as a turtle movie/cartoon fan from the 90s who hasn't been a turtle fan for years it was fun and i did not feel like i wasted money nor do i regret losing sleep before work by going to midnight showing

I know GAF isn't representative of society at large, but I saw a ton of GOTG threads pop up last week when it opened.
This is the only Turtles thread I have noticed today, and I feel like I've been here a lot.
Cue multiple Turtles threads once I post, but whatever. My point is made.

Blue is the Warmest Color is great. But so is The Passion of Joan of Arc, Harakiri, Rashomon, and the Guardians of the Galaxy. You should go see it, it's a ton of fun.

I was thinking today: It's always going to be a matter of expectation, no? With Guardians, I expected Firefly meets Star Wars meets Avengers. I didn't get any of that. I enjoyed what I saw when I saw it, but in retrospect, I'm not really sure what it was that I had watched that has people rallying behind it. With the Turtles, all I'm expecting is Turtle humor and action sequences to give me and my son inspiration when playing with his figures (he loves recreating episodes and such). Basically, just an overly long filler/alternative episode of the show. The trailers show me that that's what I'm going to get. I have the series and potential sequels for my story needs. Is that fair? No, I guess not. But neither is the negativity at TMNT simply because it didn't meet manbaby expectations (for which I'm still struggling to figure out. Did you want it more gritty and Nolan or Frank Miller-esque or more goofy and shitty like the old series?). I'm willing to bet the end product is the result of all of the bemoaning from fans. Too bad. I would have liked to have seen the film inspired by the director's conversation with Eastman.
DID FUCKING NOTHING! What a waste of great designs and casting. All the prerelease hype had me salivating at the thought of excellent hero vs villain showdowns... IN SPACE! Nope. The entire movie was "I'm bad and hate this race, lemme get this object and destroy it because." "But my daddy won't let you get away with this.... let me help or something" *gets defeated anticlimactically* "I need this ship landed, keep me locked in here until we do." *gets defeated anticlimactically but humorously*. And if the movie was meant to be about friendship, it still fails because they bonded over a common "threat" for which was only spelled out for us in each characters' nicely packaged vulnerable moments. And that threat was never really portayed all that well for me to care.

LOL. This is a great post. People are being negative towards it because it's not a very good movie. Pretending like some how it's the fault of the fans that it turned out bad is hilariously insane.

The end product is the result of Hollywood execs putting all their weight behind Megan Fox. The movie is the complete opposite of fan service.

Not only does that "review" get the point wrong about Vanilla Ice (he wasn't a pivotal plot point. He was basically a glorified cameo) but ends it with "don't think" mantra of idiots everywhere.
My back of the napkin tally for Guardians puts it within a million or two of $175M as of this Sunday. It won't pass $200M until next Friday.
If the Turtles debut in the mid 40s, 105M domestic is probably about right.

I loved the turtles, even still have my stuffed Michelangelo, but thr old movies were kind of shit too. Maybe kids will find it enjoyable enough and get more toys like I did as a kid.
105M isn't a flop by any means, but definitely isn't a runaway success. Kind of in line with my expectations.
The live action movies have always been the worst part of the franchise, honestly.

Jett, were you not the one thag pointed out that Raph was not in disguise in the final film? Something changed. Sure maybe is was always going to be crap. But things changed somewhere and yes, I'd still bet it was a result of fan feedback. My point still stands: A lot of grown men who cling to their childhood cartoons got upset over the initial announcement/reveal/set pics etc. Maybe is was going to be gritty and Nolan-esque in Bay-guise and worthy of all of the salt but I still would have liked to see it and judge a complete product myself.
It's up there with 'It's a popcorn movie' excuse. Most reviews seem to highlight the mountain action sequence/the turtles are great. Everything else is 'meh/awful'.
If anything Raph in disguise would be fan service reference to the first movie. I definitely think some things were changed due to negative feedback, paramount being the inclusion of an actual Shredder character. Deep down I do believe Fichtner was supposed to be Robo Shredder originally. But April O'Neil being so ingrained into every aspect of the plot is something that just can't be added in the editing room. That's just the way the movie has always been.

Theh even explicitly say as much in the Ultimate Visual History book. So in a sense, we have a very watered-down film that doesn't really need to exist. I'm hopeful a sequel comes and goes crazy with Dimension X/soace stuff while retaining the long and wide-framed action shots.

Weird, my local theatre has only 2 theaters showing it with a handful of showtimes for me to choose from while GotG has 3 or 4 with plenty of showtimes. Turtles "winning" would be quite the feat.

just saw it. enjoyed it. i can't wait for the sequel.
on a little side note, i thought it would have been cool for the turtles to lose all the little flair they had on as the movie progressed, as if they didn't know all that shit would just get in the way once they reached the surface and began fighting actual battles. then, by the end of the flick, they'd be dressed pretty much like they always do.
also, i think it made perfect sense that the turtles are so huge in this universe. made sense in that they are, and will be in the future, facing guys armed with bullet-filled weapons.
