“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” is a slight favorite to knock Disney and Marvel's breakout space adventure “Guardians of the Galaxy” out of the top spot at the box office this weekend, in what could be one of summer's closest popcorn smackdowns.

The kiddie crowd will lift Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo and Michelangelo narrowly past Quill, Drax, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon of “Guardians,” say the analysts, with both films likely to top $45 million for the weekend.

All I have to say is:

"Ninja Turtle, you better stop poking me!"

It may knock it down this weekend, but in the long run no chance Ninja Turtles will tear down Guardians or even get near it. I have friends who hate Marvel movies who are seeing Guardians for the third time.

Bitch, we're the Guardians of the Galaxy.

It may steal no. 1, but I doubt it will even touch the total box office take. That tingle of joy I felt with just the thought of seeing Guardians doesn't exist with TMNT.

At all.

Not even the slightest.

Every time I see a trailer or poster, I swear to God, my only reaction is "What in the holy hell were they thinking?"

Oh no, not Guardians of the Galaxy, that wonderful indie film that the small studio is depending on to keep it afloat.

wise man say, you're about to get REKT

So how many of you calling TMNT a piece of shit have seen it yet?

I'll always stick to the original movies, but I wouldn't mind seeing the Turtles have success.

Only a few gaffers have seen it, the rest are armchair critics/tired old hate :)

i just watched the trailer. shit is like a reskin of transformers but with turtles that had ooze and subsequently sulfuric acid dropped on them

It's about people wanting quality to succeed, especially after Pacific Rim, Edge of Tomorrow, and Dredd barely succeded - not cynical cash grabs from complete hacks. If people are going to pay for pulpy spectacle, I'd rather they see Guardians than anything Michael Bay produces.

Didn't the quality already succeed? TMNT making money this week isn't going to do anything to the success that Guardians has had.

Also just because there's one enjoyable movie out there that a lot of people like doesn't mean there isn't room for another movie that people can potentially enjoy too.

It may save the next childhood franchise from being butt ravaged though.

"say the analysts"

Yeah no. Seems they are not basing their prediction in actual ticket pre sales or something.

GoTG is doing Iron Man 3 numbers during the weekdays, a 65m+ second weekend isnt out of the question now.

Of course it may top Guardians, it's a Ninja Turtles movie. Doesn't matter if it's a piece of shit, the name alone is a ticket to 50 million opening weekenend

What does your tingle have to do with the box office take? Nobody here would admit to even a passing interest in Transformers 4, but it had the biggest opening weekend of the year (so far) in the US and is #3 in total box office (right behind #1 & 2). The kids that will drive TMNT's receipts are not on this message board (not to say it will set records, but it will do just fine).

I hope it makes enough to bump down GotG. Hopefully then it'll teach Hollywood that people don't want to see that kind of childhood ruining crap.

Is that what I'm supposed to do?

Oh, two fun, mindless (?) action romps racing for dat money, how terrible. Great for you guys, I have to wait until end of August and mid-October to see them D:
