First Real Next Gen Size Comparison (No AR)

I can't look at that PS5 monstrosity. It looks so stoooooohpid.

That glossy black in the middle, those weird long "ears", that curved shape around the disc drive....

Looking at it makes me feel like... Physically uncomfortable.

Twitter comments make NeoGaf look like Oxford University.

"PS5 is bigger because it fits in 8K and more storage than Series X" - Twitter rando.

Ps5 volume is 15.4 * 10.24 * 4.01= 633

XSX volume is 12 * 6 * 6 = 432

The ps5 is literally 50% larger than XSX, not fucking 5%!

Yeah, when actually talking about having a physical object, you need to think of it in terms of its largest dimensions, which has PS5 as way, way bigger. If you use average it's closer, but 5% is based of this thinnest part and just really silly

The more I think about it the more I think Sony screwed up. Here I am, fully willing to enter the Sony gaming ecosystem for the FIRST TIME...and quite excited to be doing so if I was to be honest. But I have to say the PS5 design - perhaps even more so it's DIMENSIONS - has dampened my enthusiasm quite a bit. That I feel this way suggests that Sony could have done better to "seal the deal" with folks like myself.

At any rate, this thing just HAS TO BE whisper quiet, right? I mean, if it ran hotter or louder than it's more compact competitor would be the final nail in the coffin of this design.

Can't agree enough that the highly reflective middle part was a bad decision, btw. If this thing is anywhere close to where it can pick up a lot of daylight, like a window, and produce a reflection, +40 to tackiness.

I'm more amenable to the design than most though. Vertically. If it weren't so damn big, and attention drawing, I think it would be fine, possibly even good
looking in its own way, if maybe difficult to coordinate.

But then again, I think the GameCube is a fine design, lol.

If you have an entertainment center based around whites and blacks though, you are set. It will fit right in.

Yup. It's completely out of line with modern entertainment setups for sure. The size of the thing is only going to make it harder to accommodate.
The PS5's design isn't even daring in a good way. It's just bulky and obnoxious.

Imo the only orientation PS5 should have, from a home designer pov, is its side view, like that Venti guy photo.

Once you see it from its front, you are right, obnoxious is the word. Still cant unsee that cheap glossy plastic. :messenger_pensive:

The irony with the design of both new next gen consoles is that its pretty obvious they are designed to stand vertically yet almost all entertainment centers are designed for horizontal hardware. The horizontal options are there but frankly I feel like both companies should have designed for that vs the Tower idea. The console concept is gaming hardware you can fit into your TV entertainment set and have it blend not disrupt and takeover or force you to have something sit outside of your set up.

HHUUGGEEE and ugly bitch, but with great fuglyness comes great entertainment. I will be building a separate shelf for both of these monstrums....fuck am xcited

I wonder what the hell whoever designed it (and whoever approved) was thinking. This is one of the ugliest consoles I have ever seen.

At least we don't have tiny consoles with worse CPUs and less-than-extraordinary next-gen jumps, like we did last generation, though.

This is a return to 360/PS3 thinking, and I will gladly take a little entertainment center creativity over the alternative.

It is not only that!

You have to take into consideration the physical footprint of the object. Example:ps5 requires the stand whether horizontal or vertical. This add more to it's volume.

It is curved design so the volume is way lower than if you use squared dimensions.... the volume takes account for both the thinnest and the fattest parts.

These are the official volumes (Yasuhiro Ootori shared them):

PS5 7.2L
Series X 6.86L * this one was not shared by Sony but it a square design and easy to calc
PS5 DE 6.4L

That is why it is 5% bigger.

A console with an appearance that evokes existential dread.

Is a console supposed to trigger the fight or flight response?.

Agree.

I've called it a big ass interstellar white Sauron before. But it gets worse everytime I see it.
How can anyone put that into his/her living room? Imagine that fucking Toyota designed white chunk of missing taste towering beside your TV all day.

🤦‍♂️

The PS5 takes up 7.2L

The XSX takes up 6.86L

That's a 5% difference
You and thomas can go shout at Sony for all I care. My dimensions are the actual and OFFICIAL dimensions given by Sony.

There is no item when looked at by consumers is looked at by the "volume of water displaced when submerged under water". It is all about length width and depth.

And you use square calcs lol.

Using the dimensions if the PS5 was a rectangle you will get 10.55L but it is 7.2L due the curved design.

The measurements account for the negative space. When you don't factor in negative space the volume difference is 5%

Need I remind you he was comparing the sizes of the consoles themselves?

Stop whining so much because you don't like the facts

It puzzles me how Sony could come up with such atrocious design. Standing is almost 1/3 taller than SeX and while horizontal it is almost at the same height (if you measure from the highest tip of the white shell).

It's a normal console design, one of my favorites and this thread shows people can't stop looking at the PS5, when you look at the Xbox you want to give up.

ANyone see any size comparisons for "compactness" of the S? I see a whole heap of "biggest" comparisons with PS3 and Xbox.... but no GameCube, Wii, WiiU etc to show off how small the S is in comparison.

The PS5 might be the ugliest console ever. The dumb fins and multiple colors just look awful. The fact that I will have to squeeze that thing into an entertainment cabinet and hope I get enough airflow will be a major concern. The disk drive should be on top with the design as well. I want to see the other designs the rejected.

Oh please tell me how you will fill this negative space :pie_roffles::pie_roffles::pie_roffles::pie_roffles::pie_roffles::pie_roffles::pie_roffles::pie_roffles:

Because you fucking can't. As it stands (pun not intended), you cannot utilize this negative space, so it is fair and square to say that the ps5 is way (waaaaaaaay) bigger than XSX. Add the stand there and it is even bigger.

? :pie_thinking: :pie_thinking:? Nigga what
We are talking about the size of the console... so in volume terms it is not that bigger than X and the DE is even smaller than X but you chanced the subject to curved design takes up square volume (not true btw).

There is a interview about the volume sizes if you are interested:

Edit - Fixed the link.

Forgive me if this has been asked, but where is the "exhaust" on the PS5? Laying down, I can remove the back panel to my cabinet for airflow, so thats OK, but its gonna be tight on the sides. Cause for concern?

Next to PS4 and PS3

The average person, with these things sitting in their living rooms, doesn't give two fingers about volumetric measurements. They can't compress the size of the console to collapse away the negative space and compact the form factor. Not unless they want to completely destroy their PS5.
