Xbox Launches Ad-supported Game Streaming to Xbox Insider (1 hour play limits)

Are You Okay Season 2 GIF by Paramount+

Do you know what thread you're in?
I was literally posting in the Circana thread. That's where I thought I was typing that haha. I'm not sure how I ended up in this one lol. Must've blacked out from my blood sugar or something.

Next "Using the power of AI, we are able to detect a downtime of gameplay and loading screens to insert an ad safely without affecting gameplay" Wouldn't be surprised.

I had a dream 😂

Another interesting thing is this gives free multiplayer to Xbox Console users, especially Xbox One users streaming Series X games.

Online Paywall days are numbered. Xbox now has free Cloud Saves, and free Cloud Gaming, and free multiplayer on Consoles via Cloud Gaming.....

I did not list that the service would not interrupt game flow. Would you still consider that a disruption? As for GFN. I don't sub so the point is lost on me other than to say someone else is doing it too.

I can see uses for some people, but it is not for me.

If a single player game, you just restart session, watch another 2 minute ad, then continue gaming. For multiplayer games, you just hope you don't get killed in between matches. For example, with FortNite on a non Gamepass account, I have resumed FortNite matches between multiple two one hour sessions.

Of course, this would only work IF no queues. This is an option for those that can't afford hardware or don't play enough to warrant new hardware or subscription. It's OPTIONAL. You can always subscribe to any (non PC) Gamepass tier to get unlimited Cloud Gaming with no session hourly limits.
So how many years before ads and play limits reach the highest tier?
Never. Ultimate will never get ads. That's how every streaming service works, the highest tier will always be Ad free. At most, the entry level tier may get some ads like 30 seconds vs 120 seconds.

It's hard to imagine someone like that being an Xbox Insider and already owning the game outright. I could see this working for people who have like the lowest tier Gamepass subscription and nothing else, though :pie_thinking:. That's basically how Playstation Now works iirc. Maybe that's the plan for the full rollout.
I use remote play frequently while on an exercise bike. Sometimes a cloud server will have better performance than spinning up a remote session. Probably not a frequent use case for most people, but just throwing out a real world example. I do the same with GeForce now. They have the same 1hr of free streaming for watching ads setup.

For whom?

And how are they doing?
For Helix or Xbox ecosystem in general. Sony is likely going to keep their paywall for several more years until forced to adapt.

Not doing too good apparently, makes no difference to me if they sell 30 million hardware or 60 million hardware. Or if games are exclusive or not, as long as they're Play Anywhere, Cloud Enabled, and Day 1 Gamepass, I'm satisfied. But what would you have them do? Be honest. You wanted exclusives, you will get them.

Lol at the fanboy type preemptive bullshit on that announcement:

"Advertising has existed in gaming for decades, from in-game placements to free-to-play models. But it hasn't always been built with the player in mind. When done well, advertising can help lower the cost of access. It creates another way for players to get into games without an upfront streaming purchase and expands audiences through new ways to play.

For brands, this only works if showing up here adds to the experience, not takes away from it.

Given that, we want to be clear about how we will approach ad-supported services across XBOX:

We start with the player. Ads should create value.
We do not interrupt the flow of gameplay.
We hold ads to the same quality bar as our content.
We're clear about what's advertising.
We make sure ads fit what players expect on each platform.
"

Disrupting me while gaming that would be a total nogo. But MS still has to upgrade their hardware.
Isn't the one hour cutoff a disruption itself? It literally ends your play session.

Online Paywall days are numbered.
You say this as if you're getting cool stuff and it's to fight their own paywall. Watch this enter a paywalled tier when it comes out of the insider program. Watch it try to push you to a higher sub to get rid of them. Watch the time between ads get shorter. Watch the number of ads shown at a time increase. It's like you didn't witness youtube back in the day vs youtube now, and that costs a lot less to run than rendering games.

i really hope this doesn't morph into ads before games people purchase over time. But I do bet this gets incorporated into GP with and without ads tiers at some point, which Sony would probably then copy.

games from your library

Wait so you gotta watch ads to stream games you own? That's horrible and I guess that's the inevitable goal of the all digital future. You'll buy games that you will only be able to play via streaming, forced to watch ads and propaganda since they will have total control of your screen.

Let's hope this isn't some kind of opening act for yet another screw‑up in the videogame world… Microslop is an expert at ruining everything, and other publishers might follow its bizarre examples. Let's hope they crash and shut down that Xbox mess as soon as possible…

No, not really a disruption if the hour session is the limit given. You get kicked out, however, the server session doesn't end immediately, you have a window of 10 minutes to get back in. Why complain about a free service? Subscribing to any tier of Gamepass would give unlimited gaming without session limits.

I guess if it 1min for every hour. Sure why not I guess.
I think it's 2 minutes.

XBOX users ARE getting cool stuff yes. I have setup my nieces and nephews with FortNite on xcloud, this works even better. And the 1 hour session limits actually work out better for them, to limit play time.

When/IF the ads enter a paid Gamepass tier, we shall discuss it then. However, I am 99.99% confident it will NEVER enter Ultimate tier. The most I can see it is for Essential tier.

Session length CANNOT go lower than 1 hour, that's been the norm for GFN since 2021 and norm for FortNite since May 2022 launch of FortNite on xCloud. Disney+ and Netflix show 60 second ads every 20 minutes, so 3 minutes every hour. For Cloud Gaming, they're doing 2 minutes at start of every hourly session.

The costs are quite cheap for Cloud Gaming, especially for Hyperscalers AND ones with AMD partnership. You can do the math yourself, sure beats subsidizing hardware to the tune of billions of dollars.

Reducing barrier of entry via a free to play hardware, how is that bad for Cloud only gamers or gamers with older hardware? Don't like ads? Just subscribe. It's about options.

I think that's just for preview testers
No, GFN and FortNite on xcloud also do one hour session limits. That's the normal standard for free Cloud Gaming. Subscribing would remove the limits, even the Essential tier.

Ads are only for the free tier, as in no subscription needed. Gamepass Essential, Premium, Ultimate tiers all let you Stream your own games since November 2024 for Ultimate and October 2025 for the other two.

i can see this working as demos
?
Demos used to be free and since that is additional dev time, 2 or 5 hour full game trials seem to become the norm (at least on Plus) and small games should get back to the Xbox Live Arcade procedure (don't know if that is still a thing). It used to be free marketing (even though often failing at selling the product). And not paid products.

Ad supported streaming seems like an okay idea, but with how annoying youtube became the last couple of months, the amount of ads never stop when its already past enough.
A few ads at the beginning or every hour might be the initial proposal and later it will be every 10 minutes. Completely blocking locking in in anything.

"Oh but it's only on her base/lowest tier!"

Yeah that's how it starts. Give it a few years and it will infest every tier other than the highest.

Yeah, that's how Amazon, Hulu, Netflix HBO, etc. etc. all were. Now the plan without ads is 2x more expensive.

These stupid ass companies keep trying to make more and more money, even though they're doing just fine.

Like I said in another thread, not like older consoles are cheap anymore (nor are the games). So you're fucked, money wise, regardless.

Wait so you need to own the game first before you can stream it "for free"
The way I understand it is direct console to phone / device streaming is free just like ps5. But to stream from the cloud, even if it's a game you own, requires a Gamepass subscription, but now you can do it for "free" with watching two minutes of ads per hour.

Or you can stream directly from your console still.

Wait so you need to own the game first before you can stream it "for free"
Yes, like COD MW4 or F2P games like COD Warzone.

Gamepass Ultimate allows Stream your owned Games since November 2024, Essential and Premium got that capability in October 2025. Now it's free with ad support.

No hardware, no subscription needed, just Buy and Stream.

I heard 2 min of commercials for every 50 min of gameplay. Then, the game picks back up where you were at. Just enough time for a pee break or drink refill. If you subscribe, no commercials if you don't pay a sub, you can still stream if you want (I guess just to avoid installing??). Seems ok.

Okay I just tested this. It's important to point out I haven't had an Xbox in a couple years but I was in the insider program.

I signed into cloud gaming on my iPhone and it let me play some stuff, but I was limited because I didn't have a controller. Was using touch screen. I booted up 007 Goldeneye (don't play with touch screen, bad time).

The moment I clicked the game it started the ads. If you fiddle with the guide UI or look through achievements and such it pauses the ad. The ad itself has to be in screen for the two minutes.

After the ad was done the game was already booted and good to go, so the game must load and connect to the server while the ad is playing. I remembering trying xcloud in the past and it always had a minute of connecting / booting so it's at least nice that happens in the background while the ad is running.

I closed the game and rebooted it and it DID NOT make me watch ads again. It just went straight to the game.

Streaming quality was fine and latency was low.

Main takeaway? I can see this being a good feature for games like JRPGs or slower games you want to grind out during a lunch break or if you are just trying to kill time somewhere. It worked. Wasn't a hassle.

What ads did it play?

If using Xbox.com/play on browser, go to Settings, Stream, Enable Stats Overlay. You can see your ping and Decode times stats. I'm curious what ping you get.

There's also options of Better xCloud browser addon for Edge browser. Or you can check out the OneCast and Midori apps.

It begins. Entire ad supported streaming games soon! No one will have any money so the only currency will be blood and attention.

(Hell is full btw)

If nobody has any money, what is the point of even showing ads?

A DoorDash ad was first. Not sure after, wasn't paying attention. It played four 30sec ads. Generic tv / Hulu ads.

Since when has profit stopped these guys? Corps will throw hundreds of millions down the drain just burn down the audience of a beloved IP. I don't think the suggestive content will go away, just your ability to choose an alternative. They don't do it for profit. If so you'd have seen it stop ages ago. They do it for the love of the game.

My point is that if nobody has money, why would companies pay millions for ad space when nobody can afford their products/services?

I do totally agree with you. The world has gone mad.

Yea, makes sense. MS used to be the Ad tech supplier for Netflix before Netflix built the in house structure.
Your Ping to xcloud datacenter is great. Mine is usually in 10-15 MS range, lowest I have seen from others is 1 MS on GFN and 3 MS on xCloud, those users probably were living inside the datacenters. Decode is fine, jitter is a bit high, bitrate too low but that's likely due to the game you chose and dark areas. Resolution should go up to 1080p on tablets and laptops. Make sure WiFi is on 5 ghz channel, preferably WiFi 6 or 7 router, but overall stats look pretty good, enough to play multiplayer games.

That's the very definition of a disruption. I'm not complaining about the service by saying it's disrupted every hour. it's not free, it's also in testing.

Obviously, what tier would they sell the removal of it on otherwise if not the most expensive tier? They will introduce it as a paid teir and try to use it to push you to pay more to remove it was my point.

The point was that theyre less cheap than video hosting by youtube or Netflix and those slowly boiled their users for more ad revenue and higher more expensive subs to remove them.

And amazon prime video had no ads with an Amazon prime subscription until they added them then asked for more money to remove them. My point is that this is a free trial run for insiders right now but enshittification is an inevitability.

The future is now.
AI ads of a shooting an army walking down from the top of the screen. Go to the side where all these +1's are adding to you firepower. Then back to the army. Then over to shoot something that would REALLY increase your firepower, but then gets killed before moving over to the +1.

Will this Ad please stop. I beg you. no more.
Funnily enough a colleague of mine got baited by that and now has been playing it for a year and that part is just 1% of the whole game lmao

People always look at this shit in isolation and say "well it's fine, I suppose some people might actually benefit from this". Which is true of literally anything.

We've seen this movie before, we know how it ends. Microsoft isn't trying to do you a solid with this. They're drip feeding the end of individually owned media.

I'd hope people don't fall for it, but of course they will.

So I tested this streaming on Xbox app for funzies.

Played The Witcher 3, game is recognizing my 2022 save from XSX (when I still had it):

YTbZp64.png

Game looks like shit on 4k screen:

Fro97lz.jpeg

BUT, it's 60fps and it has absolutely decent input lag, if I didn't know this game was streamed I wouldn't know that it's not running on local hardware based in input lag. This is 100% truth, I'm not lying. But I guess 1Gb/s connection helps here and maybe I'm close to MS data center?

VLW230f.jpeg

That's just ~130Km from where I live.

So for people with netbooks or something, this is a decent way to experience games, but yeah... image quality is horrible.

My closest center is 1600 km away. Very noticeable input lag and artifacts.
