Full Edge Ueda Interview on The Last Guardian

Let's give it another 20 years then. I mean, there will be plenty of other games to play.
"Let's give it" as in?
Are you a Sony investor? Are you paying their rent?

More over, the game has obviously been moved to PS4, even if it was close to ready, they're going to announce it at the right moment, since it is, at this point, a relevant title.

Do deadlines make your work easier or more difficult?

They make work much easier.

That being the case, how did Ico miss PlayStation and The Last Guardian seemingly miss PlayStation 3?

YouÂ’ve wanted to make a game for head-mounted displays since as far back as 2002. How would you use virtual reality to advance your mechanics and themes?

I think there are many ways in which games are superior to other forms of entertainment, but more than anything it is the level of immersion that draws my focus. And what can enhance that sense of immersion better than virtual reality?

Speaking in terms of mechanics, I think, rather than playing as a character that can move around freely, it is best suited to a character with movement that is somehow limited. As soon as Ico was finished, I told my boss at the time that IÂ’d like to make a game that uses a head-mounted display, so now IÂ’d like to research doing that. Also, this may be surprising, but one day IÂ’d like to make a game on the theme of zombies. IÂ’d like to try making a low-threshold game for hardware that is based around a touchpad. ThatÂ’s if I can come up with a well-suited idea, of course. There are many other things, too, but theyÂ’re secret.

Yea... I think he's going to continue with the PS4 as a platform. He also mentions playing around with the oculus rift, and has wanted to create a VR game since 2002. If rumors are true then Sony will also provide that potential to him as well.

Ueda is so slow at doing things that even when he quits Sony he still works for them...

No one has the heart to tell him that he doesn't work there anymore. He just takes long walks though the corridors of Sony Japan Studio playing Candy Crush on his Sony Xperia screaming "Bird dog! BIRD DOG!" whenever he hits a top score.

What? No! Make the game you want to make, not the one you hope you think you know "we" want.

Or am I reading this wrong?
He wants to make a game people will want to play, so he has to think about what people want to play when making the game. He is making the game he wants.

The Last Guardian was never a game. From the beginning, the game was all about waiting for and even defending a game that doesn't exist and will never be released.

You are the last guardian.

It's not dead. They would probably have killed it if the reveal trailer hadn't caused so much impact but they got such a strong reaction that they decided to see it through. Yoshida will not let us down, he'll make sure the game sees the light of day even if it's the last thing he does
and at this rate it might be :)

In the grand scheme of things, I'm happy that TLG has skipped PS3. The console could not do the game justice, it was clear from the trailers.

Everyone wants them to launch when it's finished, but nobody wants to wait for them to launch when it's finished!

Not only did they miss a generation, they missed the longest console generation ever. I want this game more than anyone but no game is worth this long of a wait.

I really don't understand this type of comment it is not like you have to stand in line or you can't play any other games if you are waiting for this game. It is done when it is done. If it is just a good game it is not suddenly a disappointment because they took so long to deliver.

Anyone know what the turnover rate at that studio is? I think it would be hard to spend a decent chunk of your career not actually having any tangible output.

I will never understand Sony giving these guys money for so many years with so little in return.

According to Wiki, they have been in operation since 1997 and have shipped 2 games, WHAT THE F????

Im of course talking in a business point of view, I love Team ICO's games and im glad they exist but why are they allowed to exist while Studio Liverpool gets shut down?

Yeah, I understand the business angle, but from a gamer's perspective, the 2 titles they released are two of the greatest games ever made, imo. That warrants patience with them- albeit probably not from a financial perspective.

No you're not. You're just rationalizing its delay.
I don't really care that it's delayed. I'm not funding the game, and it's not like I didn't have other things to play in the meantime. On the other hand I was immediately worried when I saw that the game assumed not just the sub-720p look but also a crummy framerate when they've showed it with a trailer running on actual PS3. I just hope that the game is good once it comes out, whenever that is.

What a clown. Shouldn't Edge have asked, you know.. when the game is coming?

What kind of director says shit like, "my creative work is done." You're not done until the game is released. Do you not own the overall product? What is "creative work" when you are a director?

He acts like he was done three years ago and Sony is mysteriously screwing him.

This gives me hope that it will come out sometime soon. I'm also happy to hear that he wants to make something amazing that game players want and I like his comment on looking at a great movie or something to help motivate him.

I feel like Sonys output is pretty piss-poor in terms of high quality games. This game could elevate them in a big way.

It sounds like all he is really interested in is the creative process. Making the actual game is someone else's problem.

*Mostly* done. Maybe the game is really almost done and they're just making some engine optimizations or maybe even just waiting for when to announce/release it.

I love Team ICO but I really don't see how any of them still have a job after failing to make at least one title for one of the longest console generations we've ever had.

The exact same way that I read those comments. He seems to be throwing Sony or his team under the bus. "Hey, I'm done. Those other guys are the ones that are slacking!"
