1up Manhunt 2 Wii review

Raging Spaniard said:
So? Should they give Bioshock a 9 because there are too many shooters on the console?
No, Bioshock was first of the 3, so it gets the 10. :D

Come on now, genre doesn't matter, quality does.
And holy fuck man, chill out, youre arguing over amazingly unimportant stuff

I'm just pointing out a seeming platform/genre bias they seem to have . . . but all three of those games are really great (Bioshock, Halo, & Orange Box) . . . but then again, I do have a bias to that genre. :D

And it is important . . . those ridiculously low scores can really pull down gamerankings.com averages, so they should really try to be a bit more reasonable . . . it is just spite to be giving big budget good quality titles scores less than 5.0.

They have wildly erratic opinions. Yes, there are some bad games out . . . low budget shovelware, games that got shipped despite not being ready, buggy games, etc. But 1Up has been giving very low scores to decent game that just don't suit their preference. I think card games are stupid, so would it be fair for me to review eye of Judgement and give it a 1.0?

Here are some decent games that they gave unnecessarily low scores to:
Looney Toons: Acme Arsenal PS2 1UP 1.0 10/26/2007 (1.0? Really? Not 3.0? or 4.0?)
Tony Hawk's Proving Ground Xbox 360 1UP 5.5 (5.5? The first line of the review is "Tony Hawk is fun.". . . shouldn't that at least merit a 6.5?)
NHL 2K8 Xbox 360 1UP 4.0 09/11/2007 (4.0? So you don't like the control scheme so thrash the game despite tons of merit like a great franchise mode.)

And for comparison, they gave Lair a 6.0:
Lair PS3 1UP 6.0 08/27/2007 (What? Your review rips it apart but you think it is better than all of the above games?)

Their reviews are internally inconsistent . . . then need a little editing to filter out the extremes. And they are extreme in the other direction too . . . they've given out three 10s recently . . . all to xbox 360 shooters.

I don't think that being what you call wildly erratic is such a bad thing. As you've pointed out we've got review aggregators to even out the scores. Extremely high/low reviews serve a purpose -- that is to point out, frequently angrily or joyously what really works or really sucks about a game. I prefer reading gushes and hack jobs over perfectly even-handed, meticulously thorough reviews.

Not every review can be a rant or a rave, but there's certainly room for them.

I won't argue with much of Sharkey's review, but just a couple things.

You can skip some of the cutscenes. I'd have to go back thru again to see if it's just the ones at the start of a level or what, but I know by pressing C I was able to skip some.

Two, the visuals being worse than the original Manhunt seems a bit of a stretch. The character models reminded me a lot of the stuff used in Bully, while the original Manhunt seemed more in line with the earlier PS2 GTA stuff. I didn't find the locations to be generic either. Granted, certain areas don't really surprise you much, like the opening and the S&M Bar, but I thought quite a few of the later levels were pretty well done.

Gah! The C button!

Uh I have not played Manhunt 2 and have but a mild interest in it, but from what I've seen it looks better than:

If its the Wii version...then purchase the PS2 version :D

well I expected the story to be somehow dull. Its the gore factor and pervert level design which should do the trick.

They both scored the same.

I was mildly interested, but I think I'll just give this game a pass now. Plenty to play this holiday anyways.

shouldn't someone make an official thread for this game? I would but I don't know really what to do. At any rate I'm interested in getting it for my brother and would like to have a thread about it where its not just getting panned.

So weird how controversy translated into hype in some people's minds.

Some of you guys are acting like this game ever had a chance.

Ok... well I figured I would try the game out for myself. Surprisngly this game isn't bad, the only thing bad thus far is the camera... evrything else is rather simple, sneak kill sneak kill. I just finished the first chapter and the VA is top notch and the graphics are actually good "in game". Here is the thing, the cut scenes seem to be using the PS2 graphics or something because the actuall ingame stuff looks sharp and clean, other than the actuall model design, its typical GTA style or w/e. There are alot of lighting effects though, again I would like to stress tha for some reason the cutscenes look bad but the actuall game looks alot better.

At first I was going to just go ahead and agree wiht Sharkey because I trust his reviews, but after playing I really like the wii controls other than the camera. All of the motions work perfectly and you can definitly tell whats going on in the kills. I really don't see as to why this game got a 4, but to each his own I guess. Maybe I just haven't gotten in far enough to start hating it yet...

People actually thought that this would be a good, no, a decent game?
it is a decent game... so far at least, it doesn't do anything special other than VA and atmosphere, but it does those two extremly well. I need to read the whole review to see what the issue was.

The bit where you have to hold the controller perfectly still is pretty cool. One time I thought I was just gonna chill in the shadows and wait for the guy to go away, then the mini-game started, I absent mindedly jerked the Wii remote towards the screen to start playing and got busted.

I played it for an hour. First impressions: I love the atmosphere and the Wii controls. Melee combat doesn't feel as good as in the Godfather but good nonetheless, enough so that I don't regret paying 10 dollars more for this version. Models are pretty low poly but the lightning and post effects give it a special something.

The first game was very love-it-or-hate-it but it scored in the 8s on average. Most people on GAF were let down when it released? Before my time. I personally don't recall disappointment being the predominant mood amongst players back then.

Judging by the reviews of Manhunt 2, it sounds like more of the same - no significant improvements over the first game in terms of graphics, control or gameplay mechanics. That's disappointing, but as a big fan of the original I doubt I'll actually feel disappointed when playing the game, censorship aside. It doesn't sound like a Devil May Cry 2 downgrade; just a 2003 style game releasing in 2007 amongst a new generation of console software. Those old control/AI issues that may have bugged some players the first time around will certainly start to feel painful to a good deal more people in a new game four years later, but I doubt they'll bug me in the slightest since I still enjoy playing Manhunt 1.

I haven't played the sequel, but the IGN review sounds about right coming from a fan of the first game, and the 1up review also sounds about right coming from a guy who disliked it.

I love this quote from IGN's review, referring to the original game:

When you have a character that walks around with a pig's head on and his genitals hanging out on top of the bloody or violent kills, you've got something that is literally ground breaking.

I don't even know where to start with all the things that are wrong with this sentence.

That sounds wonderful. In fact I think I found my Halloween costume.

The first thing I noticed was that "who" should be substituted for the first instance of "that."

My roommate said he wanted to get this today because of the controversy it was creating. I told him it was poorly reviewed, and he acted surprised that I considered that a factor in my purchase decisions. Nonetheless, we looked it up on gamerankings and it was scoring significantly better than I thought it was (around 70%?). That's still a kind of crappy aggregate score, but it's a lot better than I expected given 1up's review. Did 1up have any issues nobody else did?

If you're the kind of person who gets off on the idea of:

* grabbing some dude in a headlock and then sawing his head off

* jamming a live electrical wire in someone's mouth until it explodes

* nailing a guy to a chair and then stabbing him in the face with a hypodermic needle

* stuffing someone's head in the toilet then beating them to death with the cistern

* stabbing a policeman in the stomach until he dies

* jamming a crowbar under someone's groin then ripping his balls off with it

* decapitating a person with a shovel

* suffocating someone to death with a plastic bag

then you're probably not going to give a fuck about review scores.

It's 3rd party, mature content on Wii. Not good for the current GAF/1up/EGM/Sony/MS status quo.

Speculawyer's TTWO shilling is getting old, really old.

Shilling is if I say "Manhunt 2 is great! EVERYONE SHOULD BUY IT!"

Pointing out that 1Up gave it a 4.0 when IGN gave it 7.7, gamespot gave it a 7.0, and the gamerankings average is 70% (and that average includes the 40% from 1UP) . . . that's just calling a spade a spade.

Hey, how did you get a hold of Take Two's Quarterly Shareholder Report?

Are you freaking serious?

You want 1up to take the gamerankings average into account when they assign a review score based on their editor's opinion?

Unbelievable.

It's amazing the backlash that Bioshock, Halo 3, and Orange Box have created towards review sites simply by being on the same console.

If 1up thinks the game is genuinely terrible, it should get a terrible score. If 1up thinks the game is genuinely awesome, it should get an awesome score.

None of you will be bitching if/when Super Mario Galaxy scores 9.5's and 10's across the board.

I meant, um, actual specific issues with the gameplay. Not so much conspiracy theories.

Yeah, but he's not a Wii fan (if anything, he's a 360 fan), but he's got stock in Take Two. :P
