1666 Amsterdam - Gameplay footage

The zooming into the Vermeer paintings was absolutely stunning. I'd pay just to play around with the first minute of that demo.

Bribing journalists, deceitful gameplay promos, gimping PC games, and apparently illegally trying to steal Patrice's IP after firing him a couple times are the first things that come to mind. They've also got a track record for releasing broken games.
Need actual sources on all of these. How could they illegally steal an IP that they owned the rights to from a studio that they owned?

Ubisoft bought THQ Montreal, didn't they? Patrice became a Ubisoft employee right after the acquisition. They tried working towards 1666 but a month or so later they went separate ways in bad terms. Yes, Ubisoft is scummy for trying to steal Patrice's IP, but 1666 was in IP hell from day one. A game of such scale requires a big studio like Ubisoft making it. Patrice will probably sit on it for a while, while he manages his indie studio.

As per the article, "Ubisoft scooped up the 1666 rights at THQ's bankruptcy auction, paying $2.5 million for not only 1666, but also the THQ Montreal studio and a new game codenamed Underdog."

I bet Patrice was happy as heck when Syndicate underperformed and The Division became one of the most sold new IP's. It pretty much meant that AC was no longer the main focus for Ubisoft and they didn't have to worry too much for competition with another historic adventure game.

I hope that both Ancestors and 1666 are successful, but man they look rough. Early in development, I know.

Good call, it might be better to back that statement up.

I'm interested in knowing more about this also, especially whether or not it was legal for them to own the IP in the first place. Hope we can see some more news about the lawsuit.

I wasn't expecting it look that good -- hopefully he gets back to development following Ancestors: the Human Kind Odyssey.

Otherwise, why even fight for the property rights?

Wow. Seems like Ubisoft held onto the IP then lifted a lot of it's ideas. Then once they had their other games in production...okay...here is your IP back.

1. It was a preview event, they mentioned it wasn't part of their policy, (whoever organized the event was likely fired for doing so), and it didn't affect reviews since the people attending the event weren't the same people who reviewed the game.

2. That demo isn't deceitful considering that neary every gameplay idea showcased for the game made it in. Visuals having to be downgraded due to cross gen development is just a reality of games development unless you wanted the last gen version to have a completely different scale. And that's not even counting the fact they were basically playing a guessing game for what the specs for the new hardware would be. Meanwhile, they released a game that year that completely outclassed that original WD demo in scale and visuals, (ACU), which ran way worse as a result.

3. A bunch of unfinished effects hidden in files not making it into the final game doesn't=gimping the pc release. This was info known two years ago yet people still believe they were intentionally "holding back the pc version." Holy shit.

And yes it was legal for them to purchase the IP and the studio unless I'm missing something, according to THQ a large amount of the project's budget went towards crafting that five minute video, Ubi had a mandate to have the game in a playable state, which while it technically is here, is definitely a mix between super early prototype and target render.

Syndicate suppsoedly surpassed Unity in sales, yes it wasn't the best selling AC game but it's still one of Ubi's "bigs".

Great prototype. Could have been pretty awesome. Although I feel like it would have used the AC engine, and would have been too similar and in direct competition with AC itself.

Wait. Are they not ?
No, Vermeer and Rembrandt were born in Delft and Leiden, both in the (northern) Netherlands. If you can't tell Flemish and Dutch masters apart in style, which I can't blame you, the former mostly painted religious imagery, whereas the latter painted more secular, everyday life imagery.

I see.
Well, this is embarassing. Just, don't tell my wife or mom (both art history teachers)

hey y'all - to answer some of your questions, since I heard about this thread at the conference:

1) yes, it was allowed for anyone to take photos/video
2) patrice said before the showed it "I always hoped this stuff would get out there somehow, like as a phone video or something." So I thought to myself - alright patrice! your wish is my command!
3) I wish I'd zoomed in a bit, and also that my phone wasn't kind of shit at video!? what's with the stupid sound all up in the right speaker! bleh! The oneplus is not the best phone for these things.
4) a bunch of the news stories referred to me as "journalist brandon sheffield" or worse, "youtube user brandon sheffield," so I guess I've not made my mark on the world yet. Destructoid got it right though! (thanks, destructoid)
5) I wrote up a bunch of stuff for zam.com about this but it's not been published yet.

HONK

Oh and re: the rights thing - so far as I understand, Ubi bought everything from THQ montreal, but I think the rights to the game were originally part or fully owned by patrice (note that it says "Patrice & Co." in the opening credits of the video). The THQ contract was probably considered void by Ubi, so they should own it - but patrice fought it and got the original contract upheld. Or similar!

A lot of that is hearsay, but I think it's something along these lines.
