Djokovic disqualified from US Open after 'hitting' lineswoman with ball

“It’s the right decision,” Tim Henman, who was disqualified from Wimbledon for a similar incident in 1995, told Amazon Prime. “He is not aiming for the line judge, but has hit the ball away and you have to be responsible for your actions.”

Huh, guess you know a thing or two about not taking responibility for your actions.

Is this for real? They can get him out for such a stupid incident?

It always happen with soccer that a powerfull shot can hit someone from the people around but they never disqualfied anyone...
What a dishonest comparison, as this was not during a play. OBVIOUSLY a tennis player won’t be disqualified either for if they hit someone in the course of normal play. Likewise, when a football player kicks the ball to the audience on purpose with the game paused he will get at least yellow carded. If he shot the ball to a linesman and hit him in the throat yeah he’s getting red carded.

I mean... he did came up to her after noticing he killed her with that ball. I twas clearly a lack of forward thinking on his part but he reacted to it

If its a rule, its a rule. It is however, a stupid one. I don't understand what the line judge was even doing. Move, you idiot. Was she not paying attention? How does a line judge get caught not paying attention? I'm sure it hurt, but I don't understand how she doesn't get out the way.

It's still a piss pour decision to expell someone for this.

It’s a pretty clear rule to not physically act out in anger during a sporting event. Can a golfer just fire off a drive into the crowd after a bad put? A baseball player fire a few line drives into the umpires just because he is having a bad day?

Safety for all and the integrity of the sport are important. Of course he did not mean to hurt her, but he still was negligent in his control of himself and his equipment

So he sits out one single event and learns to be a human being who does not lash out in anger WHILE AT WORK.

Dude it was a fucking lob with zero power in it, you act like he served full power against the woman, cmon...

Clearly it was an accident, but he has always been a hot head and has a history of doing stupid shit like this

I was not aware of ariel helwany doing tennis press conference too...
No I didn’t
I Did not mention a single thing about force.

cmon man..
You said he did that because of anger, you don't throw a perfectly normal lob if you are angry...

The other footage of him getting pissed and hitting a strong straigh ball was much worse.

A shitload of tennis player use a lob to return balls to the receivers, he just didn't looked+incredible unlucky because the ball hitted the woman in the throat.

I'm okay with him getting kicked out for a rage moment, but that was just an incident.

Is he known for being bit of a dick?

I only saw the small video in the tweet, but it looked like he was just knocking the ball off the court; he didnt even appear to look.

I was expecting he chucked a shit fit and hit it in anger or he didnt like a call and aimed one at her; but it looked pretty random from what I could see.

Accident lol? You're not supposed to shoot random balls with your racket just because you're frustrated. Yeah he didn't mean to hit her, but it's his fault.

People can't even watch a 20 second video, pay close attention to the first 3-5 seconds of the tweet. It's like you people are intentionally retarded.

You sure you know your tennis players? You are free to dislike Djokovic but to say he is the pissy one? Nadal...his name in the history books of Tennis...than name will forever be known for a person that is constantly pissed off at the world and the games he plays. When the fuck did you ever see him smile or chat up fans?

Djokovic is the guy that has fun with the cameraman, the towel girl, kids in the audience etc. Nadal since day one was one of the biggest miserable bitches in sport and the sorest of the sore losers. You literally described Djokovic and not Nadal.
I don't watch tennis, so maybe the small snippets of media I remember are not representative. All I remember from watching clips is Nadal is emotional and cheery and more exciting to watch. But Djokovic has the personality of a rock. Federer is the chill nice guy athlete.

I thought he was just knocking an extra ball behind him to a ball boy, although with maybe a little more force than you normally see from most players. It didn't look like he was hitting it out of frustration like he did a few minutes before. I thought defaulting him out of the game was weak and shows how fragile we've all become.

I love Djokovic and the energy he brings to tennis, which is backed up by just how good he is. My estimation of him as a man went up when I heard he won't prematurely commit to a Coronavirus vaccination. What he said is not Anti-Vaxxer at all. It's fine to get vaccines and encourage others to do the same (provided they derive from an ethical origin, of course) but the state does not have the natural authority to make them compulsory and anyone who unconditionally demands that it can really needs to re-evaluate whether or not they are thinking for themselves.

You must be one of those weird Djokovic fans who seems out of touch with reality. Djokovic has many times cursed out fans and is known for "roid-rage" moments. He could finish his career with 30 majors and he will never ever be loved and respected like Federer and Nadal. He just comes across as a big phony with his over the top efforts to be liked (like the things you describe, it's not geniune at all).

Hardened people don't play tennis. Shocking I know.

I'd love to get you on a court. :messenger_beaming: Let's see how "hardened" you think you need to be when you're hitting rallies with someone where every ball on your racquet feels like a brick. Or the fact you have about one half of a second before a 120mph+ serve is at your face. Those tennis balls are hard and heavy when you add the kind of spin and pace at the top/pro levels. You really have no idea how physically hard the game is.

It's really hard to tell from video but that serve probably felt like it weighed 30 pounds against his racquet. Supposedly Rafter sustained a bad shoulder injury in this match from a serve return mishit. Think about what it would take to do that to a fully fit top athlete.

Edberg once hit a guy in the groin who fell over and later died.

So yes, balls flying fast on these courts can be dangerous, and painful. And it's a grueling sport.

Pretty simple.

I was quoting the notions that this was done out of "anger" or "frustration", which it's demonstrably not, the guy was sidelining to the ball boy. He tosses one in the first 5 seconds of the video, literally seconds before the "fatal hit". His intentions are crystal clear, this was an accident, not a fit of rage. A rules are rules technicality is a perfectly valid response. It's stupid as fuck, and is the equivalent of ejecting a football player for tossing the ball to the ump/sideline after a play which accidentally hits a coach or something, but at least it's loosely defensible and supported by evidence. Here it's just the opposite, the evidence clearly proves this was an accidental hit with no anger or intentional/unintentional malice behind it.

Top seed Novak Djokovic was disqualified from the US Open for accidentally hitting a ball at a line judge in his fourth-round match.

Djokovic, 33, showed his frustration after losing serve to trail 6-5 against Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta.

The Serbian world number one took a ball out of his pocket and hit it behind him, striking the female line judge in her throat.

Novak Djokovic has been defaulted out of the US Open after a ball he hit away in frustration struck a line judge in the throat during his match against Pablo Carreno Busta late in the first set of their fourth-round clash.

The Serb, who had previously been suffering with a shoulder injury, was visibly frustrated after being broken in the first set as the Spaniard took a 6-5 lead.

He struck a ball away in frustration - and although he was not facing the assailed lineswoman, the ball hit her and she was bent double, coughing and needing medical attention.

Not to mention he has a history of this stuff

Exactly. Set an example. Too many kids these days raging over everything. Throwing controllers etc. I swear my little nephew is the worst with this ever since he started watching ninja play fortnite. Kids think it’s cool or something when I’m my days you would be laughed at for acting like a little baby. Learn to control your emotions because once they take a hold of you, you can make life altering mistakes.

I'm not really sure what you think editorialized articles regurgitating a press release prove. Had he not tossed the first ball you might have an argument about this being an angry slap, but in the context of that existing, its not reasonably debatable. He was lobbing to the ballboy and caught the ball at an unintended angle. His history in irrelevant, we have video of the event.

LOL Do you people intentionally try to mislead or spread FUD in this thread ?

That man died from trauma to his head as a result of falling over and hitting his head after losing his balance before the ball struck his groin.
I played tennis throughout my college years. Yes the balls zipping by at times can hurt when they hit you in the body but not on the level of causing death. You may want to cut back on talking shit mate.

Alot of tennis players do things out of anger. Even the best one's. John McEnroe did far worse things in his days. These are human beings, not robots. Expect emotions to be shown in competitive sports. This was a regrettable incident but nothing that should be banned for. The intention was not to hit the lady and it's a rather harsh punishment to be defaulted from the tournament.

Here are alot of precious fairies in this thread. To them tennis is a bloodsport where life and limb is in danger of 1000mph missiles zipping about.

I honestly don't know where this shit comes from. I've played the game during my college years and got hit by all sorts missiles. None remotely put my life in danger. This women getting that soft ball in the neck made the most out of it. One would think she got hit by a brick. Sport nowadays is fucking soft.

In soccer, you so much as sneeze in the direction of another player, its a yellow card.

If the rules say. .. hit someone outside of normal play, get DQed ... then it doesn't matter what the intention is.

Past behavior means nothing. Ranking is not considered.

Break the rule, intentionally or not, pay the price. Seems fairly straightforward.

wtf it barely hit her and she looks so distressed in that article like she was punched in the face...jfc. I understand rules are rules but fuck off with that overreaction.

Women are the weaker sex, being hit by a tennis ball for them would feel the same as a man getting hit by a medicine ball.

I rate this old one by Novac better (jump to 6.40)

Hit way harder and without the overreaction, there's a ton of ball kids in this compilation too, none of them had such a reaction.

I read the article before watching it from this angle in the OP, the media pretty much lied. He was clearly hitting the ball back to ball boy. This was an accident and he only should’ve been docked a point.

Big fan of Novak, its clear it was an accident. That said, I hate that he's losing out on this tournament, but it looks like the suspension is completely fair. Rules are rules.

People shouting over-reacting here must ve never played tennis....being hit by the ball is no joke. I remembered back in my college days, a friend's mom was hit by a serve and ended up with concussion (she went to the bathroom then forgot the spectators should stand on the side of the court).

He didn’t crush it. I get that it was quick, but she’s a line judge. You’d think she’d be paying attention.

It might look like she had a chance in slow motion, but the reaction time was way too small for her to realistically get out of the way. My masturbation related diminished reflexes would have no chance, I'm getting hit by that ball 10 times out of 10.
