Is there a particular reason Swat 4 isn't on GOG?
Its part of the activision catalog and 3 is on there.

Licensing for that game is kind of crazy.

Direct2Drive was the only site that had it. Then they were bought out by Gametap. Gametap shut down D2D's authentication servers and SWAT 4 is now 100% unplayable unless you had the game installed prior to the shutdown.

Gametap has sat on it ever since.

So I get a little crazy when people blow off installation DRM with "IT"S NOT LIKE I"LL EVER LOSE MY INTERNET"

Small correction: it's GameFLY that bought Direct2Drive, not Gametap.

More of the Microprose back catalogue:

Silent Service 1+2 ($5.99)

Also:

Flatout 2 ($9.99), which I guess falls in the 'oldish' bracket. (I was thinking "But that's not that old!", then I did the maths and realised it's eight years gone, now.)

Wow that's terrible.

Woah! DROD on GOG?
I've been playing the series for a decade. Best puzzle game ever. I hope it gets the popularity it deserves.

The fourth is coming in a couple of months too.

Yo what's this Silver game? It kinda reminds me of FF7 graphics-wise, anyone care to share impressions of it please?

It's an action rpg with a ffvii look,
I thought it was pretty good when I was young, but it's pretty simple.
Fighting is done by moving the mouse in certain ways after enabeling combat mode.
There's also magic, young virgins and a cool asian guy with a hat.

Interview with Marcin Iwinski on The Witcher 3 and GOG.

GOG.com was quite a niche when it started out, since it specialised in classic games, and it still is in many ways. Do you see a future where bigger publishers start releasing newer games on GOG while being completely DRM-free?

Yes, we’ve already started with newer games, and they’re mostly indie games, but the bigger games will be coming. Obviously this year there will be The Witcher 3, but we’re looking at big publishers joining. I definitely see GOG.com as the ultimate place for games without DRM and one day I would like to have all games there for people to play the way they want to play and really to feel like they have complete ownership.

With the big companies, the concern is always that, ‘hey, they might pirate it’, but they have to understand that people can pirate regardless; it’s one click away. People buy games because they want to, not because they have to, and this is very much what GOG is about. It’s freedom - freedom of the way you play, where you play, and how you play. At the same time, right now we’re working a lot on the convenience of...I can’t talk about it just yet, but there will be lots of things happening over the year with GOG. We’re working on something big that we’ll be announcing in the first half of this year.

Bunch of (well five) new recommended games, finally including Rogue Legacy! Icewind Dale was disappointingly hard to find impressions of here for the quotes (part of the reason there's not 6 or 7 titles for the week), it really doesn't have a big following here (compared to the other IE games), but it is still definitely worthy of being mentioned on list. :)

I also will prioritize new releases when doing updates as well. I went through all the year's releases so far, and the only one that has enough feedback on gaf so far is DROD. Everything else is glossed over/barely mentioned, so congratulations to DROD for being the first recommended title of the year. I'll keep a section in the OP to include the year's recommended releases, then the images/quotes won't drop away for those. So definitely put your impressions for any game you play and enjoy in the thread if you'd like to see it highlighted. I do need a handful of impressions though, so while liked titles such as Bloodnet may be remembered fondly, if there's just 1 or 2 people saying it's a great game, and in pretty those words and nothing else, that's not going to cut it for getting highlighted.

If I remember correctly you didn't gain levels the traditional way by fighting lots of monsters and your stats rising but you got more powerful as you progressed through the game and beat bosses. I remember liking the battle system as it was real time and you could move around freely.

Oh, hey, nifty, I got included as an Icewind Dale quote.

I can definitely give you a better quote than that if you want one too.
Also could definitely give one for Icewind Dale 2 as well.

I really love the Icewind Dale games.

Sure, I think people always appreciate having impressions in the thread of GOG games that were recently played, or recently released on GOG, or like in this case, sorta requested. Just keep in mind I'll be shortening them to 1-2 lines depending, but don't feel you have to restrict your impressions to that, I'll just grab whatever highlights I think work best with the rest of the quotes already there, prioritizing any sections that aren't redundant with what else is said in the quotes.

Insomnia Sale 2: Time Machine Boogaloo

GOG Starts DRM-Free Time Machine Sale Tomorrow That Lets Gamers Extend Or Kill Deals
Daav Valentaten / 1 hour ago

Starting tomorrow, digital distribution storefront Good Old Games, which you all know as GOG.com, will launch a DRM-Free Time Machine Sale. It will, once more, give its community some agency over the deals that are running for a ton of classic PC titles.

By voting, people can add or subtract a second to any currently running sale. Additionally, it’s possible to purchase a game and add some time to the total of the deal as well.

This promotion is in a similar line as its Insomnia Sale, where a limited amount of keys would be up for grabs, instantly shifting to another discount once the current game was depleted. It’s GOG.com’s modus operandi to find new ways to promote games, much like a charity-driven sale before that. We enjoy that news a lot more than their recent forced removal of Fallout games from their catalog.

If you want an exact time to start checking and burden the servers, the sale starts on January 28, 2014 at 2PM GMT, which is also 9AM EST. Games will include Wizardry, Deus Ex and Legend of Grimrock, which might receive a price cut as deep as going for $0.59.

A short trailer for the DRM-Free Time Machine Sale can get you pumped already.

I'm curious how that sale will turn out. My guess is that people will only ever downvote deals because they are not interested in the current deal and want to see what's next. If lots of people do that at the same time we will see some very high turnover rates (probably even before anyone gets a chance to get a purchase through).

The potential for griefing is immense. Oh well, if nothing else it will be a fun social experiment.

I was about to speak up for Icewind Dale 2...but I guess I already did at some point! So that still stands. Amazing work on all this Minsc btw.

While looking through the list of games and in the context of the sale, I couldn't help but make the following two recommendations:

Battle Isle Platinum

Any game that lets you drive a Technotrax is good by default, but the Battle Isle games still represent some of the best hex based strategy gaming you will find. Battles are challenging and massive in scale, sometimes taking hours to resolve. At least check out 2 and 3 or Battle Worlds if you need something more modern.

Ultima 4 + 5 + 6

While people may struggle with the interfaces and archaic graphics, there is no doubting to me that these Ultimas still represent the best of RPG gaming and are not to be missed. While they are all incredibly interesting, for me 6 was especially memorable, from hunting down pieces of a map to discovering hidden treasures in what was only the first half of the game. It all added together to what is still my favourite video game of all time.

Incubation is amazing as well, they totally did an XCom years before XCom. :)

Also of note, spiritual successor to Battle Isle:

Battle Worlds: Kronos

Maan, I still remember when game magazines pitted SiN head to head with Half-Life 1 as the contenders for the ultimate single-player FPS experience...

SiN, nice. Wonder if that's held up as an older FPS shooter as well as RotT/Doom/etc. At least GOG's been releasing a frequent amount of older games to start this year off, almost feels like old times at GOG again. :)

Just noticed Sam & Max Save The World is todays time machine sale title. Is it worth $2.99?

The general opinion is the Telltale Sam & Max series improved with each edition, so it has that going against it. I've played a bit of Save the World and didn't find it as enjoyable or well written as Hit the Road (the original Sam & Max). That said, for $3, if you enjoy adventure games, and the series, I don't think you'd go wrong. Especially if the later games improve a bit like people say.

Ah, the heady days of "The Quake 2 Killers". I had always heard Sin was a broken mess at launch, any truth there?

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
WOW

SiN Gold was just released.

(sorry for three in a row)

Holy shit. I'm buying this one. Nice to see something interesting getting released again. Sin might've been a mess back when it was first released, but it was a great game once it was patched up.

Now that they have Ritual Entertainment on-board, I wonder if that means we'll also be able to get Heavy Metal FAKK 2... the Heavy Metal license can't be that expensive to work around, can it?

Here's to hoping, because it would seem MumboJumbo is on board if Sin is being released (I WANT EP2 DAMMIT!)

The multiplayer was really fun. I used to play with someone and then months later I found out they lived maybe 5 miles away from me.

I would like to see that game as well, hopefully someday. I don't think it is available anywhere digitally.
