Sonic Kart Released (unofficial)

I don't follow the whole Sonic homebrew scene too closely, so maybe this is old news, but it certainly came as a nice surprise to me. Given the success of Mario Kart on the SNES, I always expected a Sonic Kart to come to my beloved Mega CD (with its superior scaling chips), but unfortunately it never happened. Well, this is the next best thing. In the developers' own words:

"SRB2Kart is a classic styled kart racer, complete with beautiful courses, and wacky items. Of course, because it’s SRB2Kart, it has a Sonic twist that really shows the classic charm that a lot of us know and love from the good old days™.

We have 100 jam-packed maps for you to bump, explode, and sparkle your way through, from luscious beaches, to Eggman’s dance floor, to England on a good day. All lovingly crafted by many different people. You’ll notice almost every aspect of the game has an immense love and inspiration from the classic sonic games. From the items such as Ballhog, which literally throws bouncey explodey balls at people, to the maps which are bursting with that Sonic feel."

Trailer:

I've been messing about with it for the past half an hour and, despite not be able to get it working with my USB controller, it plays really well. I only have a regular laptop with integrated Intel HD graphics and it runs perfectly. Given there are over 100 tracks, some are obviously better than others, but the overall quality is pretty good. I particularly like the Green Hill and Mountain Top zones.

You can download it here.

With Sonic Team Racing being delayed until next year, hopefully this can tide people over until then.

This really looks fantastic. If Sega had any brains at all, they'd quickly pay these developers and release this racer on the major consoles. Bring it to Switch and I'll be perfectly happy.

This actually looks amazing. Like something wedged between Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 in gaming evolution, which is a pretty great place to land.

Looks like its running on Doom engine or something like that.

It is, according to the official Sonic Robo Blast 2 website:
Sonic Robo Blast 2 is a 3D open-source Sonic the Hedgehog fangame built using a modified version of the Doom Legacy port of Doom. SRB2 is closely inspired by the original Sonic games from the Sega Genesis, and attempts to recreate the design in 3D. While SRB2 isn't fully completed, it already features tons of levels, enemies, speed, and quite a lot of the fun that the original Sonic games provided.

As well as the kart game, there are also people working on this 3D platform Sonic game:

By the way, you can download the above platform game here.

I just had a little play with it, and it's pretty impressive. It runs very smoothly, like a weird mixture of 3D Sonic and Doom. However, I did find the music a little lackluster so far, and the lack of a lock-on for attacking enemies really makes you appreciate why Sonic Team included that feature from the very first 3D Sonic game. Still worth playing, just not as fun as the kart game, imho.

Wow, it really looks and plays pretty good, really an amazing fanmade game!

But, i don't get this, you can't just have a traditional offline race with IA opponents, right? That would've made it perfect for me, too bad.

Why would sonic use a cart? He’s slower that way. Makes no sense to me.
That's like asking why Goku and Piccolo need drivers licences. It just works.

It actually looks slower than that new Sonic without the All Stars Racing game thats been previewed recently and that one looked like the karts were powered by treacle.
