According to this blogger at Steam Dev Days.

The devs I spoke to talked about the actual PlayStation vr headset.They described super stardust vr to me and explicitly talked about how it was different than the hmz line. Sony has been working on vr for ages, longer than people realize. They’re pretty thrilled to see vr taking off just as their tech is maturing and are interested in the long-term future of the medium, but just their own headset

HMZ line is great, but its not for VR. 45 degree FOV and dual 720p OLEDs make it great for media consumption and light "traditional" gaming [looking at a bigass TV screen in front of you].

I cant wait to see what this PS4 VR setup will end up looking, how will it preform, software support and how much will it cost.

Bring on GT7 in VR!
 
It'll be interesting to see if this is true, but I really have no faith in Sony putting out something as focused and dedicated as the Rift.
 
It makes sense for a big cooperation like sony to not release a beta product . Also vr catching on is good for Sony as they don't have to educate masses alone

why not both? Assuming the rift wont work on PS4 and a Sony headset only works on PS4.. I'd seriously consider buying both, depending on what games were supported on each

Because the Oculus team is so passionate about it, and has the ability to focus on the most minute details. I seriously doubt that Sony (if they are indeed developing a VR solution) are concerned with such details as lowering latency to 20ms or less. Additionally, there's the issue of hardware. To get the experience they want, Oculus has current demos running at nearly 80fps. How is this going to work on the PS4 in a world where everyone is constantly trying to increase graphical fidelity, and these consoles can barely handle 1080p/30fps in 2D?

I'm excited about the prospect of console VR, because at the very least it means more VR support for mainstream titles on PC. That said, I don't believe it will be anywhere near as good as what Oculus has done, even with the first generation dev kit.

Considering it's effectively a tv screen that attaches to your face, I'm not sure affordability is in the cards.
 
I will temper my expectations here just to avoid them being thrown back in my face in the eventual "Can we talk about GAF's overreaction to PS VR?" thread.

I do look forward to see what they come up with.
 
I've always said the likes of MS and Sony have magnitudes more resources to throw at VR versus an upstart like Oculus but they can't really throw more resources at their consoles.

Eh, it's no really a tv screen. I'd say inch for inch these screens are some 2 or 3 times as advanced as a tv panel. But they're just as much smaller too, so costs don't soar quite as high.

You can bet that these things are not going to be cheap as they replace a (big) flatscreen tv.

I see it like Steel. I would guess 300 € and up (for a good one) is the range. A high res TV repleacement with motion tech in it for 100 € ? don't think so but i would surely appreciate it :)

This. The only way I see price coming down is if it achieves mainstream success. I can't imagine the price dropping below $500 for a few years. And that's assuming it sells well to begin with.
 
If Sony nails the price and support for this, it'll be really exciting. I just hope they don't rush it out before the tools/hardware/games are ready.

Sony has been making TVs for decades. They understood latency before the Oculus team even existed, and they have some of the lowest latency TVs in the business. Why would they not be concerned about these details? Furthermore, why would they not be passionate and focus on minute details? They have multiple times the resources that the Oculus team has, and the development of the tech is obviously not dependent on the PS4 itself.

I'm not saying they will top the Rift -- heck, we don't know anything about Sony's approach yet -- and while a healthy amount of skepticism is warranted, I think having "no faith" with your reasons is a bit much. :)

How? Chance is pretty high positional tracking will be done with ps eye, so not much different than what Crystal Cove prototype does, and a resolution over 1080p makes no sense on ps4. Not much possibilities to "blow away" the rift.

I thought the PS4 Rumors were that as it was an accessory for the PS4 it was going to be cheaper than the PS4? I think $299 was floating around?

I don't see any reason for these HMD's to be so expensive, the beauty of these is the tiny size, and the actual cost of materials. I think they'll start off expensive obviously, but the cost on these should drop significantly. If Sony really wanted to push the HMD line, they could drastically reduce the cost. I'm sure the profit margin on those is gargantuan.
 
I wonder if it willl be compatible with all games?

because if it is each eye wont be able to have 720p @60fps like the rift, the PS4 is not powerful enough.

Of course this will be game dependent, Resogun will probably be able to achieve that but something like shadowfall will be like 480p in each eye and only 30fps.

I hope sony find a way to have major titles work well with there VR.

Just a hunch with patent hunting. Maybe they'll be able to make it affordable with subsidization from the medical field using the same components.

Whaaa? Really? That sounds impossible. I wish it were true, but I just can't see how. :/

Hope they reveal this thing soon!
