So be clear, I loved the ending sequence - I really wanted there to be something going on out there, but wanted to be surprised, and it hit both notes perfectly. I just found that moment very familiar. It happened and even during the film I immediately thought of WotW. Still fun as hell.

My daughter and I also sat through the credits just trying to unwind the tension. And I really had to pee, too.

I'm a little confused about the wine bottle. Was that hers, from the beginning? How did it get there? Was that her car?

Yeah, it was her bottle. I remember a moment when John Goodman gave her her belongings in a box but said he didn't have time to go back for the wine bottle and some other things before he had to hurry inside the bunker and lock it up.

Also I don't think it was her car, since it was turned over on the side of the road in the accident, right?

I think the truck was Goodman's and the smaller car was that crazy woman's who tried coming into the bunker.

Yeah either way I loved it and it kinda summed up my reaction at the moment as well. The second she saw the UFO I was squinting to see what it was (at first I thought it was a helicopter) and I was like "WHAT".

Loved this movie. The final action scene was unnecessary, but it was so well done that it's hard to be bothered by it.

I was pretty skeptical of this movie because I wasn't a fan of Dan Trachtenberg's Portal short, but now I'm looking forward to whatever he does next.

I saw it in IMAX. A lot of the shots, especially early on, are super close up, tight frames on MEW. I'm sure that plays just as well on regular screen. Most of the movie is pretty low on the kind of fine detail that's easier to pick out on IMAX.

The sound in IMAX was super good tho.

Just saw the film. Made a good impression on me.

Really couldn't handle the atmosphere at times. Has an almost Alien vibe with how claustrophobic the whole thing felt - though this film definitely isn't an Alien tier film. The ending sequence with the space ship/dog-thing/Molotov cocktail could've been a little less convoluted. And while I liked the symbolism of Michelle choosing to go to Houston and fight I can't help but feel like that last scene was a little on-the-nose and rushed.

Still, would definitely give it a thumbs up. I hope they take their time and only add another "Cloverfield" installment when they have a movie deserving of the name, not just anytime they have something vaguely similar.

Yeah, I wouldn't think of this as being a made for IMAX movie. It wouldn't hurt it, of course, but it's not something to spend extra money to see in that format.

Then again, I'm someone who hasn't seen an IMAX movie outside of stuff at the Science Centre, and there are no options less than an hour away. I never even think about it.

Right but scotch right out the bottle barely burns ~at all~. Just for giggles I did an experiment and lit my ticket from this movie on fire and dropped it in a plate holding a thin layer of Johnnie Walker. The fire just quenched. I guess we can pretend that when the bottle breaks the scotch aerosolizes and it's more flammable like that or something. Lol.

Good catch. I didn't realize that. I thought the ship blew up the woman's car and caused the explosion. Then I was super confused when she left the truck and got in the car. Thanks for clearing that up.

Saw it. Really liked it. They did more at the end than i was expecting. But they did a better job with Goodman being a crazy fuck. Gees he was creepy. Im actually not sure, i think Howard was intentionally abducting her before he even knew the attack was happening. His truck seemed very calm at the gas station which doesnt back up his accident theory. Plus i think the guy that fought his way in was the one that told him the most about what was going on. Howard was already locking everyone up before he got in.

Yeah that's what i figured. He abducted her and then shit went down so the abduction became a "rescue".

I loved this film. It was super suspenseful and a roller coaster. I want another film with Michelle in Houston!!

Listened to an NPR interview with him recently about the movie. Some interesting stuff in there. He was only 24 when he did the music for Battlestar Glactica. I think this was supposed to be one of his first major movies. He said he worked for Elmer Bernstein (sp?) and he taught him that he had like 15 seconds to make an impression on people before they forgot about the music and became immersed in the movie, which is why you hear that weird instrument at the very start of the main theme.

Damn this movie was good but the tone for the last third could have gotten helped, like what happened to that alien dog When the ship picks her up? Also are the leader aliens in the ship or are they the ship? I felt they wanted to keep the aliens all mysterious but it didn't have as dark of tone as the rest of the film. They should of looked creepier and the alien ship with a mouth :/

Overall I love this film 8.5/10

What I got out of JJ interviews is that it's anthology but with a bigger picture in mind, connecting it all in a sense. Remember him saying he has an idea and hopefully he's able to do it .

Yeah. Interesting quote but at this point they are just splitting hairs. It really is okay if these films are just spiritual relatives. That is more interesting than trying to make a forced cinematic universe out of the whole thing with a "multi-timeline" universe. That kind of convoluted connective tissue goes completely against the simple approach of these films..

Just saw the film and really enjoyed it. It was very intense, and I was really creeped out by Howard. I didn't mind the ending with the alien fight, but I don't feel it was really needed. It felt somewhat out of place to me, but like I said, it didn't ruin anything for me. Great movie overall with great performances all around.

If memory serves that scene is not in the original script. The entire movie changed really, I actually didn't enjoy reading The Cellar script at all, I thought it was bad.

Wow, that was an intense experience. I liked how Howard was insane and kind of right at the same time. Michelle was a cool protagonist. It was nice to see a smart character in a movie whose defining characteristic wasn't being smart. John Goodman nailed his character. The subtle creepiness was perfect for such a small setting. Emmett was a bro, RIP . The ending was sort of out of nowhere but I really enjoyed the sequence and don't think it took anything away from the rest of the film. Loved it overall.

What about this film makes you think they were chasing ratings? Especially since it didn't even occur to you to think about the rating until after you'd watched it?

The ratings board is busted anway.

Also, Goodman wasn't just kind of right - he was pretty much right. That he was also a kidnapper and murderer doesn't change that he'd fairly obviously picked up on whatever it was Tagruato/Bold Futura was doing as he was working on satellites for the Navy.

He didn't get the particulars 100%, but he absolutely knew what was coming. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if learning what it was Tagruato was doing was what finally gave him the confidence to go out and indulge his psychotic whims regarding the kidnappings/murders. "Aliens are going to invade anyway. Might as well go for broke."

The most amazing part about the movie was how it got me to root for things to stay all right, even after all the warning signs. The montage where everyone was getting along was SO nice that I desperately clung to that after all the buildup in the first half.

I wanted Michelle to be happy given the circumstance.
I wanted Howard to just be a big soft weirdo.
I wanted them to gel and come out of it good and happy.

But of course the movie was less than an hour in, and I knew shit was going to go down.

Oh man.....I hope. That would be so cool. The ending of 10CL really made me want follow-ups/movies set in the same universe.

This movie deserves praise on its sound. I loved how it sounded when he shot the pistol in the small room and had my ears ringing like I was there. Also I swear throughout the movie I could hear subtle bass in the background during some silent parts like the aliens were doing shit on the surface.
