Arrietty (UK dub) was a really enjoyable little film, not a lot *happens*, at least its not so concerned with action as The Borrowers, but I really enjoyed it and think it has a more personal feel to its credit.

also finished watching the Harry Potter films! Only the last one counts as 2014 though, can't really say I enjoyed them as a whole that much. The closer you get to the end the less the films seem concerned with explaining the intricacies of what's happening, and it did all seem quite rushed in the final parts, especially for me cos I haven't read the books. Think the films remain enjoyable mainly due to individual performances (Rickman in particular, though the cast is crazy strong even for minor characters).

I'm of that exact opinion. My wife is a big fan of the books and she had to make up for the huge gaps in the films by explaining to me why such and such an event was important or even happening. The movies become too focused on a handful of massively cool scenes (e.g. the glass shattering battle at the end of Phoenix) and completely lose all sense of pacing and character development. I thought the concept of splitting the final book into two movies was particularly to blame, since it left you with one movie where absolutely nothing happened (something, something horcrux) and another where they rush through a dozen fight scenes to wrap things up nicely. I must be stupid because I still don't understand anyone's proper motives in the last movie.

Good Burger is one of those strange underground cult movies... Strange Undgerground Cult movies are usually not good at all. The movie itself is horrible and I was miserable watching it because of someones suggestion that I respected.

Suzanne Collins - The Hunger Games ★★

Mirrored the movie, really kind of boring. A lot of the inner monologue was pointlessly silly, leaving the book to be equally as 'meh' as the film. Incredibly quick read. Having seen the second movie as well gives me a little hope for the second two novels to be better.

I do like the premise of the novel and the small bit of a world within which the protagonists' live.

Are we doing 4 or 5 star scales?

Most of the four-star rating systems I've seen for films and such include some cheesy "bomb" or "black dot" or "zero" star option, essentially making them five-star systems.

Five stars makes a lot more sense to me, since it adds more gradation without going overboard. It also translates more easily into a 10 or 100 point scale (e.g. three stars = 60%, approximately).

Not everyone included a rating system last year, but I think everyone who did used a five-star system with a half star increment. That gives you 10 different scores to work with.

I'm in the process of finishing up The Quiet American, halfway through Dust (the last book in the Wool trilogy), and about a quarter of the way through Casino Royale. I hope to have all three done by early next week. It's nice to want things.

It does kind of seem like cheating, but I don't know when I'll get the chance to see 50 movies starting grad school this year. It's only 2-3 entries anyway I guess. I also don't know of 50 decent quality movies I'll get the chance to see considering Netflix's crappy selection. I might have use some documentaries.

I rate them around the same as the Harry Potter books. Something that I find oddly intriguing due to an interesting plot or singular world mechanic, but the actual writing itself I find boring and not intriguing. I'm also not too big on the inner monologue writing much of the time, though Pynchon's Bleeding Edge is that type of writing done write (imo, of course). I'm a little over halfway through Bleeding Edge and hoping to finish it tomorrow or so. Alone on Jan 1st means lots of reading .

It's not really that I didn't like it, just that it didn't impress me. I'd recommend it to most people because it's very accessible, the plot/characters are at least somewhat interesting, and there's definitely an interesting premise to be explored within.

Random question popped into my head. Do comedy specials count? They're like an hour... probably not. I don't watch many, but I watched one a week ago so this came up in my mind.

Do new books that I read during your child's bedtime count? this 50 might be easier than I thought if so...

First off, if you're reading a book to my kid during his bedtime then I'm not sure if I should thank you or have you arrested.

Secondly, they almost certainly do not count. My son has an entire library of kid's books that is easily in the hundreds range. Each of those books takes 5-10 minutes maximum to read. Most are under that.

Are you talking things like the Chronicles of Narnia (which would count) or Dr. Seuss (which would not)? Use your judgment here, but if you start counting thinks like "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" and "The Little Engine That Could" as part of your list, that would be quite comical.

For books, it seems like Goodreads is the consensus pick. For movies and games, however, I have stumbled upon probably a dozen different sites and I am having trouble finding consensus. Should I just make a wordpress blog?

I dunno how Reddit convinced you to watch Good Burger...It's not that great of a movie and I watched it when I was 19 with my cousins (who were 19 and 17 at the time) and my older brother aged 21.
None of us enjoyed it but it was the only thing on Christmas morning and were playing Clue while it was going on in the background.

I think with the full year you will have no problem finishing the challenge without counting retreads.

I liked Mumei's approach of keeping a separate mini-list of repeats. I don't imagine I'll have much time to repeat anything from the past and still hit my goal, but for more prolific readers and movie watchers that best keeps with the intent and spirit of the challenge.

personally i don't consider it re-reading/re-watching if i have little to no memory of the thing. it's functionally new, as far as i'm concerned and falls within the spirit of challenge. if i watch blade runner for the upteenth time or re-read something i read in the last couple years obviously i wouldn't count that.

anyway first film

1. blue is the warmest colour - totally amazing coming of age story about a young french lesbian. both incredibly intimate, in bringing you right into everything about this girls life, and sprawling as it examines tons of different issues within her relationship over its three hour running time, without losing focus or realism. the whole thing is grounded by an unforgettable lead performance by adèle exarchopoulos that really makes you care about the character. i don't really understand the constantly recurring blue visual motif, referenced in the title, but i was really sucked into following her life and pretty devastated by the end emotionally.

Doubled? Goodness! Where do you find the time? Though to be fair, I didn't count any film I watched or book I read before July last year. That was my own little quirk. Having decided to start so late.

I watch a lot of movies, and I have a lot of rewatchable films. that being said... a lot of the time i spent watching movies I could have used to get closer to 50 book

Also... I followed the rules to a T. All my numbers were new for the year and with the exception of Dance with Dragons which I was around 30% through before the year start, I didn't use 2012 to catapult my stats. Given that I worked 80 Hours a week for roughly 10 weeks from january - march I felt like id rather turn my brain off and watch stupid films (as you can see from my 2013 list) instead of focus on reading most fo the time.
