13in MacBook Pro is just too small

Whenever I want to sit on the couch and put this thing in my lap, I can feel myself getting carpel tunnel syndrome while typing. Is this thing made for people with no arms?
Is there anything I can do? I can still return it but the 15" is too much.

I don't think the 15 inch is too much of anything. It's still a really modest size if you ask me.

Time to start stretching your fingers before typing, you weakling. Also I don't think the 15" keyboard is any larger.

I type on an iPad on my lap with no problems. 13" seems fine for most people. If you can't afford a 15" you could grab a bluetooth keyboard maybe? Or just return it and get a cheaper Windows laptop.

You know what isn't fun? Trying to use a 17" or 18" on your lap.

I think the 13" is the perfect size.

Although whenever I put my laptop in my lap usually I'll get a cat that decides she wants to be in my lap and she proceeds to sit on the keyboard. But that's a whole other issue...

13 inch is the perfect size for me. Using one right now. I do the majority of my work on it because it's just so comfy to use.

I have a 15" MacBook Pro and an 11" MacBook Air and I prefer the larger model for doing actual work. Using a desktop with separate monitor/keyboard/mouse is even better. How portable do you need it to be?

Different strokes. I wrote two novels on a 12 inch PowerBook, three novels on an 11 inch Air, and I've just now got a 12 inch MacBook (heir apparent to the PowerBook throne). I couldn't go any larger - I like em teeny and toasty.

Personally I tend to go for 11" or 13" laptops since I have a nice big all in one at home. Don't want to carry around a huge laptop to school. I'm already carrying around a whole bunch of other shit. I mean if I were to use it as my primary computer I'd find it super cramped for long term usage, but I have a tablet and a desktop to use when I'm at home.

Saw some girl with a 17" laptop in a class taking notes. Literally was impossible to type on since it was twice as wide as our university's note taking tables. She had to prop her legs up to hold up the laptop so she could type properly. Felt bad for her having to lug it around and not able to take notes comfortably.

Are you guys using some kind of desk thing? Like there isn't enough room to rest my wrists below the keyboard. My old HP was bulky as well and there was tons of room for my big hands

Perfect amount of space for me, but I have smaller hands.
I mean, this is definitely why they make different sizes. They're not one-size-fits-all by any means.

13" is perfect fo rme.

You aren't supposed to wrest your palms below the keyboard AFAIK?

My 2012 13" MBP had had a series of ongoing issues and had to be brought in to the Genius bar multiple times throughout the years.

A few weeks ago, I took it in and as a gesture of good faith, they just offered me a brand new MBP for free, so naturally I said yes.

I pretty much only got the 15" because of the significantly better hardware for not that much more money. That said, not sure what to tell you about the keyboard. If you need more room to rest your hands maybe give the 15" a try. It's not that big of a laptop, ultimately...quite the opposite.

I have a 13'' rMBP a few years back and while I absolutely love it, I'm definitely going to go 15'' rMBP when I decide to upgrade.

I have a 13 inch MBA and I think it's the perfect size. I have no trouble with it cramping my hands. Small enough to throw in my bag and go without being too big or bulky.

I don't think the 15 inch is too much of anything...

It is too much money for a laptop of that caliber. $2000-2500? That is insanely expensive. I do know that Apple's laptops retain their value due to 'reasons' and they generally provide a great user experience (I've used them intermittently while going to school when you could check them out for 3 days at a time), but for some people (myself included), I couldn't afford that much even if I wanted it.

I have no trouble with the 13" MacBook Air whatsoever, although I would certainly enjoy a higher resolution. But the keyboard or general size never occur to me as being an issue at all.

13" is the perfect size; my personal mbp is 13", and sometimes at work I use a 15". The work machine is crazy big an heavy and uncomfortable, 13" is basically perfect.

The 15" keyboard is just the same size, the extra size is used by speakers at the sides, which is a lot of waste. The only upside of the 15" is the i7 cpu, which at work is p useful for virtualization and stuff.

15 inch is nice for the screen real estate, but I think my next computer will be 13 inches because I want something a bit more portable.

15 inch rMBP is perfect size. Not really for tossing in my lap on a train or plane but it's light enough to lug it from place to place and toss it on a surface or my lap in a chair/couch.

13-14 is a good small laptop. Enough space to do work, small enough to not be annoying to carry. I really hate this 11-12" bullshit though, if I need something that small, I'll just use a tablet because I'm not getting anything done anyways.

I thought it would be too small when I first got one back in 2009. I was so wrong, 13" is the best size for carrying around at school and I've never found myself wanting a bigger screen (although the resolution back then wasn't good, now I set my Retina 13" at 1440x900 scaled and it's much better)

The 11" Air is my favorite computer of all time. It's just perfect for sitting in a comfy chair and programming. And I love the keyboard.

I only wish it had the processor and retina screen of the MBPr. I just upgraded to the new 13" Pro, and I love it. But I have a feeling I'll still wind up using my old Air a bunch.

When I was debating making the jump to a MBP I went back and forth between the 13 and 15-inch models a couple of times. In the end I decided on the 15" because the max effective scaling on the 13" (1680x1050) is just too low for comfort for my kind of workflow and I was going to use it mostly as a desktop replacement anyways.

That's what I keep telling people, OP. But some people love it so damn much.

Personally I can't go smaller than the 15in model.

Let them have it! As long as Apple keeps making the larger ones, I'm fine. They've already discontinued the 17 inch models... but I think 15 inch should be safe.
