are really mediocre.

The software prices and the lack of a convincing Western support, outside of multi-releases and a few exclusives, hurt 3DS software sales in UK much more than anywhere else in the world. However, there has been some signs of improvements this year there: much more releases helping for sure, but it goes beyond that, with also some niche titles charting. The same article says 3DS software sales are up 33% in November 2013 compared to November 2012 (meaning also 3DS sold 228,570 software units in November 2012). If last year they were really mediocre, I'd say this year they're a little better than mediocre, hopefully next year they'll be "decent" :lol

You know UK doesn't represent the whole world, right? And they obtained to improve the situation in UK (it was the best selling console last Summer, and software sales still improved compared to last year). And that's in currently the worst place for the platform in the world.

I'm very interested in the possible plan for the next handheld in UK, though. Given how it's the country where the platform perform the worse, if I were in them, I'd start wondering myself "What happened with 3DS? What did we do wrong?" and, above all "What should we do in order to fix it the next time?". I'm sure that, fixing the UK problems, they wouldn't only get much better sales there, but also much better sales everywhere else...without forgetting what made the platform good / strong in those other countries, though.

Yes, but that counts bundled digital copies of Forza 5 and FIFA 14. So it's not entirely fair -- but that's how GfK Chart-Track reported it.

Wouldn't they also count the bundled copies of Mario/Luigi and Lego City for Wii U too? Not to mention Nintendoland before Nintendo decided to remove it...

October and November this year had Pokemon to boost the numbers.
