The haters were right. That should teach for giving me shit a chance! This movie is terrible.

I'll just listen to my 90s TMNT soundtracks and enjoy the nostalgia. I learned my lesson with Star Wars Episode 1 to be more careful with my good childhood memories.

The current Nick cartoon is really good. I wholeheartedly recommend it to any TMNT fan.

Yep, it's the Megan Fox show. I don't know what the fuck is the deal with some people insisting it wasn't. I really should've known better. I can't remember the last time I wasted my time and money like this in a movie theater. Expanded impressions, with unmarked spoilers, because fuck this movie:

This was my big concern. I mean if you were to list the main characters in the 1990 film it would be April and Casey and Raph, with Raph in third place, but at least that April was great. Megan Fox has not impressed me in anything I have seen her in.

Dear god that review is fucking hilarious

Also saw it tonight....yep. It was bad. They really tried to connect all these dots that really didn't need to be. Like, what is the ooze that created them? Why are they named after Renaissance figures? All the characters are connected to each other somehow. Except Will Arnet. And thank god
he didn't end up being Casey Jones
which I was worried might happen.

Btw, I know this is a movie about giant turtles, but where the hell is there a huge mountain range covered in snow minutes outside of NYC during the spring/summer time? I grew up in the Poconos and they definitely aren't the size of the alps. That sequence is pretty much a good example of the ideas behind the movie in a nutshell...

Mr. Hollywood: "Let's have the turtles slide down a snowy mountain on their shells in this crazy action sequence. It will be amazing for the trailer"
Production: "Well sir, the movie takes place in New York City. The turtles are ninjas and mostly sneak around using the cities sewer network"
Mr. Hollywood: "I don't fucking care, make it happen!!"

The ninja turtles in a forested/mountain snowscape is actually a fairly common story beat in the shows and comics. There are murmurs that the next season of the nicktoon is heading that direction.

Can't say I'm surprise Meg is the main show. The turtles and Splinter are CG, gotta find a way to not have a overblown budget.

Theater near me I love going to isn't taking GotG off their best screen this weekend of Turtles. Going to try and catch and early show tomorrow morning.

Huh. I guess I'm in the minority so far. I thought it was pretty entertaining. A little slow at the beginning because they had to establish April and the world.

The turtles were all pretty funny and their different personalities shone through both in speech and mannerisms. Fight scenes weren't bad and I thought shredder was pretty cool. Audience was laughing at all the scenes I laughed at so I think everyone in the audience enjoyed it. The. Again midnight showing so I'm assuming they were all fans.

Personally enjoyed it more than transformers due to the humor. Elevator scene was hilarious. I can't see how someone would say this thing shits on their childhood. If anything the turtles were as goofy as I remember them from Saturday morning cartoons and the of movies.

Why is the
turtle van so tiny
? Lol

Maybe the gaf and reviews piling on lowered my expectations. But I don't regret watching this. It was entertaining.

Yup, it sucked. It was TF4 all over again. Terrible script, acting and dialogue. Other than the Turtles themselves, the sfx were bad (especially Splinter, holy shit what did they run out of money and use a Playstation 3 to render him??) and Megan Fox is a terrible actress and this was highlighted by the fact that
this was pretty much the April O'Neil show and she was like the main plot point.

I couldn't believe how bad Splinter looked. Just awful.

Yeah i don't see it knocking GotG off.

To be fair, my wife and I were literally the only two people in the IMAX showing of The Lego Movie on preview night, and that film printed money.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles nabbed a healthy $4.6M in late night Thursday’s on 2,651 locations. In comparison, Guardians of the Galaxy grossed $11.2M last weekend and has been logging a stellar mid-week gross. Last night, it took in approximately $7.6M. However, Paramount noted this AM that its TMNT bested the biggest family hit of the summer Disney’s Maleficent, which took in $4M with its Thursday shows and that it now expects a mid-to-high $40M three-day gross. Warner Bros. Into The Storm grabbed $800K in late nights that began at 8 p.m. TMNT started at 7 PM.

I'm hopeful dreadful word of mouth might destroy this movie's chances at success.

Considering the audience reviews aggregate at 66% with a 3 and a half star average, I wouldn't hold your breath on the terrible word of mouth. People don't seem to appreciate professional reviewers' opinions when it comes to Bay, or big budget sci-fi action superhero stuff in general (or terrible comedies for that matter). It seems more people are weakly positive about this than they are strongly negative. It takes a whole swath of strongly negative word of mouth for it to bring down a movie, a small amount of it will probably increase sales.

I expected people to hate this movie but certainly not on this scale. It's by no means good, but I still had a fun time. I feel like the movie knew it was dumb as rocks and as such never took itself too seriously, which is why I personally let it slide. I'm not sure how many more I could handle like this (because they'll only get worse, right?) but this was fun for what it is. I hope a bunch of kids love this thing as much as I loved the originals as a kid.

It would have been nice if this movie was more than just a great ride for kids, but I don't think Nick really cares to aim for the same standard as Marvel usually hopes to hit. They've done great work with the franchise as a whole so far though.

Normally, movies start at with a high tomato and then dips down. This movie was already shat on straight from the get-go. I'd be sad if this movie took first place though I wouldn't be surprised.

It sounds like the biggest problem people have, perhaps even more than the origin, is Megan Fox. Had the movie been all about the Turtles and less about April/Megan, I think it would have been received better.

Sadly, it probably was a case of "Cost", since the Turtles are CG and no doubt expensive. Perhaps that's why the film was kind of short as is.

the turtles were definitely the stand out and i wish they had more screen time. i didnt have a problem with megan fox though...my opinion of the april oneil bits wouldn't have changed if it was a different actress.

I'm thinking word of mouth will kill this film going into the actual weekend. Today's gross will be decent but I predict a massive drop off on Saturday.

I'm gonna guess:

Guardians of the Galaxy Fri-Sun: 51 mil
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fri-Sun: 43 mil.

GOTG - $44m
TMNT - $39m

So far, Me & the Inmate are the only ones to have actually made a prediction in this box-office thread :)

He's got GOTG beating TMNT by 5 mil, I have GOTG winning by 8 mil.

I'm also probably aiming a LEEETLE high. But then again, WOM on Guardians is really fucking good. Good enough for a weekend to weekend drop in the 40-45% range? I dunno.

I'm probably also aiming a little high for TMNT, considering word of mouth from people who have seen it isn't the greatest.

A few more thoughts...

It wasn't any worse than the Transformers movies and it made me laugh a lot more than any of those films. I feel like you get a little more leeway with dumb being ok when your story is about ninja turtles and the movie seemed aware of that? For example the "black" robots in Transformers 2 were dumb as hell and made me smh. But Mikey saying dumb/creepy things would make me laugh.

Comparing it to Transformers probably isn't saying much though. I think if you liked the OG films you will like this one. Then again...some in this thread seem to be old school TMNT cartoon/film fans and seem to have hated this movie.

In regards to Mikey. All I got to say is...the thirst is real lol

I'll take a shot at it

50+mil Guardians
27 mil TMNT

possibly cause word of mouth on both

Fucking liebesman. First Bay human take over transformers, and now this TMNT. Fuck this shit. Thanks for saving me time and money. I wanted to watch the movie because i am loving the animated show, and i love the unique characters of the Turtles, the villains and the plot. Now i know better.

I have GOTG at $42.3 million (a semi-decent 55% drop for a movie of this sort)
I'll pin the turtles at $34 million. This thing is going to tank.

It is those nostalgia glasses, I'm tellingi you. I was a huge fan growing up and I love the new Nick cartoon...this was good fun. It is a Turtles movie for Turtles fans, not haters.

Damn. 27 mil would be seen as awful.

In fact, if it opens sub 30 mil, there's a chance it'll be the sole "bomb" of the summer movie season.

I would've said kids were going to see this like a few days ago but now I don't know..they might just want to watch guardians instead.

maybe 30 some is a better estimate

It's disappointing because personality-wise the Turtles from the Nick show are there, even if it's very surface level. There's no real bonding or character development of any sort, but you can see the building blocks for something that could've been decent, and the action is solid. They pretty much dangled the carrot while they secretly lead us to Shit Mountain in the TV spots.

so im reading these TMNT reviews.

"If you thought Michael Bay had forgiven Megan Fox for saying he was "like Hitler," this new April O'Neil role is proof he hasn't."

wow...
