1080p mode in HD remasters on PS3

Most PS3 games do this. But forced 1080p generally looks worse than 720p on the PS3.

I understand now. If only 1080 is selected it will force all games to that resolution except a few that will default to 480.
if you have all resolutions selected it won't force any game that isn't 1080p to that resolution, and there's one example R&C that defaults to 720 even though it is native 1080.

Why wouldn't you have both 720p and 1080p selected? There are people with CRT 1080i TV's still?

I do, but I use it for my classic sub-HD systems. I have my PS3 hooked up to my computer monitor. And it is a pain in the ass to have to select the resolution for every game. As stated above, if you only have 1080 selected, and the game doesn't go that high, the system will default to 480.

wait.. everyone has theirs set to 1080p? i set mine to 720p. always.
most games are that, going higher just stretches.

besides, some games have slowdown at the higher res.
Yes, most games are that, and most games switch to 720p mode, so you lose absolutely nothing by leaving both 720p and 1080p checked in the XMB menu. The main advantage of leaving 1080p checked is that whatever games can render in 1080p (let's say SuperStardust), will then run in 1080p, XMB looks much better, and you also get video playback in 1080p.

except some games run at the higher res and you lose performance. like i said.. see FINAL FANTASY 13-2. the frame rate is so much more awful in 1080p. so i dont have 1080 selected anymore. it's happened with a few games.

so yeah i do lose something. performance.

I didn't know Ratchet HD did 1080p.=O

I think the general consensus is is that it doesn't. Though, Digital Foundry never did a technical analysis so it's hard to be certain.

You guys really shouldn't be forcing any resolution. 9 times out of 10 you will just be stretching the image, making it more blurrier as that's the result of PS3's poor upscaler. You should set it to automatic so the game will run in its native resolution.

Took some pictures of the first area of RC2 in both 720p and 1080p mode. The windows have the exact same "staircase" aliasing pattern in either resolution (11 "steps" in this case), which would indicate that both are running at the same resolution.

Yeah, I read about Ratchet running in 1080p, tried it out and the results just weren't there. I never understood why people said, that it would be running in actual 1080p.

EDIT: Wait, Sony advertised that? Filthy liars.

Most games dont bother to upscale. Really, from the back of my head the games that upscale 1080p are:
Final Fantasy XIII/XIII-2(LR?)
Ar Tonelico Qoga

The rest automatically defaults to 720p, as reported by my monitor. You should turn off 1080i however

Yes, I should have said that. It was somewhat the same deal with SOTC, where framerate was slightly worse in 1080p mode. I do think the exceptions are very rare, that it makes much more sense disabling 1080p for just those exceptions, rather than keeping it disabled all the time, and enabling it for still much more numerous games that support 1080p natively with no performance loss (PSN games mostly of course).
