100 Smartest Cities in America (according to a study)

LOL @ Columbus, OH being a major college town like the rest of these...but not being on the list. Either the Ohio State students aren't as smart, or the rest of Columbus is extremely stupid.

Atlanta, GA is not on the list with both Georgia Tech and Georgia State University. One would consider Atlanta a major college town with those two schools. However, Atlanta metro's population of 5,457,831 far outweighs the 50,000 or so students who go to both of those schools.

Wow... expected Atlanta to at least be in the top 100... Also really surprised with how CA is largely unrepresented in this list as well.

Uh, have you ever seen Atlanta outside of Midtown? It's exclusion from this list doesn't shock me at all. The city of Atlanta has poor schools, lots of poor communities, not exactly the greatest conditions for academic excellence.

I'll bet they aren't counting the Metro area. Just the city of Atlanta proper, which is surprisingly small.

College Station, Auburn, and a lot of other small towns in redneck nowheresville make the list because they are small towns, and the college population makes up a significant chunk of the overall population.

Columbus is massive compared to most of these cities. It's not a "college town" in the strictest sense of the term, though Ohio State obviously has a huge impact on its economy and culture.

1. Ithaca, NY
2. State College, PA
3. Lafayette-West Lafayette, IN
4. Iowa City, IA
5. Ames, IA
6. Ann Arbor, MI
7. Bloomington, IN
8. Madison, WI
9. Lawrence, KS

10. Pullman, WA
11. College Station-Bryan, TX
12. Appleton, WI
13. Champaign-Urbana, IL

Midwest stomping bitches. Nine of the top 13.

I've been to Ithaca and without going into details... I believe it. If it make's anyone feel better the people I met while nice were relatively dull outside of discussing their majors/academic interest. Their knowledge was mostly topic related.

Also for a small city in upstate. NY (that tends to be conservative) the authorities followed a liberal application of the law in relation to vice (drugs, sex, etc).

Also Mansion parties.... Lots of mansion parties.... That were dull lol

I wonder how engineers fare w/ these kinds of rankings.

Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville, FL is an area of roughly 500k people, with the remnants of NASA and companies like SpaceX, Northup-Grumman, Rockwell-Collins, Lockheed, DRS, Harris, General Electric, and all of the little contract houses that support them.

The second largest industry is health care, so we're packed with doctors and nurses as well.

Not to mention the Air Force base here responsible for military space launches.

I'd expect us to rank much, much higher than we did, and not have places like Flint, MI as our neighbors. I'm going to go ahead and chalk it up to us not having the time to play on Lumosity!

People and organizations that donated the most to "study" smartness with Lumosity scores are clearly the dumbest.

My city is in the middle. I can tell you it may be true for intelligence, but not for being cultured.

Edit: Just paid more attention to the evaluation method...

who had played several Lumosity brain-training games
LMAO

Lumosity brain games? Really?

That is where they gathered this information?

This has to be the dumbest study I've seen in a while.

I Really have no idea how torrington CT is on this list. ITs probably the biggest shit hole town ever with a shitty school system.

ANd harrisonburg VA has to be on there becuase of james madison.

Wow. Every city I've lived in in the last decade is represented. Go midwest and it's quality public education/

And good thing Cedar Rapids has a bunch of engineers to up their score. Without them, that city is shit.

As someone from Omaha, I'm straight up offended that Omaha's average is being brought down because someone decided to tack Council Bluffs, Iowa onto us.

Also, not sure I agree with the fact that the town of my alma mater, Lincoln, is significantly smarter than Omaha.

Are they all college towns? College students shouldn't count, they aren't real residents. I've been to many of these and live in and and can safely say that they aren't anywhere near the smartest places anywhere.
