As a ps4 owner who doesn't want to buy a one, this news pleases me. I thought it was going to be something I cared about

I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner as it's always been a Microsoft associated franchise. What I'm really curious about is was the IP sold for, but I get the impression that information is not going to be divulged.

Well not surprised at all, I had assumed this for a long time. The IP rights had always been with Microsoft all along, I am just glad they did not buy Epic completely....

Yet another franchise that Sony let slip through their fingers.

Last one I bought was Gears 2 and did not finish it - it lost its magic after the first.

However, if they can re-invigorate the series then that's good for gamers in a market dominated by shooters.

I still think its good for MS to buy and invest in some first party games to compete with Sony rather than buying 'new franchises' from well established third parties.

So going by this

"The thing we showed at E3 last year, it was something that was done in Unreal and more of a concept piece," Spencer said, calling it "an asset" created by the team to get their creative juices flowing, not necessarily an in-development game.

"The studio has really been incubating different ideas over the past six to nine months on what they might work on," he said, "but the discussion with Epic obviously didn't start yesterday. We've been in this discussion for a while. The leadership team there has known for a while."

That Black Tusk game never existed.

I'm not disappointed by this news at all. At least Microsoft haven't acquired exclusivity to a series I care about. :)

Me too! I find myself thinking that some franchise I care about is about to be money-hatted every time they announce and announcement.

Good on Black Tusk though - hope they can freshen Gears up a bit and give it new legs.

Nothing! I said nothing!
Great news, I live the Gears games especially the early ones. Interested to see what they do with them.

Good buy for MS, not many games sell as much as gears.

They would have to buy it from Respawn. Also these guys are smart and probably want it to be a big franchise to sell on everything. Selling it would be a dumb decision.

Its already tied to one set of platforms. I really wouldn't be surprised if MS waved their wands at EA and Respawn and managed to buy the whole franchise.

MS would probably want to keep it as an exclusive franchise for as long as possible. At this point they are all about building.

This is good news for MS.

I wonder what they will do with a new Gears game.

Gears of War 1 and 2 were great. Gears 3 was okay and I haven't played Judgment yet because I never cared about it. But good news for MS indeed.

Interesting . how did the last gear do sales wise?

When was the last time sony / Nintendo bought a 3rd party IP.

I like this move better than money hat 3rd party to restrict other platforms. This time they are bringing something

Pretty big news, squashes any ideas of the IP going multiplatform too. Though I do wonder what exactly Epic plans on doing from now on aside from engine stuff.

First tragedy, then farce.
Good move but I don't want this gen to be defined by franchises from last gen. Eventaully I'd like Uncharted, Gear, AC, Battlefield and COD to F'off.

The is increasingly unlikely given the large budgets of games.

Like the film industry proven winners will be the rule, not the exception.

It's why SE is investing so heavily into Tomb Raider now. It's a brand with built of preception and name recognition that makes it much more attractive than trying to market a new IP.

As long as the aggregate quality of a series doesn't drop horribly over the course of several games franchises will continue to sell well to more casual gamers who walk into a store and want something that they will like. CoD, AC, BF, Halo, Uncharted, Gears, etc etc all fall into this category.

Where can they even take Gears

The trilogy was pretty complete. then they ruined it with that pos judgement.
So much for letting it rest a bit hey Phil?

incoming windows mobile strategy games and then another dormant evil rising up from the earth.

Great news, we had one too many Gears game for 360 but new hardware and a new team could relaunch the franchise, it does sell millions after all.

Shame if the Black Tusk original is no more though.

MS probably paid over the odds for it considering the current predicament they are in. Console equivalent of Man Utd at the current transfer window.

Yeah I don't get the hate for Judgment, I thought it was one of the best in the series much like I thought ODST was one of the best for the Halo series. Side stories sometimes simplify the plot for the best instead of making everything so convoluted.

And yet... you still had to post to let us know.

He cared enough to let us know that he doesn't like Gears I guess.

BTW I'd be curious to see how many of the "don't care", "meh" posts would've been here if the announcement was that Gears is coming on Playstation...I bet the thread would look quite different. :)

Unless they are buying work done by epic, along with the IP, then we are looking at 2016/17 until the next gears game. By the time it's out, i'm sure you'll have enough money saved.
