1/3 of our life sleeping

I love sleeping. I have absolutely amazing dreams. Also, the older I get the better I am at both manipulating those dreams and continuing them when I wake up.

Sleep is important thou, it heals your body and mind.

Did you know your more likely to have psychological breakdown if you don't sleep.

Also try to learn to lucid dream...not a waste of time when you can fly!

Except I forget them. The memory of my dream(s) never lasts. And even when I've just woken up, it can be foggy. Great experiences to be had in dreams, but they don't last like the experiences you have when you're awake.

I'm sure that would make a difference, but I can clearly recall most of my dreams. I am a lucid dreamer though, so I think the involvement is what makes them so much more enjoyable and memorable.

I love having slept, but I hate sleeping.

If all the benefits of sleeping can be compacted down to 1 hour I'd be all for it.

You were right...

Damn, what a handsome bastard I am.

I'd only like it if I was the only one who never had to sleep. If it was common, people would expect you to use a lot of that time working.

If ever a day comes when I can take a medication or have my body altered in a way that I'd only require minimal, if any, sleep, I would without hesitation continue.

That's why I finally got sense and bought an EXTREMELY comfortable bed. If you're going to spend a 3rd of your life doing something, you might as well make it fantastic.

Seriously, I'll never understand why people don't invest more in this. It's more important than a big screen tv!

feels good.

You experience them, therefore they are true.

I just wish there was a way to make them feel more solid and not like one min your on a beach talking to a pretty lady, the next minute the pretty lady is a shark in a bikini and for some reason you don't think it's strange until you wake up.

You'd probably die a lot sooner without proper amount of sleep. I'm willing to bet your life would be much more fulfilling if filled with sleep.

And consider this, dreams actually are much shorter than they feel, so you could live in your dream self for what feels like longer than your awake self.

I can't find the article at the moment, but supposedly Modafinil or some modified version of it allows people to have normal, healthy lives only needing ~2 hours of sleep. Just heard about that effect of it within the past month of my news feed, so sadly don't remember the news source. As soon as I read that I almost jumped into researching it more, but it's kind of scary. I do really hate having to sleep so much, especially since I have a LOT of issues sleeping (not being able to fall asleep, not getting restful sleep, etc.)

Cutting it down to 2 (or 3 or 4) hours would make my life a hell of a lot more normal, ironically. Wouldn't have to avoid jobs or classes that start before a certain time, stuff like that.

Edit: While I'm on the topic, here's an interesting article about how 8-hour-straight sleep is probably unnatural (should be 4 hours, 1-2 awake, 4 hours again apparently.)

I guess it's time to figure out how to fully enjoy the resting benefits of sleep while also fully enjoying the possibilities of consciously experiencing dreams.

It's been long since I slept 8 hours. Several years in fact. Usually sleep 6 and have since I was a child. I would hardly describe myself as more productive.

If you live to 90 you will have spent on avg 30 years of your life asleep. 80- 26.5 years. 70- 23 years. Think about that for a minute, just put the mouse down for 30 secs and really try to imagine it. Thirty years just completely wasted and gone doing nothing whatsoever. I enjoy reading science articles, like about new discoveries and future medicine and I remember reading one a while ago about them finding a gene that turns off your need for sleep or lessens it greatly. You'd take the pill/shot and you just wouldn't get sleepy anymore . Imagine all the thing we could do with 30% more time it's unbelievable.

That's basically not a very good idea.

As I think I've posted before, I have a strange reaction to a particular over-the-counter painkiller drug that completely deprives me of the need or desire for sleep.

It is by no means as pleasant as it sounds.

Sure, for three days I got a lot done. Plenty of reading, plenty of ironing and the house has never been so tidy before or since. But eventually - quite quickly - you run out of things to do. And in my case the hallucinations kicked in about day 4.

Plus, the rest of the family were pretty pissed off with me doing stuff all night every night.

I've always been curious about sleep studies, just general things like how many hours we need and how a bad or good nights sleep can effect your mental state, skin, eyes and all that kinda stuff.

Would be nice if we could turn this thread in to a sleep OT!

Awake: 16 hours = 66% of total life time, 100% of actual usable time
Asleep: 8 hours = 33% of total life time, 0% of actual usable time

Gain 8 hours of actual usable time per day = 24 hours = 100% of total life time, 150% of your current usable time.

Therefore yes, you would gain 50% more usable time.

I've been living off about 5 hours a night for almost a century, it's not great - feel pretty lethargic but my mental state is fine, my main concern with lack of sleep is not giving the brain enough time to organize itself but doesn't seem to manifest into any major problems yet. I read a few studies about lack of sleep - they say the body actually changes it's own chemistry to adapt if you are in an environment whereby you can't get a good 8 hours.

(I go to bed about 1am and wake up about 6:50, not sure how much if that is actual deep sleep)

That's not really true, since sleep is crucial to keep our bodies and minds going.

But... I get your point. It would certainly be nice to have more hours in the day, that's for sure.

You don't understand why we need to sleep. Have fun trying to stay awake for 3 days or even a week..

A similar dumb question would be why we are walking most of the time when we just could run the whole time to safe time..

Nothing but trouble If I didn't sleep and was out until 5 am everyday. How are you supposed to be productive at the wee hours of the night.
