Polygon says Ubisoft said Watch Dogs Wii U wasn't canned, [retracts statement]

axisofweevils

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
UPDATE: It seems that the source Polygon used to "confirm" Watch Dogs on Wii U, doesn't actually mention there's a Wii U version. Sigh. http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/01/27/us-ubisoft-idUSBREA0Q0MC20140127

http://www.polygon.com/2014/2/3/5374634/why-did-ubisoft-abandon-one-of-its-watch-dogs-trademarks

Last month, reports began circling of GameStop stores in Italy and the U.S. canceling pre-orders for Watch Dogs on Wii U. Ubisoft GameStop [statement edited] told Polygon at the time that the Wii U version had not been canceled, but Nintendo's third quarter financial report published on Jan. 30 did not list Watch Dogs as a Wii U title coming this fiscal year. Ubisoft again confirmed that the game was slated to launch in the first quarter of Ubisoft and Nintendo's fiscal year 2014-2015, which begins in April.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly said that Ubisoft had confirmed to Polygon that Watch Dogs for Wii U had not been canceled, when that confirmation was intended to be credited to a GameStop representative. Ubisoft has declined to comment on the status of the Wii U version of the game.

Good news!

Well, it was already confirmed. This is more like "Watch_Dogs not cancelled" for WiiU. Which is kind of a sad topic that needs to be made.

Yup they gave an answer to Polygon good

Yea one lil rumor out of italy makes a big fuss

It's odd that this comes directly after Ubisoft dropped the trademark...

Edit: apparently that was a fraudulent request that Ubisoft didn't actually send out.

Weird how they went with no comment in the first place. Was it really that hard to say yeah, we're still working on it?

Actually I just read the article. This article is saying at that time which was a month ago... not recently for Wii U. This was before the no comment answer to Emily.

Looking forward to see how the Gamepad will be integrated into the game. Could be a perfect fit. Though I'm not really expecting Ubisoft to invest much in this version. Fingers crossed it will be good.

The order of events here is weird:

- GameStop error
- Retraction, including Ubisoft confirming to Polygon and Kotaku
- Partial third-party release list doesn't include Watch_Dogs on Wii U
- Emily Rogers says Videogamer gets No comment after the fact
- Trademark abandonment story
- This story which is primarily about how trademark abandonment doesn't mean anything and has a closing tag referencing the above

It doesn't seem like anything has changed here?

Did Nintendo pay Ubisoft to keep development going?

The "no comment from Ubisoft" was way overblown.
Anyway, it's a little weird to have a confirmation that a game is not canceled.

Well people started panicking when Ubisoft kept said "no comment" and with Ubisoft track record with Rayman legend and the Wii U doom and gloom.

I'm still cynical. Read the article, and click the linked source saying "confirmed." It's just a blurb and it is not specific to Wii U at all:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/01/27/us-ubisoft-idUSBREA0Q0MC20140127

Reuters said:
(Reuters) - France's Ubisoft on Monday declined comment on market talk of possible delay to the release of its "Watch Dogs" game and said it was still set for release in the first quarter of its 2014-15 fiscal year.

"The group does not comment on market rumors," a Ubisoft spokesman said in response to a query from Reuters, after a 4-percent fall in the company's share price. "The game is still expected in the first quarter of fiscal 2014-15."

I wrote this in a different thread but I think it is worth mentioning --

I'm hoping it comes. With no GTA V on Wii U, it's possible Watch_Dogs could gain a little more traction than the usual mature 3rd party port. I know in the scheme of things, amazon.com is a very small portion of the market, but the pre-sell trends by platform are interesting. I can't think of any reason why one platform would be favored over another on a site like amazon:

amazon.com Watch Dogs Sales Rank (as of 2/3/14):
PS4 - #314
Xbox One - #872
Wii U - $1953
Xbox 360 - #2401
PC - #3903
PS3 - #9197

Wow WiiU version leading PS3 by a lot and over the 360 is a good sign for the game

Am I crazy or am I not seeing a clear "Yes it's coming to Wii U" statement?

You're not crazy. This doesn't confirm anything. They don't even say anything except "Remember when retailers said Wii U version was cancelled? Fun times. Anyways, Watch Dogs is coming this year for certain gaming consoles so start preordering!"

As said, last month Ubisoft specifically stated the Wii U version was not cancelled to Polygon.

When asked about it again for Wii U recently, Ubisoft just said generically that Watch_Dogs was an upcoming game. It didn't specifically address the Wii U version that time.

So we can't completely rule out the possibility of something being up with the Wii U version.

Again, multiple, large news websites contacted Ubisoft very recently about the Wii U version but were only received with "no comment." Has something changed between last month and now? Maybe Ubisoft was waiting for Nintendo to release their financial results similar to how multiple games (Origins DLC, Pacman Museum) were similarly cancelled?

Maybe this was all a weird meta advertisement strategy. I mean, it is a game about information warfare.

Great news. Now, like everyone else with a Wii U, I'll buy this for PS3 or PS4.

Not everyone. As long as Ubisoft have implemented the GamePad features well for a game that's practically made for the controller then the Wii U SKU should be the definitive version. I'll certainly be getting it for the Wii U.

Well all we needed was one confirmation anyways

It's a confirmation from an unreliable narrator though. No article is linked to Polygon's first official confirmation, and no direct quote is given. The author then gives a second piece of evidence that clearly does not back up the statement at all.

Yeah, I'm not falling for that again. :\

Only getting the Wii U version bcause Wii U is the stop gap before my next major PC upgrades.

Thank you.

Anyway the title needs to be changed. The underlying article at Reuters says nothing about the Wii U.

Ye know its not looking good for a console when a previously announced 3rd party title has to be reannounced because gamers didn't believe you the first time

I doubt Batman DLC and Pacman has anything to do with Nintendo financial results, DLC was canceled due to lack of demand, and Pacman being canceled on 3DS tells me its more to do with what they said development time.

Ubisoft doesnt comment on rumors so everybody were bugging them about the rumor, maybe Palygon asked them in a different way idk.

I guess it was just oddly coincidential then that the day after Nintendo financial results it was announced that those two titles are cancelled?

fred, this is nonsense. The game probably runs like garbage and looks worse than the 360 version.
